Diablo III

Diablo III Will Not Be Any Darker

When Diablo III was announced, many fans reacted on the difference in art style direction. While the previous two titles in the series has been dark and gothic inspired, the screenshots of Diablo III shows a very colorful and more "normal" fantasy world.

A list where people show how unhappy they are about Diablo III's art direction was made, where they've managed to collect over 52 000 signatures with the purpose to change Blizzard's mind, but now it seems like it was done in vain. In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, the developer Jay Wilson reveals that it's too late to make any changes to the new style. Not to mention they don’t want to change it.

We’re very happy with how the art style is. The art team’s happy. The company’s happy. We really like this art style, and we’re not changing it.

According to Wilson the earlier concept images of Diablo III use to be darker and more inline with the old style, but it didn't work very well with the games third person view he said.

When you have 30 creatures on screen — and four or five different types — target prioritization is a factor,” he said. “You need to be able to tell those things apart fast, and you can’t do that when your world is gray and your creatures are gray.

So, I suppose those 52 000 people who signed that petition will be switching back to their monochrome television sets? God forbid Blizzard make their games look better! *gasp*

    Get a life, folks.

I totally agree with Nik. I loved the first 2 games and had given up hope that they would make a third, but if the color choices help to make it easier to play the game and more enjoyable then who cares if the colors are black and white or pink and purple. Bottom line I've been dying to play a new Diablo game for a long time and color choices are NOT going to keep me from preordering this game! The just better make it worth our wait.

A majority of the color pallate was white, black, or grey for D2. Dont get me wrong, D2 was an awesome game, but the graphics are now *beyond old , bordering on ancient. They are bringing the Diablo franchise into this decade. If you dont wanna play it because it looks good? fine more bandwidth for me :p

I'm happy that they wont consider changing it. We're no longer living in the 90's folks ;)

I liked the other two Diablo games and no change in color gonna stop me from buying new game.
Not to mention i like the new color schemes more anyways.

If you want more grey and dark, go into your video preferences and turn down the gamma and saturation. Problem solved.

if people want a grey scale, they can put their monitor in 256 black/white... or reduce the gama...
People ot powerfull computer, let's use that for some color and cool effect :)

I think everyone needs to stop whining about the new colors. Seriously take Flisher's and Plane's advice and stop whining about it. Besides, more color just means that it's going to look incredible. And just because it's colorful doesn't mean that it isn't going to scare the living **** out of you. They more than likely have an awesome sounds team working on sounds that'll make you walk into a bright room and think omg what the hell is going to jump out at me!!! The sounds are just as important, if not more important, in the color scheme, to a good horror game, or movie for that matter. I, for one, am going to buy the game. I don't care if the background it rainbows, I'm sure theres a way that they could scare the **** out of me with that too.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You are the proud owner of the stupidest post in this thread. You and the 52, 000 people who signed that petition should do the world a favor and headbutt a landmine or something.

    asshat!

I think Jay Wilson is a plank for the statement he makes here.

What sort of a comment is, "You need to be able to tell those things apart fast, and you cant do that when your world is gray and your creatures are gray."? I must be missing a beat here or something. I mean, Diablo 1 = lots of dark monsters on a dark background and Diablo 2 = lots of dark monsters on a dark background. Am I right in think that he is saying Diablo 3 = lots of light, comical monsters on a light, comical background because lots of dark monsters on a dark background does not work? I'm sorry, but that comment is fundamentally flawed.

This also has nothing what-so-ever to do with graphics and/or cool effects. You can accomplish both to a high degree whilst still maintaining a gothic feel to the game. If you think cool effects and hot graphics = comical models and simple coloured textures, you'd be very wrong. Jay should simply turn round and say what he means and that is, "I don't want to bother." That is where the buck stops. The Starcraft 2 team turned round and said, "you know what? We were wrong and we are going to go back and change these things that you guys have pointed out." The Diablo 3 team have gone "*finger* Screw you".

It's not that I disagree with the direction the art team want to take the game because I don't. I think the Diablo franchise needs to change if it is to survive. Frankly, I don't like Jay Wilson. What I disagree with is the comments this guy makes. He's making typically stupid development excuses.

  • Mon, Aug 4 2008 3:46 PM ()

Why do you have to reduce this to insulting the guy and 52,000 other people? That's not cool ;-)

I agree with indelible, EXCEPT: It just doesn't make sense to make such a dark, gothic game into just another 'Point-n-Click'. Art style is one of Blizzards upper hand, if they don't stay consistent with the previously SUCCESSFUL Diablo series, bad stuff is going to happen.

    AKA

I won't be buying this game because it's 'New and innovational', I'll buy it because "It's friggin DIABLO 3"! If they don't keep that consistency intact, they'll have lost another fan. I won't stand for utter crap, which is what D3 is going to be if they can't keep it up to par with D and D2.

I have the feeling here is kind of confusion about the "color" problem.
When some ppl are saying there is too much color is not that they want a monochrome game, is about keeping a dark atmosphere that is like a "brand asset" for the Diablo series.

If you are looking around at the movies what you can call "dark"gothic"mystical" where is about fighting demons, undead, and the "cold" evil, etc" like Underworld, Dark City, even Matrix series, they have a slightly reduced color scheme, and that is what in meter of graphic add to the typical dark atmosphere ...

Many people are afraid Diablo not to become a cartoon like WoW, but Warcraft lore was always comic style, when Diablo lore was always DARK, then keep'it dark! As Diablo had insane success like it was, will have again success as a dark game.

To give an example again from a movie: The mines of Moria in Lord o t Rings ! ( thats Diablo )

Diablo fans doesn't want a "Outland" failure with Diablo III

I'm gfx artist, played all major Blizzard games D, DHell, D2 (alot), Starcraft, Warcraft I, II. III, actually playing WoW, and as all Diablo fans I have great expectations about D3!
