Very interesting and I hope other people looking to establish real money for virtual cash and back again economies take a real hard look here.

Banks in Second Life are collapsing; real money lost

Seeing as our interest in the virtual world seems to be growing i think subjects like this are defiantly needed to show people that sometimes our online life can interact and run a muck on our off line lives

Banks in Second Life are collapsing; real money lost

I've been in Second Life since early 2006 and I was a customer of the now defunct Ginko Financial and I am a current customer of BCX Bank. Mr. Ristow has been working frantically to make sure BCX doesn't go down as hard as Ginko did. Paying attention to the way many avatars have interacted with the SL world, gambling was the only thing really keeping the SL economy alive. While I agree with LL's ban on gambling, it's seriously hurting the economy of SL. After this announcement from Linden Labs regarding banks, many up and coming business owners will abandon their plans and will sell.

I've personally spent US Dollars on Linden Dollars and saw a nice return on my investment as the money I purchased went directly into my store. I personally have seen more sales and more visitors since the January announcement, but I feel that this is only due to the fact that the money people were depositing into their accounts "is burning a hole in their pockets." While the ban on unlicensed banks may help defibrilate the dying economy, it will only be a temporary solution.

Unregistered Banks get the Boot

SL has gone downhill since they made it 100% free with no creditcard needed. There were a lot less idiots back when it was $10 for a lifetime membership, and stuff like this didn't happen.

Unregistered Banks get the Boot

Agreed, to an extent.
There was always people who hacked the game, even before the credit card need disappearing, which made it quite unpleasant at times.
But the no credit card just brought in an influx of morons who did all wonderful sorts of lewd things just because they could... Not to mention it lost a lot of it's luster just because so many people stopped "playing" when it happened.

Future of mmorpg?
