Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa fingered for Auto Assault code

A reader of Tobolds MMORPG Blog has accused Richard Garrot's Tabula Rasa of using Auto Assault source in some elements of the game. In fact, he went as far to say that he is, "100% sure."

The character models are the same, the UI elements are the same, some of the music is even the same! I looked at some of the quest rewards in Tabula Rasa, and they even use the same exact item fonts that they did in Auto Assault!

Former NCsoft Employee Jeremy Dalberg was able to clarify what might be going on and went on to say that the two are seperate titles even though NCSoft did publish Auto Assault.

The similarities may or may not be there - I would not call it a fact that elements were shared though. But regardless, I don't see what the point of this supposed similarity is? Is NCSoft accused of stealing NetDevil code and assets?

Despite this drama, both Tobold and several other posters commented that Auto Assault is now a defunct game and if the game developers can find the right source code for a task they are attempting to complete and it has already been tried and tested then salvage is fine.

Huh? Dont get the defunct game comment, is it possible to get the source code and start the game up on your own servers and/or snatch the pieces you want?

Officially, the game has been cancelled which means officially, the game is defunct :-)

The above comment is in reference to Auto Assault and not Tabula Rasa which is very much NOT cancelled lol. In effect, what RGTR has been accused of is using source code from a now-defuinct title in order to accomplish certain tasks within the game. Defunct simply means to be no longer in effect or use and considering that Auto Assault is no longer officially in effect or use, it is very much a defunct title.

Soo recycling code between game of the same compagny should be a shame? I don't really get it.

Some "Un" words I felt described my experience with Tabula Rasa in the beta...
    Ungripped,
    Unimpressed,
    Unconvinced.
Which is a shame as I'm an avid Sci fi fan and it would have been great to have a GOOD sci fi game :(,
and I DO see the similarities to Auto Assault...another game that had lots of potential but failed to deliver.

If its a deunct game for one, and its from the same company...this seems kind of like a tedious battle.

A brilliant comment from V for Vendetta comes to mind right about now... "I just report the news. I don't write it... " Firstly, I personally see this as a pointelss accusation made by someone who fails to understand the dynamics of creating a game and I fail to see how this could have any negligible effect on the game itself. While I personally found Auto assault to be a terrible game, Tabula Rasa is one of the more inovative titles of recent years.

I personally find Tabula Rasa to be a fun game, but I also have a feeling it's going to appeal to a somewhat niche market similar to City of Heroes.

That's not to knock the game - it was fairly enjoyable to me - so I'm going to be playing it at release. I suppose one of the things I like about the game is the refreshing change from fantasy to sci-fi.

It would be reasonable to salvage and recycle code, but this accusation is seriously embarrassing to all the "signature creative vision" of the legendary Richard Garriott. He has hyped the ORIGINALITY of this out-of-the-box gaming experience. Here's a quote from some years back from the very fanboi Escapist magazine about Origin Systems ...."Richard Garriott made it a point of pride to start each new Ultima entirely from scratch, with not a line of code carried over from earlier games. Even the map editors and other tools were coded anew."

I also felt there were many similarities between AA beta and TR beta. The action, the chars, etc.. are all similar. Both games ran very slow on my PC even on low settings.
I got the feeling that both betas were still far from being ready for release but NCsoft released them anyway.
It's like NCsoft never learns from mistakes. If they are not careful TR might also have the same ending as AA did.

NetDevil (developer of Auto Assault) is not owned by NCsoft.
