Overall today's WoW we play on a daily, semi-daily or weekly basis has completely changed from the vanilla WoW we all knew. To some this change has been what forced them away from the game & for others it has made the game better.
If you wondering, My stance is it has changed the game for the better. In Pre BC rolling a paladin meant one thing. Holy Holy Holy & maybe Ret purly for the buffs. In BC all specs became useable especially the Prot Paladin. In WotLK all 3 classes were well balanced and OP in many respects across the board. Now that we have rolled into patch 3.2 some would say Ret is fairly well balanced, Holy is now the top healing class & Prot tanks are just bad ass.
I for one have to say it has been nice to not have to focus on Spell power anymore since Blizz built it into the prot tree but it has been a pain juggeling around TPS with guildies doing over 7k dps on regular fights. Pushing the limits to a constant 9-11k tps has been a balancing act that has rather been fun.
In general it is just fun to be a prot Tank these days :)
