Age of Conan

AoC is steak and WoW is Hamburger

In an interview with the director of Age of Conan, Gaute Godager, he told Eurogamer that his game is like steak and wine, while World of Warcraft is like McDonald's.

Gaute reveals that he enjoys playing Lord of the Rings Online and World of Warcraft... However, then he said:

"I'm going to be a bit cheeky now, but if you've been to McDonald's for four or five years, and had your burger and your Coke, sometimes it's great to just have a great steak and a glass of good wine."

And continues with...

"I think that's what we're trying to do. It's more expensive, it's not for everyone and perhaps it's not as easily accessible as WOW is. But it could be more meaty."

While Age of Conan is doing very well and their launch was a huge success, there's unfinished content which was expected to be in with the release and there's many bugs which players keep complaining about -- how do you feel about the statement by AoC's Game Director? Is he right? Do you feel that playing AoC is like drinking red wine and entering Azeroth and Outlands in WoW is like drinking a Coke? Hmm.

I love how the writer spelled "wine" wrong.

I woud say that AoC sucks, i was 1 of the beta testers, and the only thing i found amusing about the fighting area, was that you coud do combos that you build from scrach, but that was the only thing, the rest of the game "sucked"

Wow is much better than AoC in my opinion, so if AoC is steak and wine, Wow is Lobster, tuna, organic vegetables and a great whisky =P

I say we string em' up! WoW couldn't be like steak Taurens would be offended. McDonald's burgers are made from Soy :p

AoC is like steak? LOL. Maybe a two dollar steak, sure. I rate games on gameplay and what keeps me interested.. AoC just does not have it.

AoC is a big bland piece of chewy beef. =P

I don't agree with this at all. I have played AoC and it is a great game but it is no WoW. WoW doesn't need the FEW things that AoC has that WoW may not but that is because it doesn't need it. I think they are both steak, but WoW doesn't need the A1 to make it good, it would actually ruin the taste but I see how the AoC steak would need to soake itself in all the sauce to make it appealing.

I think he's retarded AoC as a competition for wow is pathetic. Basically the creators of AoC should (and most likely are) be crying right now. Their basic attack system is R E T A R D E D.

Sooo AoC you can take your beefy analogy and throw it away. Even McDonald's is better then a steak that's all fat and gristle and purple cool aid passed off as whine.

If you were in his shoes, wouldn't you say the same?

Regardless, I agree with his statement.

Hehe, not sure how that slipped. I've fixed it, though. Been a long day.

If it's a steak it's undercooked, it came with the wrong sauce and the waiter corked the wine.

I will play AoC again in a few months when it's close to finished and the gamebreaking bugs/balance issues are resolved.

Only then will it deserve such an analogy.

Steak crawling with bugs. I'd rather eat a burger made of paper...

  • Thu, Jun 26 2008 11:24 PM ()

i think that is a bold statement since AoC has more bugs than an inner city crackhouse. also, even though both are in the same game category they are different. its like comparing steak with blackened redfish. both are great, but its just a matter of taste

AoC has yet to be a huge success. I think that if the subscription numbers come out in the next few days (today was the cutoff for the first free month) we're going to see just how "successful" Gaute's steak is to McDonalds hamburger.... last time I checked McDonalds sells a fuckload of hamburgers and makes bank.

What WoW (or AoC for that matter) player drinks wine anyway?

    AoC could be steak, sure.

    Broken, nigh unplayable steak.

    But steak nonetheless.
