Curse

Future Plans for the Curse Client

A few months ago myself and Adamar took over the actual development of the Curse Client. In that time we've taken it a long way, bugs have been squashed, ui's have been polished, and the experience has been streamlined.

However, we are by no means satisfied.

We've listened to the feedback brought to us by our users, we've examined them, and we've studied our options. In the next major release we're going to be doing a lot of things.

Some of these things include:

  • New features, such as UI Synchronization between computers.
  • Cleaner, more intuitive, interfaces.
  • Bugs will be squashed and problem code will be eliminated
  • No more popup progress bars!
  • Enhanced support for firewalls and proxies.

For our Mac users we'll also be bringing:

  • PPC Support
  • 10.4 Support
  • A true, native feeling custom UI.

We are dedicated to the client as one of our most important products and will be investing as much time, energy, and caffeine as is needed to address the needs of our users.

I'll be keeping you guys updated as we progress including screenshots, screencasts, and further announcements.

    I was considering upgrading to a premium client, then you went ahead and broke my wine/curse combo again. If you aren't willing to make a native linux client, could you at least try to see if you can make the client work with wine?

    I find two thing here humorous and sad:

    1: that people think the premium membership is against Blizzard's EULA. The addons are still available, unaltered between the free and regular users. The subscription is for faster DLs, simultaneous DLs, an update all button, and no ads. It's completely legitimate.

    2: Massive QQ about the update-all button being for premium members only. If it's that important to you, get a membership. If nobody's going to pay for it, as some people here are claiming, then... why are you so upset? do you realize how little money we're talking about here? You can't get a Starbucks coffee for $2.50, come on... If it's worth QQing up a storm about, it's worth $2.50 to you. If it's not worth $2.50 to you, it's not worth QQing about.

    Thanks for the feedback guys, some good suggestions have came up here.

    Please keep the comments on this post on topic.  I'm looking for feedback on features and ideas for new features.  Not criticisms (especially non-constructive ones) on Premium vs Non-Premium.

    We've also been in contact with Blizzard, and we've satisfied any concerns they've brought to us about Premium.

    Well seeing as this "premium membership" extortion plan is against Blizzard's EULA I think you can expect their lawyers to contact you soon. Plus the idea sucks completely on your side, I know I for one am uninstalling Curse Client as soon as I get home from work today. Thanks for the nice community site, thanks for buying out the only real alternative that we had besides curse client (well it's actually now just renamed to curse client from what I've seen so far) and I wish you don't fall to hard once the ppl stop using your site because of the greedy premium membership plot that makes no sense at all.

    The Premium membership is garbage....

    I dont' want Beta Keys.. they are useless to me.

    I don't care about a dumb Avatar.. I don't post on the message boards.

    The Arthor support is against Blizzard User agreement....

    So what is the point of going to paid except to get that update all button?????

    I could have sworn that I already left a comment on this post...

    I would think that it's enough to limit free users with capped downloads and forced ads, but I fail to see the logic in also taking away the update-all button.

    Every other subscription-based download site I've seen (ie fileplanet.com, ign.com, etc) is content with charging for increased download speeds and the removal of ads, but why not Curse?  Why do you have to go the extra step and take away a core functionality of what every updater has had to date and all your users expect to be there?  An update-all button is a core functionality of an update program.  I can't remember the last time I had a WoW addon updater that didn't have an update-all button and I've used various applications through the years.

    It just doesn't make sense for Curse to do this, it comes across as petty and just greedy.  No one is going to pay you $2.50/month simply for this feature.  No one.

    I understand that linux users are probably a small percentage, but a native linux client would be a greatly appreciated addition.  Thanks!

    Is anyone else having major issues with the Curse client on their Mac? I am running a 2007 17" MBP, and the client is almost unusable.

    Here is an example (note this happened more than once):

    I was trying to reinstall SexyMap, and decided to try the client. I went to the SexyMap page, and pushed "Download via Curse Client" button. Everything seemed okay... it dowloaded the addon, I could SEE it in my addon folder

    BUT, when I would type in /sm I constantly got the "Type /help for a list of help commands". I tried redoing the update with the client, but no luck. The only way that I was able to get SexyMap working was to manually install it like I would have normally (after deleting the old version of course).

    I can't remember all of the addons that this happened with, but I know SexyMap was one, and so were the SunnViewport Skin Packs. Sunn worked fine, but I could NOT see the skins in-game until I manually installed them.

    Is there something that I am doing wrong? Is there an updated beta? I am at work, so I don't know exactly what version of the Beta I am on.... I will edit later.

    Any help would be GREAT.

    I think auto error reporting would be a great idea. Like if a addon errors, that error message is automatically sent to the author

    I do understand that you have your server costs and people to pay.. but I don't see why I should pay 2,50$ a month for 1 ( ONE ) button namely Update all... I Don't use any other stuff the curse client has to offer and I don't care about advertisement in it as well... but: I am not willing to pay so I can click one more button.. Let regular users use the update all function and premium users all the other stuff.. I don't care.. There are other auto-updating services around.. maybe not as good as this one but still they are there.. and I would rather like to donate something out of free will than being forced to pay a monthly subscription just to be able to use , again, ONE more button.. I don't get it.. really.. but hey it's your decision to scare away people

    For our Mac users we'll also be bringing:

       * PPC Support

       * 10.4 Support

       * A true, native feeling custom UI.

    Some of these things include:

       * New features, such as UI Synchronization between computers.

       * Cleaner, more intuitive, interfaces.

    Sounds very good. The old curse client used to be holy heck bad. This one is just amazing, and it sounds like its getting even better. :)

    @Yinepuhotep

    I haven't had that problem at all. The client opens all of the pages I request in Firefox with no problems.  I don't remember having to configure anything to make it do that, other than set FF as my default browser on my system.

    bluebrutal, that is a personal pet peeve of mine, as you see it all the time in various game patchers.

    The issue is based around (for us as well as said patchers) using an IE control in an app - Microsoft wants you to use IE to open those links.  I don't know anyone at Curse that's particularly fond of IE =P

    Client auto installed 3.0.0.4 and I cant use the client anymore due to it trying to access something protected by DEP, in Vista.
