MMO Companies Form Alliance Against Piracy

This news thanks to Gamasutra is a good start toward getting rid of video game piracy in China.

CDC Games - a Chinese online game developer has formed an alliance with CCP Games, Ons On Soft, Sonokong, T3 Entertainment and Wemade - called the Online Game Alliance Against Piracy (OGAAP).

Gamasutra wrote:

The goals of OGAAP are to establish a platform for industry participants and stakeholders to exchange ideas and share experiences; conduct market and technology research; propose industry-wide policies and practices; and lobby relevant government bodies and lawmakers to enact anti-piracy legislation.

The only thing I can think of here is.... why hasn't this been done yet to combat the RMT (Real Money Trading) market that has plagued online games since the turn of the millenium? Is it really something companies want to continue fighting on their own?

The reason is, real money trading doesn't hurt the games, or the companies involved.. UNTIL/UNLESS the tax collectors come and make them report in game holdings as income etc..

Fact #1 the only reason any company talks about being "against" account/item/cash trading within games .. is because they dont want to police it themselves.. IE they dont want to be the middle man between customer/customer disputes.. and as such they simply say "we don't allow it and thus the buyer must beware"

If blizzard had ANY idea that they felt real money trading was bad, that recent account sale would have been banned and it would have been put out in a press release to every corner of the web.. they also would have permabanned the original owner via address/credit card info from ever playing wow again..

The only thing that most of these companies care about is (in wow's case) the in game harassment/spams and actual hacking/cheaing with regards to making money/etc.
