Seriously, thats the exact reason i play a female avatar, and they also normally have much more unique fighting animations then the males do.

Ridiculous. Cross-dressing and playing another gender as a character in a game (i.e., avatar or not) have nothing to do with one-another.

For instance, my first character, a holy paladin, was a human female. Why? Because to me, a woman taking care of you is a lot more interesting than a guy! ;)

Now, my second character, an undead warrior, is female. Why? Because she makes flips whenever she uses certain skills. It's awesome!

What gender some people pretend to be on the internet, has nothing to do with what gender you choose to pick when you start a character. Assuming a female avatar is played by a female person (or a male avatar by a male person, apparently), is quite assumptuous indeed.

Cross-dressing... LOL. You are bad.

Imo it's very good that the gender of the character is very unreliable method of knowing one's true gender. This promotes gender equality, because you can't really assume much anything about other persons gender, so you treat everyone the same. (Though, my personal approach is "Male until proven otherwise").

I would also be quite interested in a study about the reasons for selecting gender. I think people put way too much thought into this issue and when choosing the gender for the character, MMORPG really is just a game.

Yeah..
I agree.
The girls have the better animations like the Undead doing the jump.
I personally like the girls becauase they feel easier to control than the guys ( just my opinion)
I like small and skinny not big and muscler (which makes no difference in the end)

I dont know Seems weird that Chicks think they can get it better a s a dude...but lol as a chick ull earn alot more money and..gain more XP in instances Quest help...just by saying some slezzy crap...i think chicks r the dominators of the game not males...=P

hmmm... so far i have meet around 10 femals chars, that i know are girls IRL... and i have played MMO for around... 2 years. ofc. not asking every person that i talk to... just learned it from when i ask them after a long chat...

I dunno, I think a lot of those guys who have Female Avatars probably also have a (or possibly more) Male Avatars as well. For me it comes down to characterization, some characters that come into my head are women, some are girls, some are men, some are boys, some are space aliens, and some are cattle.

Case in point. Female Night Elf Hunter, rolled at release because I thought Night Elves would make good hunters and my time playing WC3 informed me as to which gender I would use.

I must say I agree with you there =P

But the main reason why I chose female for my Nelf druid is that IMO the male Night-Elves look pretty chubby and "square", while the female avatars are more elegant and well, I shouldn't lie, they look pretty nice ;)

I'm NOT a "cross-dresser" IRL though, but WoW isn't real, it's a game, and an imaginary world made for us to drift away into dreams and fantasy...

Kinda strange, but I think there is no cross-dressing involved. That and gaming characters are two different things. I'm a female, I have about 7 or so characters in WoW, and all but 1 are female. I felt like playing a big male, so I made one. I have a friend who introduced me to the game, and she plays female as well (I don't know all her toons, of course). RPing is just that, RPing.

As a gay man i always fine the str8 men being women hilarious as i never play anything but male chars
the reason they give: "i dont want to look at a dude's butt all the time" sorry but if your spending a significant amount of time looking at a cartoon thay way then you already have issues.
