Age of Conan

The Male vs Female attack-speed issue

Today one of the designers at Funcom went out with an official "announcement" regarding the hotly debated Male vs Female attack-speed issue.

Svein Erik "Sharum" Jenset starts out with telling us that Funcom believes it's an unacceptable bug, and that they never intended either gender to be stronger/weaker in any form of way. He continues by saying that they've been working hard on making the "necessary adjustments to correct the issue for quite some time already".

There's several reasons why its taking Funcom so long to rectify this problem and "Sharum" goes into detail as to why.

Let me begin with saying “yes, we here at Funcom agree with you; this is an unacceptable bug”. We never intended for any character to be stronger/weaker than another based on its gender, and we have been working on making the necessary adjustments to correct this issue for quite some time already.

Now, in our game, we have two primary sources of damage; ‘normal’ damage, commonly referred to as “white damage”, and ‘combo’ damage. Making the white damage equal for both Male and Female characters is, in this context, a fairly simple task and something we’ve already done and which should already have been patched out to Live.

For future reference, when I say that it was a fairly simple task to fix it, we’re still talking about modifying, either through actually having an animator work on the animation resource itself or by having a BCC designer adjust the speed-scaling of said animation resource, of more than 150 unique animations. In addition, these animations are fairly “simple”; by which I mean that they are your ordinary attacks and don’t contain any flourishes, sequential blows or other “complicated” stuff.

However, if we move onto ‘combo’ damage, which is what is causing the notable part of this issue, there are suddenly several factors that come into play when determining the final damage. I won’t be wasting too much time in this update to go into detail about every factor, but to quickly list a few they would be stat/modifier/multiplier (which in turn depends on class, level and weapon equipped), length of animation and, although irrelevant to this exact issue any longer, amount of steps in a combo sequence.

The main reason for the discrepancy in damage output that you’re seeing is that the length of an animation isn’t equal for both Male and Female characters in many cases. This is what we’re currently fixing, but there’s roughly 800 to 1000 animations in total that are involved here, and that they are significantly more “complex” than the ‘white damage’ animations mentioned above this naturally takes a lot more time.

Of course, once the length of the animations have been fully corrected/tweaked either by an animator or BCC designer then every rank (of every combo for every class) has to be re-balanced by the System Designers because, as I mentioned above, one of the factors that come into play when determining the combo damage is animation length.

I guess I should begin wrapping this up by now. I’m afraid I won’t be able to give you an exact date for when this issue will be fixed, but we’re working internally towards a goal of having everything finished during the next two to three work-weeks, depending on how much we need to re-adjust after the initial tweaking. This is including the majority of QA testing, which can be performed during the process as we’re working on a class-by-class basis. That being said, and even with on-going testing during this process, everything still needs to be verified by QA once more after we merge our changes into the system data to ensure that we’re not breaking anything else.

We will however not be patching this out to Live on a class-by-class basis, but rather in one big “collective” fix to all classes. I will make another promise right here and now though; I’ll be investigating whether or not we can introduce these changes to the public Test server (which Famine has promised everyone a bigger update on soon) at the earliest possible convenience.

I know that many of you will probably be disappointed to hear that it might take us as much as another three to four weeks to solve this issue, for which I can only apologize, but we want to make sure that we devote the amount of time that an issue of this magnitude and importance deserves rather than rush out a “quick fix” that might not work as well

And finally, I have to stress that even with our internal goal set and everything currently proceeding on schedule I cannot currently promise that this will be patched to Live at the projected date. There’s a lot of stuff that, while totally unrelated, might cause a certain patch to be delayed or even pushed out without containing this data. What I can promise though is to return with another update about a more specific patch date as soon as possible.

I hope that this information is what many of you have been asking for, and that I’ve been able to present you with answers to many of the questions you’ve had about this issue. On behalf of myself, everyone else directly involved on fixing this issue and Funcom as a company; thank you for reading!

What frustrates me most is that this is just another example of exactly why most of the active members in my guild and players on our server have cancelled their subscriptions to Funcom's Age of Conan.

The game has great potential and unique concepts. Conan also has some fantastic and innovative ideas compared to what we've seen in previous MMO's, but unfortunately the product delivered to the community was and is incomplete and unfinished.

I can understand the concept of trying to beat the competitors they're up against, but sometimes it is best to take your chances rather than prove too early that you're incapable of producing a quality product. This decision by Funcom will potentially damage them for a great deal of time to come, and will cost them the confidence they earned from previous releases they did well with.

In this market, timing and quality is everything. Even though the graphics are terrific, people will only be entranced with eye candy for a limited time. Eventually, ease of gameplay prevails overall--as does the way the company handles its player-based feedback.

Obviously when you review the box and notice that it claims support for Direct X 10, and you discover that it does not, you'll understand more clearly of how quickly Funcom pushed Age of Conan for release before its time. I'm sure they never intended to release it this early, and after experiencing the game as I have, it feels to me as if I am playing in a beta test that still has 8-12 months of polishing left for an actual release date.

Unfortunately, it appears that a new Mythic release this fall in the MMO genre will be taking up the services and subscriptions of our guild members.

I will give this game 2 out of 5 stars due to its currently broken condition.

Nstibnite, you are making up the "most of the active members in my guild and players on our server have cancelled their subscriptions to Funcom's Age of Conan". Shame on you. Always seems to be a low class jerk like you lying to make drama posts. Climb back under you rock.

Facts are just the opposite! Server populations keep going up and it is fun to play. WoW was released early too and has had many major troubles since (ie aq40, mag, naxx, pvp balance). Do not expect perfection or you will always be disappointed.

AoC as it is is 4 stars out of 5. It will improve.

Nstibnite you in your guild forums state you are doing AoC as only a temp filler until Warhammer starts. Poor way to get and keep an AoC guild member with them knowing you are leaving soon. You are on a RP/pvp server which is gank
city causing most to move to other servers which I do hope AoC addresses in future patches. My statement above stands. You expected perfection and a few weeks in cry because you did not get it..

Angelrock, that is just real classy of you to flat out call me a liar and claim I am a low class jerk. Speak for yourself, shall you?

I am not lying at all. I am the guild leader of my guild and we had better hopes for Age of Conan. Yet, our members played through and left in utter disgust. They all said the same thing--we'll just do something else until Warhammer releases.

In addition, our server population has dwindled to very little and only a few are still showing up active on my friends list. It seems every time I get acquainted with a new player, they are inactive in just a few days.

Perhaps your server is having better success, but ours on Hyperborea sure is not.

I will not climb under any rock, thank you. As for WoW, there's a major difference between some problems and a substantially incomplete and unstable product.

Everyone is welcome to list their evaluation or opinion openly of any game or product they wish. Calling someone crude names for doing so, just because you do not agree, simply shows you have no character or class.

You're welcome to disagree all you like, and point out flaws you think exist within the relevance of my post--but the instant you start flaming with insults to my persona, you instantly lose all of my respect and the materials you post become worthless for reviewing.

My hopes are you will stay with Age of Conan, and enjoy it for as long as you feel it's worth 4 stars.

What matters is that you are having fun with the game you're playing.

    Good luck.
