Blizzard to develop Next-Gen MMO

Well, if the news of Blizzard announcing a new title next month isn't enough, it looks like they're also working on a next-gen MMO.

As you can see by their Employment Opportunities page, they're looking to bring on multiple people for a "Next-Gen MMO."

The three openings are for Lead Engine Programmer, Lead Tools Programmer, and Lead Technical Artist, so it's safe to say that this MMO is in the very early design stages.

That said, could this new product announcement next month, and this MMO be one in the same? Only time will tell, but this summer should be an interesting one, to say the least.

    world of starcraft? :p

World of Starcraft would be interesting to see. Wouldn't be very creative on their part though, seeing as how they have already changed one of their RTS games into an MMORPG.

I honestly doubt the two will be the same subject. It is unlike blizz to announce a project that early in the production.

Throw some flavor into MMOs and force some teamwork. Your character dies, it dies. End of story. Toss in the ability to raid and seize lands from your opp would be pretty nice. Or join the SW or IF army and attack other lands. That would be a neat trick don't you think?

That would be a great trick to have us be a part in a giant war 2 cities against 2 cities...think about how that will look like...Giant war...more than maybe 200+ people in it maybe from just one city. Pretty cool

I'd rather have an MMO set in the Diablo atmosphere! :)

Fantasy always does better than sci-fi MMOs.

What if all of the employment opportunities are for World of Warcraft?

I hope they focus on PvP now which should eliminate timesinks.

With AoC, LOTRO, and DF all creating such buzz in the industry it is not surprising that Blizzard will jump on this task of "next gen" mmo's as well. Although it is unlikely that the two announcements will have anything to do with eachother. They might be releasing a new RTS game and world of starcraft is a good possibillity for the mmo. I would like blizzard to reach beyond their current titles and introduce something truly unique though but they, like other companies, are in it for the money. Who knows maybe they have been reading about all the hype that darkfall has been getting and think they have what it takes to squash it. I for one would like to see them do something unique and fresh and since blizzard has one of the best support teams in the business I am truly excited about whatever they bring to the table.

Next gen MMO? Please, blizzard would be stupid to release another MMO, they can barely maintain WoW, and if you are going to tell me that's incorrect you must know you are fooling yourself. WoW is poorly maintained, to jump in with a second MMO would be capitalist suicide.

@Fidda, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

    Its Galaxy of Starcraft.

There is already sneek previews out, looks crappy with beta, but you can see where the possibilities are.

    Its Starcraft MMO.

Great direction for Blizz, they rule the mideval mmo's, now for the futuristic.
