Teaser page Update #1: Day 2

It's happened exactly as we thought it would. The teaser page over at the multiple Blizzard owned websites has updated today (at around 12.10am) revealing not only more glowing white light, but also a new hint at what the game could be.

New blizzard game?Day 2 Ice 2

Firstly, the most obvious addition is the new teaser image. Yesterday, Blizzard post the ice1.jpg splash image. Today, they've updated the splash to ice2.jpg and it has revealed more light and another ruin in the ice. This time, the ruin has obvious connections to the Diablo franchise. Over at DiabloFans.com, things are heating up as more and more connections between the teaser images and the Diablo franchise become apparent: (src)

A new symbol appeared on the upper-right side of the ice fissure. This ice image might not mean anything yet except being just a teaser: that a new game announcement will be made.

At this point, it could be a Diablo game (most likely due to Diablo II Anniversary being the same date as WWI closure), Starcraft: Ghost or Warcraft IV. All these games have been hinted a lot by Rob Pardo, Paul Sams and Itzik Ben Bassat in the past year.

xusnlivin reports one of the runes shown in today's image resembles the Hel Rune from Diablo II.

The second addition to the whole affair is the update of the master.CSS file for today. Blizzard have added another CSS tag in the file that is commented out. It is called .cavern and it adds a whole new piece to the puzzle. Once again, DiabloFans are there to answer all... with speculation.

Yesterday the name was Tundra. Today the name is Cavern. His pattern points toward one of the Diablo Acts' locations: Glacial Trail -> Frozen Tundra (.tundra in CSS) Glacial Trail -> Drifter Cavern (.cavern in CSS)

The speculation was true: D (04.jpg - fourth letter of the alphabet) and today's image O (15.jpg - 15th letter of the alphabet). At this rate the image numbers will reveal DIABLO. Tomorrow's image might be named as any of these file names ... 01.jpg (standing for the first letter of the alphabet: A), 02.jpg (standing for B), 12 (standing for the twelve letter of the alphabet: L) or 09.jpg (standing for the ninth letter of the alphabet: I).

With the addition of today's .cavern image to yesterdays .tundra image, this is how the show looks so far:

Day 2 Cavern

So guys, has this changed your minds about it only being related to WotLK and are we going to be treated to Diablo 3 at the WWIs or is this just another Blizzard mind game? What are you thinking of all of this new speculation?

We will keep you updated over the coming days as things progress towards... well... towards whatever it is we are heading towards at the WWI!

Thanks for keeping us updated BTW. This is really cool and I noticed small pictures of things, but couldn't make them out. A third diablo? That'd be cool, but personally I would have prefered it be Blizzard telling us the release date of Wotlk. Just my opinion,

But seriously... Who's going to play that boring Diablo when there's WoW out there? ;>

Diablo is a single player, story driven RPG title with multi-player support, not an MMO. World of Warcraft is a progression driven MMO, not a story driven RPG. They are two completely different buckets.

I personally would drop World of Warcraft like a sack of waste if given the chance to return to the Diablo franchise. Thankfully, Diablo 3 will most likely be a one time payment for X hours of game play and battle.net affair so once I'm done with it, I can jump back into WoW ;D

04 and 15 could sound like a date to me. They could do 04 15 20 09. You know, april 15 2009 or something.

My money is on WotLK beta codes and/or playable to everyone there.

But I'm puzzled by the two symbols/runes visible in the picture that remembers me a lot of the runes in Diablo 2 - LoD.

I thought those symbols looked eerily familiar. My money's on Diablo 3. If it indeed turns out to be Diablo 3, then Blizzard will not only receive my Soul in a box, but I'll include some special cookies too....

my problem is, in the first spoiler that is a frostmourne rune. straight up. personally, i think it will be revealing a detail about WotLK that we dont know yet.

i would love to see diablo3 like the rest of you, but i just WILL NOT let myself get excited about something they may not announce.

I am more inclined to believe that it will be the official announcement of the WotLK Expansion release date. First is to consider the style of art used for the ice. I've been following the artists' work for a while, and this has more of a Warcraft feel to it. Another thing to consider, in regard to the runic images used, is that the Death Knight will be using "Runic Magic". The ice in itself would be an obvious reference to Northrend and the Frozen Throne. As far as the images' number labels, I would say clues to the release date. 04/15/09, I am guessing. The only thing that throws that off is that 04/15/09 is a Wednesday, and software, DVD's, etc are usually released on Tuesdays... A definate puzzle to be sure. Blizzard was always pretty good at things like this.

I remember from a year or more ago, I was reading some supposedly "leaked" info on a Diablo fan site. Someone was saying that D3 will revolve around the battle between Light and Darkness, than players can choose either side and also their weapons would become lighter or darker etc. Unfortunately this is all I can remember, but I clearly see light protruding the darkness in these pictures. This is all I have to link them to Diablo 3.

The explanations given in the article are amazing and big /salute to whoever took the time to decipher the hidden meanings of the filenames and tags!

Just like everyone else, I'm waiting for the complete picture :D Please be Diablo :))

Im still voting RotLC, but I keep hoping for something MUCH bigger... :-\

  • Tue, Jun 24 2008 10:05 AM ()

It's WotLK.. they're not going to steal the thunder of the cash cow's new expansion by announcing a new game at this point.. Especially when pre-orders for Wrath are up. The runes look similar because they are both Blizzard games, and probably employ many of the same artists. The ice is a big theme of WotLK, as are the runes for the new class and profession. People are reading way too far into it.

I'm sorry but I am willing to put money on it having nothing to do with WotLK for a number of reasons:

    (1) Blizzard are a lot of things but they aren't inconsistent. They have NEVER done a teaser for an expansion.
    (2) Falling in line with the last point, no teaser was done for The Burning Crusade launch date or beta announcement.
    (3) It completely defeats the purpose of a teaser if you are going to be obvious about it.
    (4) Announcing Diablo 3 now would not hamper the sales figures of WotLK due to the fact that the game will be released much later down the line, probably not before Q1 2010.
    (5) A Press Conference is being held right after the opening ceremony for the WWIs. The last time that happened was when they announced StarCraft 2.
    (6) The last time a WWI and BlizzCon were held in the same year was after SC2 was announced. There is a BlizzCon organised for this year.
    (7) BlizzCon 2008 will be much (50% I believe) bigger.
    (8) The WWIs come with a parental escort recommendation due to content of an adult nature. Diablo is the only mature franchise Blizzard have worked on. WoW and SC2 are far from adult in nature.
    (9) Several press organisations who are known for being "on the ball" have already hinted at/slipped up entirely about a game announcement at the WWIs.
    (10) Multiple links have been made between the teaser and the Diablo franchise that are more than coincidence.

I could argue that you are assuming too much. Has a Blizzard employee told you that is ice? No.

Considering that the Hel rune (shown in the pic) has the rune rank 15, and the 15th letter in the alphabet is O they might reveal more runes to make up the word DIABLO just like the image numbers.

Personally I hope and wish it's D3 or some sort of diablo mmorpg :D. Awesome work guys, keep us posted!

Yes they never done a teaser for an expansion but WoTLK is a HUGE expantion with HUGE upgrades theres already a ton of hype about it so why wouldn't they tease us? Do you even realize how many already have pre-ordered the game already? So Yes I am willing to bet money hell gold on my server that its something purtaining to WoTLK.

It could be two anoucements into one set of teasers. Lich King and Diablo but I really dont think the graphics are diablo.

Now if you still have the teasers for diablo 2 floating around I may change my mind after i see them ora copy of the diablo runes I may be more inclined to believe you but from what ive seen I seriously doubt its Diablo.

If anything blizard is spelling out a date. It may very well wind up being 04/15/2009 because the 15th is a game release day. Just saying.

If not it could still be spelling world.

PLUS theres only 4 pieces to the puzzle how the heck is that going to spell diablo?

Lastly Those four letters can be both used in World of Warcraft and Diablo

Now as for what Smisk said I could seriously see the potential for D3 to be a Mmorpg.

secondly yes those images are ice, why the heck would blizzard put as the image titles ice?

  • Tue, Jun 24 2008 10:05 AM ()

No, Diablo should never be an mmorpg. It's perfect how it already is. Beside at least to me how WoW works is at least some what based on Diablo 2 any ways.

But to put in my own two cents that it is D3 since just being me I think of the end of DoL since the breaking of the thing I won't say to give it away to any one that doesn't want to know.

  • Tue, Jun 24 2008 10:05 AM ()

The Burning Crusade was a HUGE expansion that added more to the game than WotLK does. It was also the very first expansion. Sadly, it had no teaser work to speak of. It was just announced. WotLK has already been announced. Press have been flown to Blizzard HQ to view previews of the game. Major gaming magazines already have hands on articles up about the game. Hell, people got to play the game at the WWIs and BlizzCon last year. A teaser campaign now would be a pointless waste of money and wouldn't attract the attention of the media, which is one of the most crucial goals of a teaser campaign. Frankly, the games media wouldn't be interested in a WotLK teaser campaign this late. It's just not a logical conclusion.

As for the comments about graphics, who would have imagined, years ago, that a title famous for being an RTS would launch into the RPG game space, let alone the MMO game space. It is safe to assume that whatever Blizzard present with Diablo 3 will be an evolution of the previous games, both in terms of game play and graphics.

You can view the comparison of the Diablo 2 runes compared to the runes in the two splash images at www.diablofans.com. I didn't post them here because I didn't want to steal their traffic. I am a massive lover of that site and I love what they are doing for the Diablo community so I felt that, instead of leeching off what they know, I would link through to them. Shout out to MD and co. Keep up the good work <3

You are assuming that there are 4 pieces to the puzzle? and/or that they will release a piece each day.

Sadly, Diablo 3 probably won't be an MMORPG as that does exactly what you accused a traditional RPG of doing - steps on WoWs toes. Blizzard won't announce their next gen MMO for a good few years. Not while the cash cow is still holding out strong.

Of course, I'm saying all of this as a massive D3 and WoW fan. I'll keep the actual news posts impartial ;-)
