Curse

Future Plans for the Curse Client

A few months ago myself and Adamar took over the actual development of the Curse Client. In that time we've taken it a long way, bugs have been squashed, ui's have been polished, and the experience has been streamlined.

However, we are by no means satisfied.

We've listened to the feedback brought to us by our users, we've examined them, and we've studied our options. In the next major release we're going to be doing a lot of things.

Some of these things include:

  • New features, such as UI Synchronization between computers.
  • Cleaner, more intuitive, interfaces.
  • Bugs will be squashed and problem code will be eliminated
  • No more popup progress bars!
  • Enhanced support for firewalls and proxies.

For our Mac users we'll also be bringing:

  • PPC Support
  • 10.4 Support
  • A true, native feeling custom UI.

We are dedicated to the client as one of our most important products and will be investing as much time, energy, and caffeine as is needed to address the needs of our users.

I'll be keeping you guys updated as we progress including screenshots, screencasts, and further announcements.

Since the 3.0.0.4 upgrade, my copy of the client locks up once I log in.  :(

    @Yinehotep

    YES!  I agree completely!

I have only used IE when forced to do so for the last 8 years.  I strongly dislike being forced to do so.  Could you Curse guys please, please make the small change of accessing the default browser on a system rather than using Internet Explorer?  You're making all my Firefox addons lonely...

  • Fri, May 1 2009 6:24 PM ()

Would it be too much to ask that the client respect the user's choice of default browser, rather than forcing the use of Internet Exploiter?

Some of us out here choose to use NON-Microsoft browsers for increased security, convenience, or ease of browsing, and resent being forced to use Microsoft's buggy, insecure, bloated piece of crap instead of the browser we have carefully installed and configured our systems to use.

Well, I don't want it to ignore the AddOn. I want it to update it but not use the method it's using now.

If it's just a few AddOns, I suppooooose I could just update those manually.

    Thanks for the tip!

    PerfectH,

You can right click on an addon and select "Toggle Ignore" in order to prevent the client from managing that addon, for the case where you've hand edited something in it.

@CurseUrom: That's pretty much what I said in the last post, but you explained it a little better. ;)

If $2.50 a month is too expensive for you, don't use the service, see if they care. Meanwhile, the rest of us who CAN afford the service and find it use full will be using it.

  • Fri, May 1 2009 12:47 AM ()

Why is everyone surprised? When we registered the account it stated that the auto update service will only be free for a short time until they start the premium service. At least the premium service is voluntary and you can still download add-ons and updates manually for no charge. However, considering the work involved in writing and updating each add-on, the authors deserve to be compensated (on a "voluntary" basis) for making the games much more enjoyable.

Considering that the monthly service fee is no more than the price of a soda at a fast food restaurant (and how many of those do you drink a month?), you guys complaining should be ashamed.

I would also like to add that $2.50 a month is nothing to me. If you can get this program running fantasticly, I'd gladly pay $5.00 a month for it.

If you have a job and you pay to play WoW, I surely think the rest of you can afford $2.50 a month to keep your AddOns working properly without you having to worry about it yourself. If you don't like the idea of paying some one(s) for their hard work on a fantastic program, then don't use the program or don't use AddOns. It's simple as that.

There is one thing I'd really like to see changed that has been occuring lately that I really do not like:

Since I've been using the newest version of Curse Client, it seems to uninstall and reinstall the AddOn (just inside the AddOns folder) that it is updating, which I personally don't like because I have a few AddOns that I've added my own content to and when an update for that AddOn happens, my content gets deleted.

Luckily, I have back-ups of my own content which isn't so bad, but here's a good example of what I am talking about: I have a folder inside the kgPanels AddOn which contains all of my custom artwork. I know that I could move the location, but I think it's fine where it is because it's never gave me a problem until recently.

Please change it or at least make an option to override and replace rather than do a complete, clean install update of the AddOn. I'm sure I'm not the only one who disagrees on the current method being used.

This is sad, really.  $2.50 a month is far from unreasonable considering server costs and convenience.  I will slightly agree that the auto-update feature is kind of a bad choice for "premium", but for a different reason:  it's kind of a nothing service.  What I mean is, it would never be enough to get me to sign up for premium, and it's not much of a selling point, because even without it, your basic client makes managing my add-ons much simpler.

Don't listen to people with an over developed sense of entitlement.  You host, aggregate, and provide a service.  You have server costs, you write software, and you dedicate a large amount of your time to this site.  Asking for a little money to keep things going isn't unreasonable... and you share the money you're bringing in with add-on authors, so you doubly have nothing to be ashamed of.

In fact, since your free, non-premium version is STILL better than anything else out there, you should hold your heads up high and be proud.

@Cushie: I know the curse client devs are trying their hardest to get a mac client working on all platforms.  They all use macs. LOL

  • Thu, Apr 30 2009 6:45 PM ()

im not happy about not being able to use the mass update anymore...but its not like im just gonna drop the client....quit whining, cause its still gonna tell you whenever there are new addons out.

I really don't know what all the fuss is about. I haven't had the privilege to use the Curse client, I am on Mac OS X10.4 PPC, so I have been doing manually installs for the past 2 years. However I am excited and very willing to opt in for the premium if the team gets a PPS 10.4 build going and going strong.

Truthfully all these people people upset have "choices" and that freewill choice of not going premium is God's given gift to us. You are not mandatorily forced or coerced into going premium. It's an option and an option of your own choice....

In short, everyone should be please in the least just that Curse allows for options in the first place.

"However, we are by no means satisfied."

I should say not, since now in addition to subjecting myself to your advertising stream, for which you are paid, you now want me to pay a fee to use something you offered in exchange for the advertising eyeballs yesterday...

    Uninstalled, no questions answered.

Thanks for formerly being good, except when you got a lot of people hacked.

    Peace.

You seriously better reconsider your actions guys - you are about to lose most of your user base.  If you don't act VERY QUICKLY - most of us will uninstall your greedy client.

This was a good program - now it sucks.. honestly, $2.5  a month? Wow itself costs $15 a month, and this basically just updates installations of addons that you didnt author.  It is SAD AND PATHETIC.  You should be ashammed of yourselves. Ashammed.  I really think add-on authors should ban curse from installing their software. I think its a must - because what you are doing is basically unethical in my book - taking money from people  for installing software you didnt author, in a bad economy, etc etc.  Its greedy, and wrong.  Curse was a good site - now all it does it make me want to curse.
