Curse

Curse Client 2.1 RC1 Release!

I know it's been a while since I posted my last status update for the project. I apologize for the silence, but we're nearing payday!

So now, after several months of intensive development I want to bring to you guys the first release candidate for the 2.1 line.

What's New‽

Well, almost everything! Well, almost.

What were the issues again?

Here is a brief recap of what I posted in my last announcement as some of the major issues.

   * Ignoring manual deletions
* Installing over addons
* Downgrading addons
* UI feedback failures
* Poorly worded options and button text
* Too much automation in some places, too little automation in others
* Lack of features that are considered defacto standards
* General reliability

Now let's talk about what we did about them.

What we did about them!

UI Changes

The UI has gone through some major overhauls. Hrm, how can I explain this......

The old client

The new client

There are more changes than can be seen in that screenshot, but I think it gives a rough idea of the depth of the changes.

New Features

Well we didn't get everything I talked about in the last message done. Here's the list. I've struck through things we've finished. Things that are works in progress I'm marking with italics.

   * Alternate Packages - It's back!
* Dependency Resolution
* Manual Deletion Detection
* Alpha Support
* Multiple Game Support - Even over network drives!
* Version Pinning
* Submodule support
* Saved Variable Scrubber - It's not 100% tested and polished yet.
* Automated and Manual Backups
* Real Configuration Box - The game manager takes the place of most options.
* Deletion before upgrade
* Uninstalled Package Listing - It's the unknown addon listing.

We'll be finishing things up as soon as possible.

Changed Behaviors & Methods

Discovery and Detection of versions If anything we're too conservative now. We've gone through extraordinary pains to make sure that we know exactly which version of the addon you're using. If we don't know, we don't touch it. It can still get a little confused sometimes, mainly if an addon is shared by more than one project. We'll be working out a tweak for that situation shortly. Changes to Defaults Yep they got changed. You may not like some of them, but you shouldn't find them offensive! Popup Questions Well, 99% of the time you'll never see a popup question. Unless you're doing something that you can't undo. Like deleting an addon. We don't want a misclick to make you a sad panda...

The Mac Version

Do you want the good or the bad news first?

I'll start with the bad. It's not here.

The good news is, we're now actively getting it ready for it's first night out. I can't promise exactly when just yet, but Soon has never been so close. I hope to start leaking alphas out next week, but again I can promise nothing!

Conclusion

The one thing I don't think anyone can argue with is that this client is hands down superior to it's predecessor. There is not a doubt in my mind regarding that.

Is it perfect? Of course not. Are there bugs? Sadly, yes I'm sure there are. However, there was no way we could justify continuing to hold back this update and letting people continue to use the old version.

We're looking for feedback as we're getting ready to put this out there to all 700k+ users in the next few weeks. Please use the ticket tracker I'm going to link below to report any feedback. But please, try and see if the ticket already exists.

I also want to apologize to all you guys who've been struggling with the 2.0.0.14 client for so long. Support on it has been weak to non existent, I'm going to be keeping a tabs on things much much closer with the new client in order to ensure that the same backlog doesn't happen with this one.

So guys, last thing I'm going to tell you is how to get the new client. So make sure to check the link section below!

    Like the client, it was recommened and so am using it to update my warhammer online mods. However due to the recession, will not be abled to afford your premium service subscription to continue using your product.

    It seems that at least on my installation, CurseClient insists on downloading the (new) addon "epgp"... weird...

    Arcadian:

    I completely understand wanting to have a full working product ;)

    The client will be able to manage addons obtained from other sites, but it will only be able to get you updates  and recognize them if those addons appear on curse.  Fortunately we have the largest addon repository available.

    I've no problem responding rationally and reasonably as long as the person I'm talking to is willing to listen to what I'm saying ;)

    Let me know if you have any more concerns mate.

  • Thu, Feb 26 2009 9:16 AM ()

    thank you for entertaining my concerns and addressing them directly. I appreciate it. It was my understanding that the curse updater would not work with curse alone, but would also allow me to update addons I got from wowinterface and I thought at least one other domain.

    also a specific thank you for being mature enough to discuss this without assuming it was a 'troll' and responding emotionally. These were serious concerns and questions and I feel you've addressed them.

    While I wish the development well, I do plan to wait until a full release, but at that time, will definitely install and use this program.

    Arcadian:

    We're not developing our multi-site updater.  We don't download any files directly from wowinterface or any site other than Curse.

    So no we don't steal bandwidth from anyone, we host all the files available through the client, and do so with the author's permission.

    Meanwhile WowMatrix continually evades the measures meant to deter them, and neither hosts their own files, nor do they serve them with the authors consent.

  • Wed, Feb 25 2009 11:55 AM ()

    Never mind. It just took a lot of time.

  • Wed, Feb 25 2009 11:52 AM ()

    The new version of Questhelper wont download.

  • Wed, Feb 25 2009 11:18 AM ()

    please forgive me for coming off as antagonistic, but it still just feels rather hypocritical and self serving to denounce other multi-site updaters while developing and publishing your own multi-site updaters. How does providing a direct link to a download page on a website equate to 'stolen bandwidth' - the curse updater is doing to do the same to wowinterface.com - are you paying them for each download any given installation of the curse updater pulls from their domain?

    Im not saying what you are doing is wrong - but Im asking you to hold yourself to your own standards, or just stop the self-serving demonization of any other updaters presently available.

    How does this updater NOT steal bandwidth as opposed to all the other updaters stealing bandwidth - if you can tell me (even if its a PM, thats fine. Im not trying to grand-stand here) how your updater doesn't steal bandwidth, and how mine (WM) does, I'd gladly make the switch.

    ArcadianDelSol: Was being a little more metaphorical than a literal payday :P

    And of course we're trying to make money, we're a company afterall, and we're not a non-profit.  However, we are going to be passing along money back to the authors and we don't steal other sites bandwidth or resources.

    dolagan:  The client updates are secure and controlled, also it will never run any type of executables.  Addons in and of themselves are incapable of hacking computers or accounts.

    However, We'll continue to be proactive in adding more security and reducing risk to our users.

    What security features have been added to the curse client? The beauty of the curse client is that it keeps my addons up to date without having to get involved. The disadvantage is that it keeps me up to date without having to get involved. As we move to more useful and automated solutions the need for security increases.

    My brand new computer was hacked within three days of bringing it home. The only source of addons I use is curse.

    "we're nearing payday."

    uhm - wasn't it this site's administrative opinion that the problem with WowMatrix is that it attempted to profit from the work of the addon authorship community?

    HOWEVER I LIKE THE CHANGES - I may consider no longer using WM in favor of this...what's that? I have to pay a fee to have an 'update all...' feature?

    Whose making money off the addon authorship community, again?

    OMG thank you for adding support for multiple game installs. You rock.

    Not only can I now have my PTR install, but I can also keep my laptop in synch with my desktop much easier.

    Is that so? You're working on a Mac version of the curse client.

    If that's so, than pleeease go for portable, and use the Qt application framework, which provides real platform independency and would allow you to even run natively on Linux (those WoW users that use a win32 emulation layer to run WoW, but would love to run curse client natively).

    YOUR advantage: same code base for any of the platforms.

    Kael: Very nice to hear. I only made such apparent since a lot of software likes to use that bottom right corner of Display 0. Sometimes CClient and FeedReader or a few other things all fight over that spot and it's a bit messy and confusing.

    Suqata: Not at the moment. For now it's just WoW and WAR. However judging from how flexible and prompt the developers are, they might put it in eventually.

    Does this only work with WOW? If not how do i get it to work with RoM?

    sabledrakon: in the release we'll be making later today the client will no longer show those popups unless it has focus.

  • Fri, Feb 20 2009 11:17 AM ()

    Kael: It's mostly just the hourly pop-up of the progress box that's getting to me. I've yet to notice any system impact during the scan itself. But it is nice to know that it'll be configurable at somepoint and I can wait patiently knowing that it's on the roadmap.
