Shadowbane

Shadowbane characters to be wiped

The Shadowbane team over at Wolfpack Studios is taking a bold step with their next game update, dubbed "Shadowbane Reboot." This isn't your typical game update; it's called a reboot for a reason. Once this patch goes live, all Shadowbane server and character data is being completely wiped -- giving players of the near 4-year-old game a chance at a fresh start.

This is an interesting approach to bringing back old players, too. No worries of having to deal with the "catch up" phase that typically happens when returning to an MMO after a hiatus.

The Shadowbane Team decided that it would be best for the longevity of the game to reset all server and character data and start from scratch. By doing so, the game benefits in a variety of ways. First, we feel the community will be better served by being more consolidated and less fragmented. Second, resetting the game removes items that have accumulated over the years that have caused imbalances to the game. In addition, numerous updates and enhancements have been made to the Shadowbane service to improve the performance. Some of the changes were not as effective due to preexisting data and resetting the service will allow the servers to work under optimal conditions. Finally, this update also gives us a chance to address certain game issues.

While the character wipe is what will no doubt get the most attention in this update, Wolfpack Studios is also taking the opportunity to make a few sweeping gameplay changes along with the reboot. For one, they're removing Tower Guards from the game, they're nixing resource costs from armor for everything other than magical effects, and there are also a number of balance changes being introduced.

In addition to the above, the following changes are being made in this update:

  • Melee Weapons have had their range slightly increased and weight decreased
  • Throwing Weapons have had their range slightly decreased and are now created on the Projectile Craftsman as are Bows and Crossbows
  • Khan’Ov Skrekel, a new Freehold, has been added to the Vorringia mapset in the desert; unlike Safeholds the entire city is PvP+ and allows for transportation by all even on the Loreplay server.
  • The Fence Merchants in Sea Dog’s Rest have been relocated to Khan’Ov Skrekel and Fate’s Peddler is taking a well-deserved vacation.
  • The maximum amount of minions a Guard Captain can have has been decreased to 2.
  • Various Bow and Crossbow Powers have been decreased.
  • The Player-based Area of Effect attack on Siege Engines has been removed.
  • Buildings of War now use square perimeter placement area instead of a circumference.
  • An issue with the Summon power has been fixed.
  • Maintenance Fees for Rank 8 Trees of Life will now be deducted.

Glad I don't play Shadowbane, or I'd have to go cancel my account.

What if your country suddenly decided to take all your money, and all your stuff, and sell it, evict you toss you out in the street and say "Enjoy the fresh start! Have a nice day!"

How much would you trust them? Would you ever trust them again?

More than likely, you would hear this giant sucking sound as everyone makes a bum rush for the border never to return again.

I foresee this happening with Shadowbane, if they go ahead with this without sufficient compensation in terms of fast or free levels and replacement options for lost gear and money. Nobody like to start over again no matter how fresh it is to turn into a baby again!

I hope you all realize that Shadowbane is a free service now and has been for a long time. You don't need to pay to play it at all. Just download, create account, and play. Why cancel an account you aren't being billed for? Besides, many players of Shadowbane welcome the wipe and fresh start. It is nothing like being tossed out, but more like being freed from prison. They took off the shackles and are giving you new clothes. Make a life for yourself.

I personally would be kind of upset in the short term if I were playing this game but then I d get over it and keep going. It's really not much different than starting a new character.

Free? No charge. Nothing's really free, we spend time doing things. I go to sail my boat and the free harbor is close I don't like it that I spent all that time driving there with the boat for nothing.

If they told players that the toons would be wiped possibly, than I guess it's all ok then.

I think someone needs to realize that, that comparison is hardly something to put together lol.

It's a f2p game, not something to that you spent your hard earned money on, and even if it was, as a Shadowbane player, i welcome this restart, something SOME mmo's needs to do.

    ahem...swg...

This is ludicrous. Admittedly, I don't play Shadowbane, but if I did and invested all those hours into it, I'd be outraged. All that time spent on nothing.

I'm not a shadowbane player, but i think that a complete reset would be interesting, the reason being that everything is level again, meaning that if you joined the game late you are equal to someone who has played the game since its launch.

I might even download myself a copy...

level 1-75 in shadowbane takes all of like 24 hours..why would you reset everyone will be 75 within the end of the day....the money would take three more days to farm out, but the cities would take a while to rebuild...
