Charging fees for "service" is ok, but when I think I will donate for an addon, I do it directly to the author, not through a programm, where everyone is rewarded (Sorry, some authors I don't want to donate to, some I want.).

Ad-Free? Give me more flashy adds. I'm on the internet since 1995, and I can life with flashy adds and so on, no problem here with that.

Support Curse? Ok, would do it, but in my way with a donation, not with a fee.

Beta keys? Well, the Battlefield Heroes Giveaway is a good example, you get keys everywhere on the net for free, even on the Battlefield site directly, so no real argument. The Premium only keys, well, if tzhere is no beta I can reach I don't mind it, because games with no open beta are not really worth playing it direct on release, and mostly I'm right with my opinion for my flavour of games.

Faster Addon download? An argument, but no real argument, I'm on a 100Mbit cable connection and tell you what? I have time, speed it meaningless for me.

Automatic addon updates? Sorry, did that 1 time, after that I had to download everything manual to get back on working versions, no need for this.

Unique avatars? Common, this is no reason for a fee. Would be like "Get Premium to be allowed to write comments."

These are only my opinions, I think, some may apply to your opinions, some not, like always.

Pointing to the Client wars:

Hm, very interesting point with WoWmatrix and bandwidth, because when I "leech" direct off curse.com or use WoWmatrix, both methods suck the same amount of bandwidth. - So this point is destroyed. WoWmatrix, doing by hand or CurseClient, all 3 methods leech the same amount of bandwidth.

About the ad-revenue, well, this is the most important part today, and I think, yes, it is one of the reason, wowmatrix is under attack, but hell, ever thought about all the Firefox users out there with AdBlock! Plus with Dr. Evils Filterlist? ^^ Those will never see an ad on this site. Think this is bigger loss at all.

For the CurseClient: Well it works, but is not my flavour, I loved the old WoWAce client and some of the WoWAce community developed updaters (There was one similar to wowmatrix, but you had to manage the sites where to get the updates by hand.

The old WoWinterface updater is not perfect but did the job like the new CurseClient.

The be clear, I never used WoWmatix, nor will I, but to stay clear again, I will never pay for something I do not need, I only need one option, and 3$ per month is ok, but not for only multidownload, and such few features, I know better Premium sites for same amount of cash with more and better features.

Just my 2 cents.

PS: Sorry, for my bad Englisch, its not my native language.

Isnt that the same model that carbonite was using....ie...here's a free version...but to get "better" benefits pay for the "premium" version. And carbonite had to stop that.

I am registering a complaint with Blizzard.

From inside my office Alot of complaints are starting to pile up.

How does curse get around the blizzard policy of not charging for addons?? ohhhh....because they are only charging for ACCESS to the addons....not the addons themselves....or i should say...."better access".

Isnt that the same model that carbonite was using....ie...here's a free version...but to get "better" benefits pay for the "premium" version. And carbonite had to stop that.

I am registering a complaint with Blizzard.

It is ridiculous for some websites to band together, complain about a program that does what theirs couldn't do, and then fix their version and offer it for a "small fee" with of course a stripped down version for free. Then to "sell it" they "offer" 20% kickback to addon authors.

If there is any wording in the agreements between addon authors and curse that indicates they must ONLY host their addons on a "curse approved" site, then that constitutes Curse charging for addons because they are deliberately restricting access and fronting themselves as the sole method of access for those addons....even if it is in a "premium" mode.

Carbonite is the example and they had to cease doing it.

Another angle:

Amazing how wowmatrix can offer a 1step update for FREE....but curse has to CHARGE for that very same capability....and the only way that they even get away with it is because they offer kickbacks to the addon authors to ONLY list on their site.

So here is what it looks like to me. Curse and a couple other websites were loosing "valuable" ad revenue because their website hits were going down. One reason for this was because someone built a program that automated what i would end up having to spend alot of time doing manually, and because the program worked better than the curse client. So rather than build a better product and compete with Wowmatrix on a level playing field.....they decided to gang up and badmouth wowmatrix. The lies that have been spread about wowmatrix being behind spreading keyloggers and such are just despicable, especially since curse and other sites have had their fair share of those very same problems.

The "you never know where wowmatrix is getting the addons from"....or the "they make tons of changes not authorized by the addon authors" are proven to be disingenuous because then curse says...."oh we have to block them because they are leeching our bandwidth"....and "they have adds on their website that are stealing our revenue"

I would say......pick one side of the argument and stick with it. If they are "leeching bandwidth".....then anyone who downloads addons is guilty of "leeching bandwidth"....and oh wait....that means that wowmatrix would have to be getting the addons from CURSE to begin with and not modifying them. If people go to another website, because it works better...even if its not as "flashy", that doesnt mean the site is stealing ad revenue.

Bottom line, wowmatrix built a great tool to easily update addons that WORKED, whereas, the curse client sucked and hardly anyone used it.

In the end, it really isnt about the "small fee"....its about the principle of how Curse and some other websites have dealt with this.

Curse has been a great site.....seems they just got a little to big for their britches and don't want to play well with others.....so they are taking their ball and bat and pouting.

Ok, so they added a few features that you now have to pay a really small fee a month. OMG people are paying $5 and up a day or more for cigerettes, and here are complaints that a site is now charging to do certain things. Not to mention that we pay a monthly fee to play WoW, and I've talked to some people that pay for several accounts for themselves. Whats another $3 to make your gaming experience a little better? It is still free, but YOU have to take the time to update them your self, 10 maybe 20 mins? They are just trying to make a few extra bucks to make their site better.
