Frogster has announced a recent partnership with Target to put Runes of Magic playing cards in  more than 1,700 stores! The availability of Runes of Magic diamonds at many Target outlets should allow players to quickly and easily purchase upgrades and special items in the game without needing a credit card or using an online payment processor!

Here's the official announcement from RunesofMagic.com:

SAN FRANCISCO, October 12, 2009 - Frogster America, Inc. today announced that Runes of Magic pre-paid game cards will soon be available at Target stores nationwide. The cards will provide instant access to in-game credits in Runes of Magic, and offer players the opportunity to purchase in-game credits where they shop the most. With more than 1,700 stores in 49 states, players of Runes of Magic will have more options to pay for items that enhance the game. The game cards started shipping to Target stores on October 1st.

“Having our Runes of Magic pre-paid game cards available at Target is a major opportunity for Frogster and our dedicated players who have been asking for a way to quickly buy items in game,” said Lars Koschin, CEO of Frogster America, Inc. “Now they can go to any Target store and be able to spend diamonds the same day. Best of all, there’s also an exclusive mount which is only available to game card buyers.”

Runes of Magic Game Cards come in $20 increments and can be used in the game’s diamond shop to purchase mounts or in-game enhancements. The Target Game Card joins the recently announced Zeevex card program which will make Runes of Magic’s in-game currency available at 7-Eleven stores. Frogster continues to look for additional ways to support the community with alternative payment methods, survey credits and other opportunities that open up the game’s paid enhancements to the free user base.

Runes of Magic Announces Aotulia Volcano Area!

Runes of Magic has announced a new zone; the Aotulia Volcano where the Malevolent Naga has been exiled for centuries! This new landscape was carved by flowing lava and the affects of the Naga can be felt in almost every corner of Aotulia!

Here's a look at the official announcement about the new Aotulia Volcan in Runes of Magic:

The contrast could not be more stunning. When the small group of adventurers — anxious to take the fight against the Naga to the Naga homeland — left the luscious and bountiful Savage Lands, they were confronted with a world of death.

Wherever they looked, there was not even a sign of the smallest patch of grass — even the desolated Dustdevil Canyon held more life than these lands.

But there was a reason for the sweltering heat. Under the command of the relentless Naga, gigantic war machines dug through the rugged earth. Fissures covered the ground. The air had a strong smell of sulfur. And in the distance, a gigantic volcano rose toward the sky, its glittering veins of fiery death stretching every direction.

Streams of lava — partly solidified, partly flowing as if alive — carved paths throughout the land.

Fire ruled here alongside the ever-exploiting Naga.

And of the small group of adventurers that made it to the Naga homeland, only a young Scout returned to report what was seen of the Naga and the terror in their homeland.

Things are heating up in Taborea: Aotulia Volcano is about to erupt. The new Runes of Magic zone is where the the malevolent Naga has been exiled for centuries. The next content update will open the gates to this new region, which is characterized by boiling lava flows.

Aotulia Volcano is where the snake-like beings were banished following their defeat in the war against the alliance of the elves and humans. Separated from the rest of Taborea by a magical wall, they've waited years for the opportunity to escape. After the barrier fell, the Naga conquered northwestern Taborea. And now, adventurers will finally have the chance to take the fight into the heart of the Naga invasion.

Once you leave the Savage Lands and are under the ashen skies of Aotulia Volcano, take your final steps on the way to the level 55 cap. Numerous quests will unravel the history of the desolate zone around the volcano. A gigantic city at the foot of the volcano and new dungeons await exploration.

Aotulia Volcano (check out our content page) will be open at the end of September, when the new content update is expected to be uploaded to the servers. For a glimpse of this new hot zone, check out the new in-game video in the video section.

Runes of Magic Announces New Goblin Minigame!

Posted Jul 24, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic has announced a new minigame that allows the player to become a goblin! To start the minigame players have to dress appropriately, rusted torn up armor is all the rave these days you know, and head down to the goblin mine. The goblins are looking for a champion, and if you're able to step up to the challenge you'll earn yourself access to the goblin treasure!

There's also a new video for the goblin minigame located at: http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/videos,id91,goblin_mine.html

Here's a little lore and more information about the new Runes of Magic minigame:

    Aslan Valley, High Noon

A man stood by the side of the road that meanders through the deep forests of Aslan. But this man was quite unusual. In fact, he did not look human at all.

"What is ye looking at?" he snapped at the passing adventurer.

"I am terribly sorry," the adventurer said. "But I noticed your clothes are a bit strange ... and ... excuse me for being rude, but you smell a bit ..."

"... perf'ly normal far a goblin," the creature rumbled, a mean grin spreading across his face.

The adventurer jumped hurriedly back and reached for his sword.

"Calm down, oi did nae mean to do ye any harm! Oi even got something fer ye," the goblin said, his grin growing even wider.

"Ye know, us goblins ha'e an old tradition," he said. "There's this game we play. Ye know, te find out who's the strongest of us goblins."

"And ... what does that have to do with me?" the adventurer asked, his grip tightening on the handle of his sword.

"Ach, that's easy! Ye just gi' me some wager an' ye can join the brawl. Should ye win, ye might get a title o' honor an' who knows, maybe e'en mo."

After a few moments pondering the offer, curiosity got the better of the brave adventurer, and he shook hands with the goblin. Following the goblin's instructions, the adventurer found himself in one of the many goblin caves, ready to face the challenge and win the title ...

... if only the stupid goblin outfit wasn't so uncomfortable.

The newest Runes of Magic minigame takes you into the exciting world of the green-skinned creatures you've only known as enemies — but no longer! Clothe yourself in goblin attire and face them in their dungeon.

Take part in a challenge that requires more than fancy dress! Only the bravest and wildest adventurers have a chance at winning the title of "Goblin Hero."

You also will get the chance to carry home the goblin treasure! Isn't that reason enough to put on the goblin outfit and dive into the fray?

    Good luck!

Runes of Magic New World Map Released!

Posted Jul 17, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic has released the new world map for The Elven Prophecy expansion expected later this year! In only a few short weeks players will be given a glimpse of what this expansion has to offer as they're allowed to play in the Weeping Coast!

Here's a look at the official release announcement for the new world map for The Elven Prophecy:

There are only a few weeks left before the release of the Weeping Coast, the first new zone in and a preview of “Chapter II: The Elven Prophecy.”

The best captains of the Taborean fleet helped bring to light the dark and unexplored regions of the Taborea. The new world map offers a glimpse at what heroes will be able to explore.

The first territory through which players will travel is the Weeping Coast in the northeast region of Taborea. The Savage Lands territory lies farther to the west. The region is surrounded by a vast rain forest, which is home to the elves. Their settlements can be found at a dizzying height in the tops of the huge trees.

But the naga, enemies of the elves, have established themselves in several small supply posts in the Savage Lands, where they plan their attacks on the elves.

It’s hot in the northwest region of Taborea. The Aotulia Volcano heats the region after which it is named, and an ash-laden sky awaits those who venture into the shadows of the mountain, which has been continuously spewing fire and lava for 150 years. According to ancient lore, the volcano is also known as “Claw of the Demon Dragon,” hinting at a well-protected secret lying deep within its depths.

A more peaceful region is Elven Island, which is far off the east coast of Taborea. The island is a place of learning for young elves. It is where they refine their combat skills and master diplomacy with humans on the mainland. You will be able to play as an elf and will start on the island, allowing you to learn all you can to be a better hero.
Prepare to discover new secrets in new zones with “Chapter II: The Elven Prophecy.”

Runes of Magic Latest Updates and the Weeping Coast

    Filed in Runes of Magic

The latest updates from Runes of Magic include a 50% off Marking Ink Announcement, news about Server Maintenance and Patch details, and a new Summer Shopping Fun 30% off campaign! This week we also saw the release of some news about the Weeping Coast. It looks like before the Elven Prophecy Expansion is fully enacted players will be able to play and visit the Weeping Coast! This area will be playable before the actual expansion hits, allow for level 52 characters, and introduce over 200 new quests to the game! A new trailer has been added to the video section of Runes of Magic and offers a glimpse at the new territory.

Here's more on the Weeping Coast from Runes of Magic:

    *slap*

"Stupid insects," the aging warrior growled, fighting his way through swampy puddles and flailing his arms to repel mosquitoes. His helmet's visor wasn’t helping.
"You should have listened to me," the mage said. "This potion of mine might not smell too nice, but it would have solved that problem for you."
The mage, who hovered millimeters above the slimy surface of the swamp, rolled up the sleeves of her robe and said with a smirk, "As you can see: not a single sting."
"Oh, do shut up!” cried the warrior. “Watch where you’re going, lest you tumble and land head first in this slurry."
But the mage grinned wider and giggled.
Exploring the newly discovered lands northeast of Ravenfell, the warrior and the mage saw exotic plants as high as mountains and marshes full of insects lusting for
the blood of wary travelers. And now they were stranded in this bog having been chased halfway through it by Tiktaalik, fearsome creatures that are half fish and half man.
Adventurers who had explored these lands before them had said something about a human settlement, which was where they were heading. The warrior and the mage

didn’t think it could be much farther — just behind those trees over there.

Maybe the humans in the settlement had a quest or two that would pay well. Maybe they knew more about the Trolls and the Naga and the other foul creatures roaming
these lands. Whatever the case, the warrior and the mage were about to find out.

    Welcome to the Weeping Coast!

Before releasing “Chapter Two: The Elven Prophecy,” we’re making available a new zone: the Weeping Coast.

The swampy land with its branching channels lies northeast of Ravenfell, and dangerous creatures such as the Tiktaalik, Nagas and Trolls threaten passersby. With the introduction of the Weeping Coast, we will raise the level limit to 52 and introduce 200 new quests.

Scheduled for August, the release of the Weeping Coast will mark the beginning of the multistage launch of “The Elven Prophecy.”

A new trailer has been added to our video section and offers a glimpse at the new territory.

    Runes of Magic E3 Round-Up!

Runes of Magic did very well this year at E3 while showcasing the game and some of the upcoming highlights of the Elven Prophecy Expansion due later this year! The game received all kinds of media highlights and have compiled the information in an easy to follow guide for what each media outlet had to say. One of the best is the set of 2 Walkthroughs from Gametrailers that highlight some of the new features in the game, you can view those here:

    E3 09: Developer Walkthrough Part I
E3 09: Developer Walkthrough Part II

Here's the official Runes of Magic E3 Round-Up news:

Last week Los Angeles was host to the world's most important gaming show again. Right in the middle of all the excitement Frogster presented the up- and coming Runes of Magic features and content to the international press.

During the show we announced Runes of Magic's "Chapter 2: The Elven Prophecy" and allowed the press a glimpse at the new content we are planning for the next updates.

And here's the first overview on what the press had to say:

    Gamebunny

"The game definitely seems a worthy option for those looking for a fantasy MMO without a monthly fee. A big expansion is set to be announced tomorrow, so, I guess you heard it here first!? More RoM news? A new, upcoming instance dungeon called “Heart of the Ocean” takes place entirely underwater. Glub glub!"

They posted a few photos from our booth in their Pictures from the E3 gallery and mentioned us in their E3 Day Two Impressions.

    Massively
Massively sent Runes of Magic fan Krystalle Voecks to take a glimpse at all the new content we had to show. She summarized her findings in an article titled E3 2009: A taste of what's to come in Runes of Magic.

She added quite a few of her screen-photos of the presentation to the gallery.

    Gamespot
Gamespot's Andrew Park managed to make some time in his busy schedule and dropped by for a quick view on Runes of Magic - he posted his findings in his Profile-article "Runes of Magic Impressions - What There Is to Do, What's New".

    Gametrailers
Living live through a lens, the Gametrailers staff checked out our booth on Thursday and got the walkthrough - with live commentary from your truely. (And I do apologise for m... m... my stage-fright - that happens when people stick a camera or microphone in my face. :) )

    E3 09: Developer Walkthrough Part I
E3 09: Developer Walkthrough Part II

Of course we had more visitors last week, so keep an eye on our site to learn what the rest of the press had to say.

Time did not stand still while we were away and so we have a few more things that we did or found on the web last week. Hope you'll like it.

Zam.com - Interview with Community Manager Kerensky
A few weeks ago a good friend of mine, Sam "azerian" Maxted got in touch with us and asked if he could send us a few questions for an interview. His questions and my answers can be found under the headline Runes of Magic: Two Months On.

    TenTonHammer
Let's just quote our friends at TenTonHammer: "When gamers first discovered Frogster’s Runes of Magic, it was too easy to dismiss the title as “another [...] clone.” Once beta began and people got a taste of the many features and design elements present in the world of Taborea, players understood that Frogster was on to something with its free-to-play title. As the game closes in on three months since the official launch and over one million registered users, Ten Ton Hammer takes a look at the top six reasons to play Runes of Magic."

    MMORPG.com
And last but not least we have started a new series of Dev-Blogs on MMORPG.com. Starting the series is our very own Director of Product Management Daniel "Danatross" Ullrich. He talks about New Content and the change to the patch cycle. Watch out for more from our people in the coming weeks.

Runes of Magic Announces New Lands, Pet Combat, New Classes and More!

Posted Jun 06, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic has released new details on on a massive expansion to the game dubbed The Elven Prophecy! This expansion will be free and feature two new character classes, a new pet combat system, an improved graphics engine, the ability to advance to level 55, and massive new lands to explore. For more information on the Elven Prophecy visit RunesofMagic.com or the Runes of Magic Wiki!

Here's the official release on the next chapter for RoM:

We are proud to announce Chapter II of Runes of Magic – The Elven Prophecy. Release of Chapter II is planned for September in 2009, and completely FREE! During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we already showed parts of the first new content coming out in August, like the new region “Weeping Coast”. With this first addition, the level cap will be raise to level 52. (and then raise to level 55 in September)

As the name already suggests, one of the main elements of “Chapter II – The Elven Prophecy” will be the introduction of the Elves as a playable race. Coming along with a huge new background story, new regions and many new quests.

According to the legends, demons of human origin – having degenerated into underworld beings under the influence of the runes – forged an alliance with the nagas in ancient times. Together, these evil forces brought war and devastation to the world of Taborea. An alliance of elves and humans succeeded in banishing the demons into the void and drove back the Nagas behind a magical wall. However, when elven prince ‘Sig’aylas’ removed the holy sword ‘Arclight’ from the wall to defend his human truelove, the wall perished and the naga threat flared up once again.

You probably heard that there are two new character classes coming along with Chapter II, but here is more info: These two classes will add in as a perfectly addition to the already huge possibilities of the dual class system.
If you are not interested in testing out a new class or race, you don’t have to worry. New challenges await all experienced players in form of challenging dungeons, raid instances as well as new PvP modes. Due to all that new content, the level cap with “Chapter II – The Elven Prophecy” will be raised for all characters to level 55!

Another new feature will be the Combat pet system for the World of Taborea. Thanks to that feature, you’ll be able to actively train your virtual companions, so that they can help you in future battles.

So many new features are coming out! But that's not all! The ambience of the game will also be enhanced. The new regions and the old territories will benefit from an improved graphic engine. Sound and Music will also receive improvements by the renowned sound-studio of Dynamedion, to further extend the game experience!

Runes of Magic New Guild Castle System Announced!

Runes of Magic has announced a new Guild Castle System! The most recent article posted at RunesofMagic.com  also offers background information concerning the building process, material requirements and information about the advantages of building a castle. To read more about castles visit TheRomWiki.com or checkout the new Guild Castle Page at Runes of Magic's official website!

Here's the official news notice on the new Guild Castles:

As a guild member you are part of a bigger fellowship, which experiences a lot of adventures together. The planning of upcoming events and exchanging of tales from the good ole' days, happens on a nearly daily base. To further improve the strength of the group, we have created a special sub page for guild castles.

On this page you can get a first glance on how a guild castle can look like, you also receive background information concerning the building process, material requirements and information about the advantages of building such a castle.

Besides having a place for guild meetings and additional storage room for many items, a guild castle is also a symbol of prestige: you can even build a throne or invite visitors. In exchange for resources, you can also upgrade the castle with gates, which can be opened and closed, or you can install teleporters back to the world of Taborea in certain places of the castle.

Finally you can find additional information about the newly added technology tree buildings, which can be built in exchange for resources. These buildings provide your guild with special bonus effects, e.g. if you spend time studying in the library you will benefit from a partial reduction of XP debt. Stables on the other side grant a temporary bonus on riding speed.

This information and more about the guild castle system can be found on our new sub page for guild castles.

Please let us know what you think about this in our current survey. (for details about the survey, please visit the Runes of Magic website)

Runes of Magic Asks: Are You Just Playing, Or Have You Made A Home?

Posted May 12, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic this week asks if you're just playing, or if you've made a home? A fair question indeed! They follow that up with a pretty hefty discount on anything and everything FURNITURE! The housing starter package this week will be half of it's normal cost, and the same goes for several other pieces of furniture! If you've been thinking about decorating your home - now's the time! To take advantage of this deal visit the item shop ingame!

Here's some information from TheRomWiki.com on housing in Runes of Magic:

If you’re sweaty, covered in blood and dirt and your armor has taken quite a beating, many a hero hopes to withdraw back into his own home to get some rest.

This is exactly what you will find in Runes of Magic! Your own home is available to you from the very beginning, and you can enter it for the first time in Logar. Setting up your interior is fairly simple: Just buy the items, “drag&drop” them into one of the available slots, click the button to place it and that’s it. You can turn, spin and move and place the object freely.

Decorate as you wish: taste variations Currently there are over 130 available interior items -with more to come- giving players many different options to decorate their home.. A Variety of tables, chairs, rugs, fireplaces, beds, wall decorations, room-dividers… the range of possibilities allows individual design for anyone’s tastes!

    The (treasure)chest: item storage

Of course Runes of Magic offers a bank in every large city. But since humankind has always been hunters and gatherers, players have access to their own chests as well, in which they can store all their precious treasures. The first of those chests has 20 slots and can –like everything else- be freely placed within your home. More chests can be bought and placed at anytime, of course!

The players' new cloths: the mannequin

Everybody knows mannequins and hardly anyone has walked past shop windows without gawking at the clothing they are dressed in. In Runes of Magic players can put such mannequins in their houses: There are male ones and female ones and of course you can put several of them in your home. With one click the equipment screen appears where the players can dress up the mannequin with their own armor. That does not only look great but also has an additional advantage. If you are in a hurry and want to dress up for the next raid, with one click you can exchange the armor you are currently wearing with that which is on the mannequin.

Crafting sites: from blacksmith to alchemist

Everybody knows the problem. You just collected all the materials necessary for the next few armor sets and you are standing at one of the forges in the city when other players come by to ask: “Hi. You are a blacksmith, right? Please craft this-or-that item for me.”

Those who would rather quietly practice their profession can just put the necessary crafting sites in their house. There are anvils for blacksmiths, laboratories for alchemists or huge pots for chefs. For each profession the right equipment is available.

One account, eight characters, one house

Below was advertised intent. However, it is incorrect.

It doesn’t matter how many characters you have, they all live in the same house. Therefore it is really easy to put the potions you just made into one of the chests and pick them up with the next character. No more of this annoying “One moment, got to switch my account”.

The reality is each character is currently able to have a house. Each will have to be adorned to gain bonuses for the currently logged in character. One character does not have access the the chests in another character's house.

A second password gives your home additional protection. You can pass it on to friends and family to give them access to your homestead.

My home is my castle: expansion

In the near future it will become possible to expand your home. More floors, bigger rooms, attics, closets, as with all the features of Runes of Magic, the possibilities are nearly endless.

Click me: interaction with surrounding objects

Mannequins are not the only things that can be used with a short click. Also the flames in the fireplace and on the candlestick can be lit and give the house a homely atmosphere.

    The future: more ideas

Every three months a free add-on with fresh content for Runes of Magic will be published. That includes pieces of furniture and other additions for the house. It will be fascinating to see what will happen here, after all Halloween is at the doorstep and Christmas is not too far away.

The Runes of Magic community is highly important to us and for new creative ideas we like to pick the players brains. So, your visit to the forums, which are there for that purpose, is highly welcome.

The first website is our very own Runes of Magic Wiki - which now has over 2000 articles available to readers. The second is RunesDB.com which is rapidly closing in on 15,000 indexed items and 10,000 player profiles!

Here's a little more information about the Curse fansites for Runes of Magic:

The RoM Wiki has hit over 2000 articles and has nearly 300 contributors helping make it the #1 information source for Runes of Magic. If you've been playing the game (If you haven't shame on you but go here: Download Runes of Magic), you'll enjoy the many guides and useful tables the wiki has to offer.

The largest new expansion to the wiki is the Instance List which has detailed information on your favorite instances, rewards and XP obtained for completing them, and tips on the best known methods. There are also Daily Quest List with quests from level 1-50, the location to pick it up, the requirements, and the rewards obtained for completing it. It's a great reference if you're out exploring and kill something and want to know if the loot you just got can be used to fill a quest quota. There's also a new Guild List that highlights guilds on servers who are actively recruiting!

The RunesDB website is the largest database for Runes of Magic to date. There are currently nearly 15,000 items indexed on the database and nearly 10,000 player profiles. RunesDB is an excellent way to go gear shopping, find something you're looking for and then find out how it's obtained. Data is uploaded directly to RunesDB from the Curse Client; the process is automatic and will get your characters listed on RunesDB for all to see! By downloading the client you'll also be able to help thousands of other players by adding items and quest information to the RunesDB website!

Runes of Magic Introduces Botany to Taborea!

Posted May 02, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic introduces Botany to the travelers of Taborea! This has been something that players have been asking for and the crew at RoM has responded kindly! Players can (in the VERY near future) grow plants that will yield rare runes and other materials that can be used in the crafting system. Look to TheRomWiki.com to have all the information in caring for these plants that you'll need as soon as the system hits the live server!

Here's a botanists' dream come true:

Craftsmen and artisans are always looking for the best materials, the rarest and most valuable ingredients.

They have to travel far, climb the steepest hills and are always in danger of getting run over by roaming monsters only to harvest a few bits and pieces.

A few Taborean botanists now made the break-through, cultivating uncommon and rare plants and harvest some of the most sought-after crafting materials.

Not wanting to keep their secret findings for too long, they will start teaching their knowledge in the coming weeks.

All an aspiring hobby-botanists needs, people say, is just a planting pot, some seeds (which can e.g. looted from slain monsters) and a green thumb. People feeding and watering their plants regularly will be rewarded by full, sun-kissed fruits or materials.

Extremly rare plants need extra care but can yield special runes, which adventurers can use to upgrade their character's equipment, right up to ores, wood and new plants. Given the right kind of seeds, the harvest can even be rare "blue" crafting material.

We will be giving you more on this new, up-coming feature of Runes of Magic in the coming weeks.

Curse Announces RunesDB.com - The First Complete Runes of Magic Database

Posted Apr 14, 2009 by DoranM
    Filed in Runes of Magic

    RunesDB.com

Curse.com has released a full item, quest, NPC, spell, and recipe database for RoM players. As a player you can also automatically upload a profile of your character to the site using the Curse Client. Your use of the Curse Client will allow us to collect and upload valuable information from the game, while also allowing you to access an enormous database of quests, items, and of course your own personal profile. A picture is worth a thousand words; so here's a few screenshots to help us display the wealth of information readily available for you at RunesDB.com:

    Full details on any quest!

Tons of information on every area in the game!

    How does it work?

Our data collection is done via a small application which runs on Windows. It sits quietly in your system tray, periodically sending information on entities (monsters and npcs), items, quests, your profile, and various other small bits of information to the ROMDB. The client poses no security threat to your system and we do not collect any personal information such as email addresses or passwords.

The client itself is not a hack and does not provide any advantage over other players. All it does is collect harmless information about objects in the game.

    What do we collect?

As stated above, we only collect what is necessary for our database, no personal information or passwords are collected. Data collected from the game includes:

    • Your character's profile
    • Item statistics
    • Entity information (NPCs, interactable objects, monsters), including what they drop and where they spawn
    • Quest information, including which entities give you quests, and which complete them
    • Zone information

    How can I help?

To submit data to the ROMDB will first need to register for an account. Once you have an account, you may then download the installer. After installation you will be asked for your username and password, enter your CurseID username and password, not your game account login. Once done the client will work on it's own. You can check its status and change any configuration by using the icon in your system tray.
