Curse Client 2.1 RC1 Release!

I know it's been a while since I posted my last status update for the project. I apologize for the silence, but we're nearing payday!

So now, after several months of intensive development I want to bring to you guys the first release candidate for the 2.1 line.

What's New‽

Well, almost everything! Well, almost.

What were the issues again?

Here is a brief recap of what I posted in my last announcement as some of the major issues.

   * Ignoring manual deletions
* Installing over addons
* Downgrading addons
* UI feedback failures
* Poorly worded options and button text
* Too much automation in some places, too little automation in others
* Lack of features that are considered defacto standards
* General reliability

Now let's talk about what we did about them.

What we did about them!

UI Changes

The UI has gone through some major overhauls. Hrm, how can I explain this......

The old client

The new client

There are more changes than can be seen in that screenshot, but I think it gives a rough idea of the depth of the changes.

New Features

Well we didn't get everything I talked about in the last message done. Here's the list. I've struck through things we've finished. Things that are works in progress I'm marking with italics.

   * Alternate Packages - It's back!
* Dependency Resolution
* Manual Deletion Detection
* Alpha Support
* Multiple Game Support - Even over network drives!
* Version Pinning
* Submodule support
* Saved Variable Scrubber - It's not 100% tested and polished yet.
* Automated and Manual Backups
* Real Configuration Box - The game manager takes the place of most options.
* Deletion before upgrade
* Uninstalled Package Listing - It's the unknown addon listing.

We'll be finishing things up as soon as possible.

Changed Behaviors & Methods

Discovery and Detection of versions If anything we're too conservative now. We've gone through extraordinary pains to make sure that we know exactly which version of the addon you're using. If we don't know, we don't touch it. It can still get a little confused sometimes, mainly if an addon is shared by more than one project. We'll be working out a tweak for that situation shortly. Changes to Defaults Yep they got changed. You may not like some of them, but you shouldn't find them offensive! Popup Questions Well, 99% of the time you'll never see a popup question. Unless you're doing something that you can't undo. Like deleting an addon. We don't want a misclick to make you a sad panda...

The Mac Version

Do you want the good or the bad news first?

I'll start with the bad. It's not here.

The good news is, we're now actively getting it ready for it's first night out. I can't promise exactly when just yet, but Soon has never been so close. I hope to start leaking alphas out next week, but again I can promise nothing!

Conclusion

The one thing I don't think anyone can argue with is that this client is hands down superior to it's predecessor. There is not a doubt in my mind regarding that.

Is it perfect? Of course not. Are there bugs? Sadly, yes I'm sure there are. However, there was no way we could justify continuing to hold back this update and letting people continue to use the old version.

We're looking for feedback as we're getting ready to put this out there to all 700k+ users in the next few weeks. Please use the ticket tracker I'm going to link below to report any feedback. But please, try and see if the ticket already exists.

I also want to apologize to all you guys who've been struggling with the 2.0.0.14 client for so long. Support on it has been weak to non existent, I'm going to be keeping a tabs on things much much closer with the new client in order to ensure that the same backlog doesn't happen with this one.

So guys, last thing I'm going to tell you is how to get the new client. So make sure to check the link section below!

    stineyn: Odd, if it happens again please let us know.  Filing a ticket on curseforge is the best way.

    sabledrakon: Is it still using up enough resources to be noticable or is it just the boxes?  We are looking at making it configurable but not in time for the next release.

    ReiTung: For it to be identified now it has to have an exact match on our servers.  If the version you're using is edited or was never uploaded to curseforge or wowace then there is nothing we can do to really set it straight.  The new client's matching is much more exact and as a side effect less forgiving.

    hi,

    i get quite some addons installed (e.g. gatherer) listed as "not known addons" once running RC1, although they show up in the "addons" list and are identified correctly by the old 2.0.0.14 client.

    cheerz

    Kael: Confirmed that the error involving 2 different addons installing the same dependancy has been fixed and other than the vexing hourly scan, everything is working just fine with 2.1.1.18. Now are you planning to tone down the scan intervals? At the moment, an hourly scan feels a little heavy handed since most addons aren't even updated weekly. Perhaps changing the update to a daily schedule?

    Well, I killed the client and restarted several times, getting the errors on startup each time, before posting.  Now it's not happening anymore. Don't you just love a mystery.  Thanks for the quick response.

    I installed the client earlier this year and have become a fan.  Keep up the good work!

    Yes, 'C:\Users\Art\AppData\Local\CurseClient\List1.log' exists.  I can open it using notepad.

    Stineyn: can you confirm for me that the files exist on disk?

    The curse client just updated itself to today's update (.18) and now I'm seeing the following error(s) at startup:

    5:41:20 PM: Failed to open 'C:\Users\Art\AppData\Local\CurseClient\List1.log' for reading (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

    5:41:20 PM: Failed to retrieve file times for 'C:\Users\Art\AppData\Local\CurseClient\List1.log' (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

    MontyGommo,

    The issues you reported should be fixed in today's update. This update also significantly increased the speed of the client. It should be a lot snappier now.

    sable: that issue should be fixed with todays update (.18)

    The wow permissions issue should be fixed as well.

    I've managed to trace the problem with several addons appearing to be modified within the Curse Client. Apparently, the two that seem to be doing it the most Gatherer and Auctioneer have the common dependency of !Swatter. It turns out that both of these addons use a slightly different version of Swatter. This variation is causing Curse Client not to recognize one of these two addons as functional. i.e. If you install Gatherer, then Auctioneer, Gatherer will appear to be modified in the client. This probably also affects any other addons that bring !Swatter along for the ride. The only foreseeable workaround is for the authors of any addon that bundles !Swatter to all agree upon a version of the addon to use and stick with it, all upgrading their packages when !Swatter itself is updated.

    So here was an interesting thought. I thought maybe I'll run my WoW and get to the sign in page, then try using my client to install addons. Hmmm, might work, even though I did not have to do that with the last client because it knew where the file was since I directed it there. I figured the same feature would do the same thing. Guess, the same feature in the new client doesn't seem to realize that. So, it worked none the less. Having the sign in page up accessed the folder and the client ran with it to install the addons. Thanks annubiz if that is what you meant by (quote)Instead exit and re-run the application so the user you run wow under will have the right permissions to the addons directory.(/quote)

    Thanks annubiz but the computer did ask for credentials and still no luck.
Been having the same issues as Monty. Although I deleted all my addon files and ran them through the client. Client says they are installed, but after I look for them in the corresponding file they are not there. Hence no addons. I have tried reinstalling, uninstall and install again still same issue. As I watch the bar it downloads addon, but as it extracts the file, the bar goes half way and then closes. This tells me it is not extracting the files fully. I have had this problem with 7 addons.
Most likely you are running as a limited user and upon the first install the program was running as an admin (it did prompt for credentials?)  -- first don't let it run after reinstall!  Instead exit and re-run the application so the user you run wow under will have the right permissions to the addons directory.

    Adamar, i have the utmost confidence that you guys will fix all the issues :)

    It's the reason i'm actually posting any problems i have, i like the potential of the client and what you guys are doing with it.

    This version is infinitely better than the last, especially with the way it displays addons.

    MontyGommo,

    The "appears to be modified" issue is fixed internally, and will go out in Monday's client patch. We still have a few remaining bugs to fix before we consider this a final release.

  • Sun, Feb 15 2009 11:42 AM ()

    I have just decided not to update my other computer with this newer version and keep the manual download/install on the one I am using. Figure I'll give them some time to work out the rest of the bugs.

    I've recently encountered this myself with both Gatherer and Auctioner. Much like them, a reinstall does not solve this issue. The addons reinstall just fine and they work, but after a while, the Client said they've been changed again.

    So now its saying that the version of Gatherer i have 'appears to be modified and no longer matches our database'

    Haven't reinstalled/updated it or anything to my knowledge, i even tried the 'reinstall' option for it, but it didn't fix it.
