Blizzard's New Top Secret MMO

Earlier today, the Blizzard Entertainment website updated its Job section to include mention of a, "Top Secret MMO."

As soon as fan sites saw the hints, the speculation mill churned up and some obvious and not so obvious ideas of what the next MMO out of Blizzard may be.

Starcraft MMO

We may be witnessing the first stages of a new Starcraft MMO based on the previous approach Blizzard took with World of Warcraft. Blizzard used Warcraft III and the expansion to tidy up the lore and certain plot lines so that the game could be adapted to fit an MMO environment and this could be what they are doing with the single player Starcraft II campaign. Rob Pardo revelealed back in August that Blizzard planned to return to the shelved Starcraft: Ghost so this could be a sign that we may get a console-based MMO.

Diablo MMO

At the end of Lords of Destruction, the award winning expansion to Diablo II, the gates of Hell were left wide open for demons to walk the Earth and so a Heaven vs. Hell no-holds-barred fight to the death isn't too far fetched an idea, surely? Diablo has been a franchise that has been untouched for almost as long as Starcraft was before the announcement of Starcraft II so we may see a Diablo relaunch in the MMO genre.

A Brand New Franchise

Some of you may remember that a couple of years ago, Blizzard hinted at a brand new IP to go along side their current titles. It is possible the new MMO may have nothing to do with Starcraft or Diablo and Mr. Metzen may be hard at work right now creating the base for another award-winning franchise to add to Blizzards diversity. Perhaps a new IP that is specifically designed for the MMO genre and not adapted from an existing genre is what Blizzard are planning?

Whatever it is, we should know by now that they are very careful with the way they handle publicity so the fact that these hints occurred on Hallowe'en may be full of purpose. After all, some of us have suspected that they have been working on a new MMO for a while so why did the Irvine-based game gods wait until now to start dropping the teasers?

We'll just have to wait and see...

While it could be a nice idea in theory to throw out a Starcraft MMO just to get one out that's not like what they already have, futuristic MMOs haven't been nearly as popular as Fantasy ones overall. Because of that it could just be wasted money. Not to say that whatever Blizzard would do with the idea wouldn't be great, I'm sure it will, just that the majority of MMO players prefer the Fantasy setting. Heck, look at how Tabula Rasa is doing right now. Maybe not overall the best game, but not many people are giving it a chance anyway because of the genre it's based on.

Of course, this could be wishful thinking because I'd love to see a Diablo MMO. But even talking to my bf, he loves Starcraft and would still rather see a Diablo one. Or even something new, which I say Blizzard is due for by now. Take up where Gods and Heroes exploded before launch and do something Mythological. ;)

Didn't blizzard say they were upgrading the graphics and things to a more next-gen level in WotLK? If I am remembering that correctly then their post about the job has nothing to do with a top-secret mmo. I don't think this guy knew what quotations actually denotes when reporting something like this. The post says nothing about top secret, and nothing about a new mmo. The screens shots I've seen of WotLK have definitely been cosmetically upgraded from BC. I don't think we'd see a pre-exposure post about a job from blizz anyways. They keep their crap under wraps.

That isn't the case and your information is inaccurate. Blizzard announced that they would NOT be upgrading the graphics for WotLK, instead aiming to keep the system requirements to the same standards as the previous expansion ond the original game. They did however say that they would be slightly altering the textures used for things like snow but that it would not be a major overhaul.

If you go to the Blizzard site (US) you will see that in the game logo box on the Jobs section there is a TOP Secret image. You will then notice that a numerous amount of these jobs are advertised as work for a Next-Gen MMO title. No other team at Blizzard is listing jobs for this type of work, even the World of Warcraft positions.

If Blizzard could drive Hellgate: London out fo the market it would prove something. They have tried to undermine other companies (such as ArenaNet and EA Mythic) before so it would not be alien for them. The announcement on Hallowe'en could be siugnificant seeing as this is the time we go round dressed up as demons and ghouls etc... :-D (Or Starfleet officers in my case but I did not admit that :o)

Diablo MMO? I always considered WoW to be the Diablo MMO. I know the lore and what not is different, but still...its too similar.

a lot of people's posts here seem to sound as if this new MMO would be out soon, well consider that it takes 5 years minimum to craft an original mmo world, not a couple months or a year. as well i have heard from reliable sources that a new diabllo is well well into production, and i don't expect Blizzard to join the ever failing marker of "first person shooter mmo's" even startwars galaxies was viewed as a failier after everyone got over the initial hype of a SW MMO.

also on a side note blizzard make a remark a while back that any new MMO would not be based on a current game title, AKA they dont want lore whiners, it was a off hand remark at some convention.

False, mmo engines take about a year to complete. Depending on the size of the world and the size of the team working on it, you can finish a world in just a few months. Considering Blizzard hired WAY more people than it should have for WotLK, you should expect a lot of those going towards this supposed "top secret mmo".

Short, if they use the WoW mmo engine and just nailed a couple extra elements in there and made some new models and maps, hell, this could be done in a little less than one year.

i know what it is. World of Murloc: Wrath of the Burning Murlocs. in this game you will play as the mobs, destroying the humanoids of azeroth! you can have different classes like Tidehunters, Oracles, or just "Murloc"! dont deny this, we all know its going to happen someday in the future.
    40 murloc raid of stormwind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok now that that thoughts gone, diablo mmo sounds good but it just wouldnt feel right, point and click is the best. and starcraft mmo really wouldnt work out because of different units etc, how do you play as zerg?
im hoping for a new type of game... a game about deadly ponys with rifles and spiked armor. hell ya.

This must be an acitve year for blizz, TBC SC2, WLK. I've played the Warcraft games but I started WoW about 6 mo. ago. I'm thinking maybe something different from SC since they are coming out with SC2.
If it was an SC mmorpg, I'd quit wow and play that.

Keep in mind that who knows how long they could have been working on this. They may be looking for more people to add to their collection but maybe the basis is already set? From the looks of it all they are looking for is mainly character and enviro "artists".

We have to remember that the first hints at Starcraft II were not dropped untill well into the developement cycle so we can only assume that there will be a Blizzcon 2008 and this title may get announced there. That said, however, Blizzard have said that they would be announcing three new titles before the end of this year... so far, we have had 2...

I think instead of wondering what lore the new MMO will be based on, whether it’s a diablo or starcraft MMO, or even a WoW2 (which I’d love to see), the thing I'm wondering is what will be the focus of the MMO. PvE or PvP? WoW started out as mainly a PvE game, and I think it still is mainly a PvE game, they have added PvP elements to the game [PvE rant] but its been getting ridiculously annoying how classes are being changed because they have elements that make them overpowered in PvP. [/PvE rant]

A diablo MMO would be PvE focused imo, because diablo games put a hero (the player) against the forces of hell. From my point of view diablo would be an odd game for PvP. If you think about how Warcraft and starcraft were played, you had campaigns where you would control a hero and their subordinates and through the different campaigns you would control the heroes of the different races and factions of the game. In diablo you always played the forces of heaven fighting the forces of hell.

On the other hand, I think a starcraft MMO would be better suited for a PvP game since there are three factions that are fighting each other. I never got really involved in the starcraft campaigns so feel free to yell at me about this. From what I remember when I played the starcraft campaigns, you would come into conflict/contact with the heroes of the other factions. I don’t really have many arguments for a PvP focused starcraft MMO, but it just makes more sense in my head than a PvE focused starcraft MMO.

Also, you have to think about why WoW has been so successful, it was based on a previously successful franchise. It already had a fan base ready to dive in to the world of their favorite RTS. Creating a brand new MMO franchise would be a riskier move since you have to fan base ready to dive into the game (other than the fans of the blizzard company).

I think that the MMO they are working on will either be a new WoW (WoW2 FTW) with a PvE focus and lesser PvP elements or a starcraft MMO with a PvP focus and lesser PvE elements (they are releasing starcraft 2 almost as if setting up the lore for the MMO). Releasing a PvP focused MMO to run alongside WoW would allow them to bring back the focus of WoW to PvE, whether they'd do that or not is unlikely, it's just my hope lol.

wait, why would there be a wow2 when expansions are being released to make WoW bigger.

The only warcraft sequel(whatever next game) that will come out is Warcraft 4, but i dont see how they could do it unles they dove into the future a bit more and made more lore to move the story along.

I'd love to see a diablo game. i have some PvP ideas, but its basically duels, like D2 had. Maybe even a big battleground type thing you join where you and a bunch of buddies do challenges against NPCs.

Id like to see Diablo MMO!

i think someone mentioned the idea of a warcraft game that would take place in the old warcraft lore, it would be great imo because it would mean new content, you could fight the old evils and, as it stands in the game, one of the biggest problems is class imbalances and missing itemazation. both of which you could easily fix by realising a new game, perhaps even change the graphic style of the game to fit the older feel of the game.

to be honest, i said it would be a wow2 because i would love it lol

I would love to see a starcraft MMO - mainly because there are yet to be any good sci-fi based MMOs.
I've tried Galaxies and Eve, and taken a hint of a look at Tabula Rasa, but none of them quite have the polish of WoW.

I'd prefer Warhammer 40k :P but obviously blizzard won't be making that ^.^

    Lol
Now, the Lost Vikings is a great DOS game, actually it's one of the first games I ever played (and of course Prince of Persia). Aah, I can still hear the sound of the beeper speaker humming the tune, and visualize the intro screen... Nostalgy!

"The only warcraft sequel(whatever next game) that will come out is Warcraft 4, but i dont see how they could do it unles they dove into the future a bit more and made more lore to move the story along."

Yay, Maybe they could've made a new game picking up the story many years after the end of warcraft 3, maybe like "the new world" or something (Zelda: TWW, anyone??^^ [There, the old Hyrule, and the evil within had been sealed down by a vast ocean, turning the mountain tops into islands, where the new adventure started. The hero then had to gain access to the legendary sword, and travel to old Hyrule to defeat the evil Ganondorf once and for all!] Awesome game)

Now, I'm not quite sure how the story in WC3 ends, but maybe they could make a story about the descendants of Thrall and the other warlords, who discovers the past, and must go back there to fight or something, I think that could be interesting =).

World of Starcraft: Wrath of Diablo, the lich king and the boogie men.
thats is. woot. combine all 3 games for a superior game! rawr.
