Blizzard Entertainment

The Countdown - Part 2

As if the news this weekend wasn't enough to get everyone excited about Blizzard's upcoming game announcement, there's a new hint to this unfolding story.

www.starcraft2.com has the exact same splash imagery as the Blizzard homepage. It's also important to note that Blizzard owns the Starcraft2 URL, as seen on Network Solutions.

The game is expected to be announced Saturday, so we're less than three days away. Does this latest hint have any substance, or is it just something being used to throw folks off on what the announced title will be?

    They've owned it since 2003.

I can remember Blizzard owning that domain name since the Starcraft expansion came out.

Starcraft2.com was created 1999 according to the domain whois info.

It's quite naturaly for companies to register domains for possible sequels, since it doesn't really cost anything and it's easier than trying to acquire it later from other people. Starcraft2.com points to blizzard.com right now, hence the "same" splash page. It would be quite silly to leave a dead domain if you own it.

Thus, the domain doesn't really tell anything.

Regardless, my bet is on SC2.

    Nothing special about www.starcraft2.com.

    techno ~ # host www.starcraft2.com www.starcraft2.com is an alias for www.blizzard.com. www.blizzard.com has address 216.148.223.72

It just points to and gives the default www.blizzard.com page.

Good catch on it simply pointing to the Blizzard homepage. Hmm, then the mystery is still unsolved! Ah well, three more days I suppose. :P

Blizzard has owned that address since 1999 and it has always pointed to Blizzard's site.

It most likley will be Warcraft 4 or Starcraft 2. I doubt it will be Diablo 3 since it would be almost the same as WoW. Then again, it could be an entirely new series?

    They've had it since September 24, 1999

Again, yes, I realize that. I was quoting what was said in the article I linked.

    Carbonic:

"Though Blizzard has owned Starcraft2.com since 2003, the fact the site is now actively promoting a game--and not merely redirecting to Blizzard.com--is indicative of something in the offing."

Taken from the Gamespot article. I'm not doubting you, but it's written there as 2003.
