Shane Kim on "Microsoft's MMO Difficulties"

The current Microsoft Game Studios Corporate Vice President, Shane Kim tell Edge in an interview why there's been zero MMOs on the Xbox so far.

Two anticipated titles have been canceled, Marvel Universe Online and True Fantasy Live Online. This is not stopping other companies, such as Sony however. Currently Sony is aiming to get DC Universe Online and The Agency finished and released on their Playstation 3.

So… why can't Microsoft keep up with the competition MMO-wise? Shane Kim explains (by being brutally honest):

"I'll admit [Microsoft Game Studios] has not had success in the MMO space, and that happened under my leadership, so I take full responsibility," – he said to Edge.

He also mentions that it’s a lot more expensive to develop an MMO and you must find the "right mix" – something that Microsoft hasn’t found yet.

Actually, Asheron's Call was ran under Micro$oft's tutelage for a while, unfortunately for Asheron's Call, Micro$oft chose not to really push it or do any advertising. In it's time, the only competition was EverQuest. So having the golden key (1 of 3 mmo's at the release) for games, rather then pushing for more sales, they simply accepted the money for the game and let it die. When it finally died to under 5,000 players, they sold it back to the developing company - Turbine Entertainment.

The game itself looks like an MMO from the 90's (which it was), but it's still got one of the strongest PvP systems of all the games out there. If you ask any long time MMO player, 90% will have fond memories of Asheron's Call.

What this all means, is that game companies who might be considering development for the XBox, must in turn look to see what Micro$oft's past with MMO's has been.
