Blizzard to announce new product next month!

Kotaku initially broke this story:

It took a good day of calls and emails, but Blizzard just got back to us about the rumor floating around that Starcraft 2 will be announced next month during their World Wide Invitation in Seoul, South Korea.

According to a Korean website, StarCraft 2 is being developed in 3D with a new race and lots of changes for existing units. The site went on to say that additional details would be revealed during Blizzard's WWI on May 19th in Seoul.

When reached for comment today this was Blizzard's official response:

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."

So that's a yes on a StarCraft 2, eventually, and a yes to a product announcement next month. The only question now is are they one in the same. Brian Crecente

So what does this mean? Well, at next month's Worldwide Invitational, Blizzard is going to announce a new product. "New" is a very subjective term, though. Could this be the new game universe Blizzard stated they're creating? Or will it be a follow-up to the smash hit Diablo or Starcraft franchises? I personally can't wait for Starcraft 2 - as it appears by this article that they've confirmed plans to eventually make it - but this doesn't look to be the title that Blizzard will announce next month.

So what are your ideas? Let's get the theorycraft flowing and see what everyone's opinions are for Blizzard's next game!

It would make more sense for them to offer a genre different than a fantasy setting. That's why I think that a sci-fi theme and thereby something Starcraft related would be a smart move on thier part. It would help them resolidify that sector of the market for them somewhat and bring back to them a market share that was probably dwindling to other companies more active with sci-fi themed games. .

    Starcraft TCG maybe?

A Starcraft MMO would be interesting - They make ridiculous amounts of money on WoW, why not expand that out for the sci-fi crowd that may not be big 'fantasy' fans? I'd end up playing both. ^_^
