Blizzard Entertainment

Confirmed: Blizzard to announce new game at WWI

Good news -- it looks like Blizzard's teasers that we've been reporting on are in fact for a new game, and not for Wrath of the Lich King or StarCraft II like some have been speculating.

Why do I say this? Well, Zyuu reported on an interview with Rob Pardo at a conference in Paris, France yesterday over at Gamasutra. What he didn't mention in that news article is a little tidbit from a Q&A session with Pardo, where he unleashed this:

"So you want me to announce the game before our announcement?" he said. "No offense, but I think there's like 300 people here, and I'll be ripped apart by 8000 people there [at the Invitational] if I pre-announce it - but it's going to be really exciting. I think everybody here will be really excited about the announcement."

So, now that we have that out of the way, we can finally lay to rest the thoughts that this is anything related to Wrath of the Lich King or StarCraft II. Nope, this isn't going to be the announcement of Beta for either game, nor their release dates. This is something new, something big. Potentially something very big, considering they're hiring full-force for their Top Secret project -- the "Next-Gen MMO."

What do you think it is, now that we know for sure it is indeed something new? It's a guessing game at this point, but that's half the fun -- especially with the great teasers Blizzard has been providing. Personally, I'm waiting with bated breath for teaser #4 tomorrow, to confirm some of my theories; assuming the hole gets bigger, that is.

Whatever it is, I hope they do better with it than what they've done with WoW. Tom Chilton is taking that game to Hell in a Hand basket right now.

I still think the splash screens on worldofwarcraft.com and blizzard.com are unrelated

    that *** looks icy no?

    edit:

If you look at what the lich king is standing on on http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/ it looks exactly the same as the splash screen, even has runes in the ice etc.

And of course death knights use runes to cast spells and blizzard are notorious for reusing images/icons.

But having said that why would they go to the effort of hiding snippits of info in the page if we weren't supposed to be trying to figure something out. Time will tell unfortunately.

I am no guru nor do i pretend to keep up as well as others but, i have heard many rumors, as im sure everyone has. The biggest one that seems to be on the market atm is Diablo mmo, which would pit demons vs angels, and the righteous similar to horde and alliance.

I have also heard rumor of a Starcraft MMO which imo would be a fantastic addition to the mmo market given that good sci-fi mmo's are so very hard to come by and Blizzard has the technology the money and the man power to dump into something truly amazing given the success of World of Warcraft.

Although very unlikely i have also heard of a possible World of Warcraft II. This would be a bad business decision, imo, by Blizzard because you would not necessarily be generating a new fan base but rather continuing to capture one that already exists in the original World of Warcraft.... which still has many years before it has run its course at which point they could potentially introduce a new W.o.W. or move on to other stories.

Another thing that nearly guarantees success is Blizzards astounding track record. Every or nearly every game they have put onto shelves has done well to my recollection i have not seen or heard of a flop though i do not have the research to back that up.

In any and all cases unless the mighty shall fall, the new mmo will more than likely blow the gaming scene away and dominate a little of the same and perhaps other genres of the gaming market.

was never too big on Diablo. Didn't like the whole demon theme and being stuck in a depressing hell 24/7. A starcraft mmo, however, sounds extremely interesting. Either way, our votes won't matter now since they've probably developed a good portion of this new game already.

I still think there is going to be alot of WotLK stuff announced there, but I don't think the new game announcement comes as a big shock to many people. I'll put my bet on either D3 or a new franchise all together.

LOL I agree with Alu it would be another warcraft game to expand the lore or it could be both a new game and Lich King.

I have not wavered my hope lol

I also think its something with wotlk there but if you think about how much people still play diablo2! and still today people are buying it and start to play it. then all domains like www.diablo3.com where domains you can buy if you go now on these pages thay cant be found or redirect you to a blizzard hp.
So i think and also hope thay continue the diablo story with diablo3

have you not talked to any of the 10 million subscribers?

  • Wed, Jun 25 2008 11:03 PM ()

I think it is a sure bet to be Diablo 3. They have always said that they have not forgotten any of their franchises. And they have been hiring for this secret game project for awhile. One of the ads even said "Experience with diablo and its art was a plus." I forget what type of job it was....possibly graphics?

In any event, they know that with the success of the previous two, they could probably let it out at any time and people would jump for it.

I could Also easily see the potential for MMO there. Create a hero, choose a side (Heaven or Hell) and go to train, level up, and fight. Each side would have their own versions of equipment, of course.

    :) :) :)

Kudos for spelling "bated breath" correctly. Most people spell it "baited", which is just silly.

When the hole in the middle of the teaser gets bigger it'll reveal a terren worker dude chipping at the crystal. Wishful thinking.... 8 D

WCIV, and it will create a new set of lore for them to expound upon in future WoW expansions. Makes sense since WotLK is the end of the current storyline, and they need to keep that cash cow going. Not that I'm complaining...

It's stated obviously, that it's got nothing to do with Wow, nor Starcraft, and well Diablo 3 WAS to released, only question was when?? Since Blizzard bought www.diablo3.com for a reason, I think that it's Diablo 3 that's to be announced. And I've heard very much things that Diablo 3 is gonna be a mmo indeed. and I don't think it's on the wow engine, but an entire new engine (Hence this line: This is something new, something big. Potentially something very big, considering they're hiring full-force for their Top Secret project -- the "Next-Gen MMO." )

So I really really hope it's Diablo 3, cause I've awaited it so long. I stopped playing Diablo 2, cause the many Botusers and hackers!.

Oh well, let's keep our fingers crossed
