Blizzard Confirms Next-Gen MMO

In a happening on the US World of Warcraft forums, Drysc has confirmed that the Next-Gen MMO references popping up all over the Blizzard Entertainment job pages are not referring to another World of Warcraft expansion.

No, it is an unannounced Next-Gen MMO.

And that doesn't mean an expansion for World of Warcraft either.

Now all we have to do is wait and see which franchise Blizzard are using for their new MMO title.

Wow cant wait to see what it is

My guess would be Starcraft or Diablo. Who knows, though, could be Lost Vikings. Also, having essentially been bought by Activision, it could be any of a number of franchises or an original IP. No matter what, I'm interested.

I bid for Diablo Online. Many kind of characters and so on ^^

I doubt it's a Starcraft based MMO, because they are currently working on another Starcraft based title. I'm also not sure if it would be a good idea, since it could possibly be a direct competitor for WoW.

I'd place my bets on new Diablo. Even diablo 2 could have been considered to be a sort of MMO, in addition to the fact that Blizzard has stated that they would like to revisit the Diablo saga, as there seems to be quite a bit of interest in it in the fanbase. Diablo is also a different kind of game than WoW, so it wouldn't be a direct competitor either.

I'd have to say taht they had only just released Warcraft 3 when they announced World of warcraft.

They used Warcraft 3 and its expansion to tidy up the Wracraft lore to be more MMO friendly so it isn't illogical for them to do so with StarCraft 2.

I remember Blizzard saying that the WoW engine was completely modular. (meaning that they could replace any element of it without having to recode the rest) as such, they also said that they plan to take advantage of that 'some time soon' I believe was the line.

Now this could possibly mean that they are upgrading WoW to help it compete in the new generation of games and on all the new hardware. Most new MMOs are being made to fit the mold and they are making WoW show its age.

Just a theory...but I doubt they would pass up the opportunity.

On a side note, the whole not doing something because it would compete with WoW. They really don't care considering it is all money going to them. Plus the chances are likely that people would play both. Having played this game since release I can say that if they lost a couple million players I wouldn't even notice.

Im just wondering if you have seen any of the gameplay footage? I guess not.
Its not the "same old graphics". Its the same style in the animation and feel of the game, but the thing looks brilliant, while starcraft is getting dated graphicswise.

Again I have to push for the Idea that it is a FPSMMO set in the Starcraft universe. That or Diablo. A Starcraft RPG doesnt work, with WoW as model. 300 types of flamethrowers for the Firebat class? The same for each individual armorslot? And, because of the potential 3-way factionwar, a zergling looting new claws? Ya rite.

If Im right, expect AvP2, with RPG elements and a persistent world.

They are noticing. For sure. WoW is migrating to China and loosing players in both the US and Europe. And they probably dont even earn a tenth of the money on a Chineese player compared to a European. Make that a hundredth since they arent even distributing the game there. Oh, and thats while keeping the servercosts the same.

AFAIK, The9 is running WoW in China, so where are Blizzard's server costs?

Edit: Aah, I see you meant the global server costs =)

honestly im hoping for a starcraft mmo but like hf1fgod said, but in my words, killing a reaver and getting an "improved" hydralisk "spit" just wouldnt be right :p
i think its going to be an entire new franchise, perhaps a RTS mmo? lol

Well both Diablo and Starcraft MMO have their appeal and negatives. But lets keep in mind 2 things. First is that while Blizzard does make much effort to adhere to the lore or existing titles there isn't anything that says they couldn't or wouldn't add or modify the lore to suit their (Blizzard's) needs. Secondly, which actually came to my mind first, is the longggggg wait for Blizzard to actually have something. Look how long it took them to get WoW going. Hopefully the wait time will not be that long but if it does we all might see the Next Gen part be old by the time it comes out.

I hope they take as long as they did with Wow, with the other products they develop. They really turned out a great product and the whole "we'll release it when it's done" has proven to be pretty damn good.
