Diablo III

Diablo as an MMO

With the news of Diablo III being in development, I've been wondering how Diablo would be like if it was turned into an MMO. I have many fond memories from the classic Diablo, it was revolutionary and one of its kind when it came out in 1997. When you think of it, Diablo II came out in 2000, "merely" three years later, that is pretty awe-inspiring for being a Blizzard title. Usually they take quite awhile to release their games. To me, three years is a short development time for being made by Blizzard. Perhaps the development of Diablo II had already initiated before Diablo came out? Either way, this is not the main topic of this article, it's how Diablo would be if it was unleashed as an MMO.

The dark-fantasy theme of Diablo is in my opinion a great environment for an MMO. As for the story, its based on the war between heaven and hell. Something you can expand on pretty much endlessly. There's another game that has the whole theme of "heaven and hell" -- which is Aion. It's far from as dark and grim as Diablo, though.

Having the central starting location for most players to be the town of Tristram that so many players have fond memories would be a great beginning. You can easily expand on that by adding quests and endless of dungeons to explore. It also reminds me a bit of the MMO Mythos. Made by former Diablo developers. There's randomly generated dungeons and many different ways to get items, and you can also do quests.

I think if Blizzard put their resources into developing a Diablo MMO using the very nice 3D engine they showcased with Diablo III and took some of the ideas from Mythos, it would turn out great. Consequently, much lore exists to expand on the Diablo franchise and having a more darker and grim MMO would definitely be a change of pace. Especially, since most MMOs these days are bright and colorful. When I think of the darker colors, Darkshore comes to mind. First time I entered that area after leaving Darnassus, was great. It felt darker and I thought to myself 'wow, Blizzard really know how to get the setting and environment to match'. Sadly, World of Warcraft is overall way too colorful if you compare it to how the general design of Diablo is. Many argue that Diablo III is too colorful as well, but I disagree. The colors used is just fine, and I'd love to see an MMO made out of it.

Wouldn't it be great to adventure into the Catacombs and perhaps even eventually Hell? In addition, having a different gameplay pace, with more action related clicking to kill instead of using ways too many different abilities? Yeah, I believe so too. Mythos has done a decent job at it, but we all know that if Blizzard worked on this (especially with the new engine that showcase Diablo III) it would almost be a game to die for.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you like to see a Diablo MMO or is Diablo III well enough with Battle.net support and extra features for cooperative play that will be released further into the future?

imo, you can't pull as much of the world content type deals out of diablo 3.
Might not necessarily work. I'm content with the way things are going now

This would be awesome, but with so many people sticking to WoW and AoC, I doubt that this would prosper very well, and they would need to either drop WoW or Diablo MMO. If they don't then they would eventually end up like Nexon (if you play Maple Story you know what I mean) and have advertisements for their items EVERYWHERE in there game Wal-Mart signs saying buy StarCraft here! or something along those lines. And eventually they would end up becoming one giant advertisement and players would lose intrest (like I did with MS) and find a better output.

So it's theoretically possible, but I'm hoping they decide against it.

I think that with Diablo III they will seek to expand on the story line and open it up for more of an MMO content worthy game line. the idea of having Diablo MMO would be met with great response and a lot of people would play it. but i think that Blizzard will have to understand and be willing to take the risk of losing a lot of WoW players to Diablo MMO... and for this reason I feel like it will be some time before Blizzard releases another MMO... they have to still milk WoW some more, and then Starcraft, and Diablo...

Blizzard games are just going to have to follow a particular pattern:
    Game I
    Game II
    Game III
    World of Gamecraft

So for Diablo, we're just one step away from World of Diablocraft
Sadly by this line of thinking, we still need to see Starcraft III before we get World of Starcraft ='(

I had thought of this as well. When I'd heard that Blizzard was working on a new MMO, my first thought was "Diablo?" Traditionally fantasy type MMO's are more popular then futuristic/sci-fi ones (from people I've spoken with anyhow, and there are exceptions to the rule). I do love playing WoW, but Diablo would make a much darker, adult oriented MMO

This isn't a topic to argue about! I think better support in an "Only-Online-Game" would be nice.
But how much money do we have to spend this for? Will Blizzard be satisfied with the income from the bought game as itself? I think no and in this case I am for the classic Diablo-Style with battle.net and Single Player! In my opinion one monthly-cost game reachs the limit for me! If Blizzard just expand from Warcraft to Diablo it reaches my Limit and I simply jump off from Blizzard games!

Well, as great as it sounds (MMO) the best part of battle.net is that it's FREE .. once you buy the game you're set. I am a current and long-time WoW player and still, every month, no matter how much fun I've had playing WoW, I still as myself "is it worth it?" ... to be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that I cannot back up my WoW character to save for later, I would quit it for a while. But after putting ALL that time and effort into several characters, losing it because I don't pay for a month is a gut-wrenching thought. Sometime I wish I never would have made the commitment in the first place .. and believe me, I've had THIS discussion many many times with hundreds of others who feel the same way. .. but I digress .. I would still love to see it as an MMO .
An Idea: If Blizzard decides to take another game (DIII) the MMO route, then why not ALL their games ... heck, turn battle.net into an all MMO portal with 1 fee allowing access to any.all games ... kinda like what STEAM offer with their Counter Strike / Half Life online setup. It would probably piss off all the free-playin' current Battle.net people, but it would sure be nice to have a variety of games to play after forking over $13+ every month. ...just an idea.

In my opinion blizzard are not that stupid to create competition for themselves.
Now they have the perfect lineup : PERFECT MMO- WoW
    PERFECT RTS - Starcraft II
    PERFECT RPG - DIABLO III
they dominate in any area of gaming and not creating competition for themselves like this
its really good plan and good way of thinking.
MMO kinda make all of the things sloppy though I love warcraft and I love WoW I don't want to see diablo MMO because it will ruin all the special feeling that diablo ever had- face the evil alone- one hero vs all the evil in world like huge burden and so on blah blah blah

If they kept Diablo the way it is, and just made it more of a persistant server, rather than games, maybe throw in an AH or some other MMO friendly features, but kept it free on bnet, i could see that working great.

if just offer a free version, or an upgraded with mmo perks sub.

I'm concerned about the RPG elements. Blizzard are like "totally dive in and kill stuff! not none o' that character creation." never played Diablo II. was that an RPG?

Oh, man... As one who has done so twice now, let me assure you that you can cancel your payment subscription and pick it up again after any amount of time has passed, and pick up right where you left off. Do yourself a favor and take a break NOW.

If you go into Account Subscription and click Cancel Account for your payment option, it'll beg you to stay, and ask you why you're leaving. (Don't worry, following these steps won't take you to the point where your subscription is actually cancelled) Under "General Reason", select "Payment/Account", and then under "Specific Reason", select "Too expensive", and you'll see the following text:

"We do understand your concern over the cost of the monthly subscription fee for World of Warcraft. If you do enjoy the game but find it to be more than you are willing to pay per month, we do offer special pricing plans that can decrease your payments. More information on how to take advantage of these plans can be found at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/support/ or by contacting billing@blizzard.com If you find that these pricing plans are still more than you want to spend at this time, but want to come back at a later date, please note that Blizzard Entertainment will still keep your characters on file until you wish to return."

You can quit WoW. They hold your character until the day WoW is done and Blizzard pulls it (haha). Someone who played to level 12 when WoW first came out and quit the first month could come back and they would still have that character. Your characters will never get deleted. I quit for a year plus and still have all my characters.

Diablo III as an MMO would be a great idea. The whole storyline behind both the previous games allows for a wealth of ideas and quests. Though "going into Hell" to fight a bad guy would be unlikely, seeing "demon bosses" from the Diablo game series would be ideal. The character development is already there, all Blizzard would have to do is touch up the "talent" build system and the game would fly. I honestly dont believe that anyone from WoW would quit it for Diablo III, and all Blizzard would have to do is offer a pass (like Sony's Station Pass) which would allow people to play both games for only a nominal increase in the monthly fees. But unfortunately I doubt Blizzard would make Diablo III an MMO, they dont have the guts. They had the perfect opportunity with Starcraft (which would have dominated the future/sci-fi MMO market) but they didnt, deciding to keep it an RTS. But, all in all, a Diablo MMO would have made a terrific MMO. We all get tired of WoW at one point and decide to take a break (I play AoC), Diablo III MMO would have allowed Blizzard to keep a fan base even when ppl needed a break from WoW.

've always liked the idea too, but i think it would be kinda hard to pull off for one reason. i come from a background where most of my friends are die hard PVPers and they wont touch an MMO unless it has a hefty pvp system. i see that being problematic outside duels. there's enough lore that something might be able to twisted around and used.

i also like the idea of a starcraft mmo. we need more genres instead of straight up fantasy.

ps. for saying the aion has anything to do with heaven and hell or angels vs demons will get you verbally assaulted over at the aionsource forums, even tho the original concept years ago was much closer to heaven vs. hell ;)

I think diablo III as an mmo would probably be one of the worst things blizz could do. They already have one; and everything is mmo now. Why can't people still play solid titles like diablo without worrying about the usual drivel that surrounds most mmo communities. I'd much rather blizz stuck with something like battlenet for it and left it single player.

    Hi,

As much as I agree with you, there is one thing that Diablo fans would want and that is the continued support of Free playing environment via Battle.net. Majority of us enjoy WoW and do not mind paying for the MMO environment that WoW gives us but with other MMOs coming out, we need to decide which games we will play on a regularly basis, since monthly fees do add up (3 games is $45 per month). I for one will play a game for 30 day during the free online service and then drop it, if it not a great improvement on WoW in terms of enjoyable game play.

Age of Conan was dropped due to the above reason, since ther is not much content at moment and my attention is now on WARHAMMER. since this is going to have massive amount of content from day one and actually addresses a number of issues that makes WOW a pain to play at times. Specifically the recipe/skill grinding and killing mobs to complete quests, which add no value to the quest/game.

Diablo is great game for single player and should remain so and not placed in MMO environment unless it is geared to both the single and multiplayer and meet its loyal fan base core requirements in terms of free access. which i found will be hard to do in gaming environment.
