Diablo as an MMO

With the news of Diablo III being in development, I've been wondering how Diablo would be like if it was turned into an MMO. I have many fond memories from the classic Diablo, it was revolutionary and one of its kind when it came out in 1997. When you think of it, Diablo II came out in 2000, "merely" three years later, that is pretty awe-inspiring for being a Blizzard title. Usually they take quite awhile to release their games. To me, three years is a short development time for being made by Blizzard. Perhaps the development of Diablo II had already initiated before Diablo came out? Either way, this is not the main topic of this article, it's how Diablo would be if it was unleashed as an MMO.

The dark-fantasy theme of Diablo is in my opinion a great environment for an MMO. As for the story, its based on the war between heaven and hell. Something you can expand on pretty much endlessly. There's another game that has the whole theme of "heaven and hell" -- which is Aion. It's far from as dark and grim as Diablo, though.

Having the central starting location for most players to be the town of Tristram that so many players have fond memories would be a great beginning. You can easily expand on that by adding quests and endless of dungeons to explore. It also reminds me a bit of the MMO Mythos. Made by former Diablo developers. There's randomly generated dungeons and many different ways to get items, and you can also do quests.

I think if Blizzard put their resources into developing a Diablo MMO using the very nice 3D engine they showcased with Diablo III and took some of the ideas from Mythos, it would turn out great. Consequently, much lore exists to expand on the Diablo franchise and having a more darker and grim MMO would definitely be a change of pace. Especially, since most MMOs these days are bright and colorful. When I think of the darker colors, Darkshore comes to mind. First time I entered that area after leaving Darnassus, was great. It felt darker and I thought to myself 'wow, Blizzard really know how to get the setting and environment to match'. Sadly, World of Warcraft is overall way too colorful if you compare it to how the general design of Diablo is. Many argue that Diablo III is too colorful as well, but I disagree. The colors used is just fine, and I'd love to see an MMO made out of it.

Wouldn't it be great to adventure into the Catacombs and perhaps even eventually Hell? In addition, having a different gameplay pace, with more action related clicking to kill instead of using ways too many different abilities? Yeah, I believe so too. Mythos has done a decent job at it, but we all know that if Blizzard worked on this (especially with the new engine that showcase Diablo III) it would almost be a game to die for.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you like to see a Diablo MMO or is Diablo III well enough with Battle.net support and extra features for cooperative play that will be released further into the future?

    I'm totally against D3 becoming an MMO, I think it would deface a huge charm that bnet had, as well as creating runs for certain missions like baal runs used to be and all kinds of different things. If they made it MMO they'd have to create a shared stash or a bank like in wow, something I kinda think they should'a done in the first place. It just sounds sooo unlike the diablo series, as well they've already announced it'll be on bnet and have single player, so thank God that's resolved.

    AOC blows, D3 as an MMO would be moronic, a bad move for blizzard financially and bad for the franchise, the game is made to be played with a simple click of the mouse the POINT of the game isnt based upon heavy strategy like wow, or RTS like starcraft and warcraft.

    Think of it this way Starcraft1 &2/ Warcraft1-3 are all RTS's that in itself is its own franchise RTS games. Starcraft =seriouse RTS (with a much better story IMO) , Warcraft=goofy RTS

    WOW is blizzes ONLY MMO and in its own franchise to make another At this very moment would be REDUNDANT hopefully they come up with a completely new system and once again pioneer the MMO industry.

    Diablo is their simplest game to play they don't want to complicate it and make it harder to learn. Think of it as an introduction into the blizzard family. its in a class of its own. It brings back the classic lore of old. Tales of demons and satin and all the bad terrible things that are present in the would fighting against all the good on the planet. This game is not only blizzards story, but a story that's been passed down through legend over and over and over again. my point. Keep it simple, keep it fun, and relive the tails of heros.

    and bliz BETTER NOT make another mmo thats even SIMILAR to wow that would be pointless.

    uh. diablo 2 was an mmo, and this looks to be along the same lines as diablo 2, so therefore it's an mmo as well. everybody here has such a strict cookie-cutter idea of what an mmo is supposed to be but they ignore what the acronym actually stands for. massively multiplayer online. diablo 2 was online, it was multiplayer, and it was pretty massive (both in the number of people playing and the size of the environment, for its time). just because the game was instanced and limited to smaller groups of people, doesn't mean it WASN'T an mmo. guild wars is heavily instanced and it's considered an mmo. stop thinking that the wow platform is the only way to organize an online game and broaden your ideas.

    You wanna make a mmorpg like world of warcraft type out of the francises make it outta starcraft would be sick, tons of classes battle based questing independent many planets to go to battles for like neutral planets with pvp also have space battles and buildable guild spaceships and stuff i think it be cool. Diablo mmorpg like world of warcraft in the end would be an insult really just because you in diablo are one character already u get gear you have stats and you pick talents so people would feel like it was just an open exsplore version of diablo and it would get boring real quick i think if you wanna start an mmorpg build it off a franchise that was never originally designed for that setting makes it more interesting. thats why i think if they built it off of the other RTS game starcraft like they did with the old rts warcraft 3 then i think people will get into it quicker and be more into it. Just be how id feel about it.

    By definition, it wasn't an MMO. It was a single player RPG with limited multiplayer support. That isn't an MMO.

    Diablo 2 wasn't Massively Multiplayer (as up to 8 players is hardly massive). Add to that the Diablo 3 is supporting 8 players but having content designed with 4-5 players in mind, and you can clearly see that there is nothing massive about Diablo 2 or 3. MMOs generally have servers holding thousands of players in a persistent environment. Diablo 2 didn't house thousands of people in a persistent environment. Not even Blizzard, the creators and managers of the titles refer to either of them as MMOs ;o

    It also isn't the "WoW platform." It is an accepted genre of games that pre-dates WoW. Games like Ultima Online and EverQuest were MMOs long before WoW was conceived. Sadly, there is a generally accepted definition of MMOs going around that defines them as: video games which are capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world.

    anyway so old blizzard developers left blizzard way back when ... they were part of the the original diablo design team ... they made a project called hellgate london... an mmo .. for those who have tried it you cant tell me its not based on diablo

    What defines a game as a MMO?

    The ability to play and adventure with others.

    Hence, Battlenet.

    I have to agree with the starcraft comments. I enjoy wow, and enjoy diablo. However, even though there would be different themes, it would still be another fantasy based mmo, too similar to wow. I'm ready to finally see a sci-fi/futuristic mmo that actually gets the job done. If blizz plans on having this whole separate team work on the next gen mmo, which it looks like they do, then there is no reason they can't continue wow to satisfy fantasy fans out there, and still make world of starcraft.

    I just feel like diablo as an mmo would be too similar to wow in terms of how it would play.

    Using number of friends that are hardcore PvP players to say that this would not work, tells me you have HUGE number of friends that could affect the outcome of Dibalo MMO has a new game and hurt blizzard's sales or you have not thought your comments through.

    Even if you had 10,000 friends that would be about 0.1% of the total player base Blizzard has now with WoW, so I think Blizzard would not need your friends money to make Dibalo MMO successful..:-)

    Battle.Net is not true MMO environment, since it can not handle the population interaction that WoW has in terms of MMO requirements.

    Even Blizzard will not call it MMO game!
