sat down to a recent interview with Cal Crowner and Josh Drescher about the upcoming release of Stygian Abyss for Ultima Online! This is the 8th expansion for the game and will coincide with their 12th anniversary. UO's known as the "game that started it all" and we asked several questions about the new expansion and what more we'll be seeing from UO in the future. Ultima Online; Stygian Abyss will be UO's eighth expansion. It launches on September 8, 2009 at an upgrade cost of $29.99. A new player pack will sell for $39.99, which includes 30 days of gametime.

Here's a look at our candid interview with Cal Crowner, UO development mananger, and Josh Drescher, Producer at EA Mythic, we hope you enjoy:

Curse: UO is going into it's 12th anniversary this fall and is launching it's 8th expansion. What are some of the things in this latest expansion that might entice previous players back to the game that started it all?

Josh: This is a great time to return to the product, as it's an opportunity to experience the game in 3D, and we've been very careful to make sure that we have complete support for everything in Stygian Abyss for players who play the 2D version of the game. If you're a plan of the old single player games like Ultima VI this expansion will tie into some of the content that was going on there with Gargoyles and some of the experiences in that game, and brings that legacy forward into Ultima Online. Stygian Abyss will also add the first playable race added to the game in some time, Gargoyles.

Cal: The enhanced client isn't true 3D client, it's more like 2.5D, what the enhanced client does is take the Kingdom Reborn Engine and then allows players to play with more of the Legacy art with a slightly higher resolution. In addition to the client overhaul there will be several new skills, a massive new dungeon, and smaller systems that players have really responded well to, like snake-charming, chicken-coops, and smaller enhancements that players will really enjoy.

Curse: Will the Stybian Abyss client support 3D, will players still be able to play with the isometric view they're accustomed to if they want?

Cal: The classic client is the 2D client that everyone knows and loves, the new client is an enhancement and is a re-vamp of the Kingdom Reborn engine and we've increased the stability of the client.

Josh: As Cal said, it's not a typical first person-shooter style of 3D, but it fits the look and play style of Ultima, and you keep that classic feel but increase the look significantly.

Cal: Stability is key, and we've also made it possible for players to move over their macros from the 2D client and added some features that were previously worked with UOAssist. You can also play across two screens, so when you're in the Abyss you really get a feel that you're enveloped in the scene.

Curse: New dungeons have always been exciting and some of the past additions, Lamp Post stealing in Doom, the Dark Father, etc. What's in store for players with Stygian Abyss?

Cal: The Abyss. If you've seen the trailers you'll know that the Abyss is MASSIVE. The idea is the Abyss is out of time, it's in a void, and the areas don't make sense. There's one area called the "Silver Sapling" and there's this massive glowing tree in this area next to lava pits and you'll notice in different areas you'll have a different experience. If you enter the Abyss form Britannia you'll have a very different experience than if you enter it from the Gargoyle side. Everything comes together in the Chamber of Virtue where the Slasher of Veils is and there's a chasm in between that divides the area. Within the Abyss there's between 7-10 smaller encounter areas and will really give the players a unique experience.

Curse: There's a new playable race, Gargoyles. Tell us a little bit about how playing a gargoyle will be different than playing a human in Stygian Abyss.

Cal: You're huge, and you can fly!

Josh: The other piece is that with Elves and Humans you have a capacity to do certain things, if you're a Gargoyle you have a higher capacity to do certain things. By that we mean there are three different weapon types: Light, Medium, and Heavy. The Gargoyle will have the capacity to throw these new weapons and a higher capacity for Mysticism. They also can of course fly and this has been balanced by making flying still drain stamina, but the ability to just get up and fly is something we think players are really going to enjoy.

Curse: By capacity for Mysticism do you mean a higher skill cap or something else?

Cal: No it's not a skill cap, they'll just be better at doing it, it's roughly a 15% better chance to imbue, and for mysticism they have a higher rate of success than their human and elven counterparts.

Josh: It's not actually a hard cap adjustment. It's an improvement to percentage chance of success for certain abilities.

Curse: Imbuing, Mysticism, and Throwing are three new skills that will be coming out with Stygian Abyss, can you tell us a little about why they're important and how they fit into the game?

    Cal:
Throwing is specific to Gargoyles, and there's three unique moves they can do with throwing, the third of which is "Mystic Arc" and should be a nice surprise for PvPers once they learn how to use it. Mysticism is similar to spell weaving which already exists in the game, this will give players the ability to cast up to16 new spells, there's also a new summonable creature, the Rising Colossus, that's also going to be useful to players who choose to master this new skill. Imbuing will allow players to take things they already own or have, unravel them, and potentially make their own unique weapons and armor.

Curse: Staining is a new skill that allows gardeners, cooks, and alchemists, will that be different than previously rare and awarded dye sets?

Cal: Great question! When we developed staining we took a great deal of time to make sure that the colors would be friendly in regards to those who have other dyes or colored armor. We tried to be very careful when developing these colors to keep the system fun, but not interfere with other systems in the game.

    Josh:
It's intended to be complimentary instead of replacement. This will not be a stand in for other dye colors. They're slightly different and you'll be able to understand the distinct value of an existing dye set compared to these new staining sets.

Curse: Can you give us an overview of the new Champion Spawn areas accessible from Felucca?

Cal: How we did Champion spawns is a little different than we've done in the past. The process is much more interactive and there's a path to get to the Spawn. You won't be able to just teleport in and teleport out. You'll need to follow the path to get into the area, we've also implemented semi-instancing that allows us to set up a queue for players to get into the champ spawns. We've also got a timer to prevent people from being AFK and camping the spawns. A lot of thought has gone into the process and we think it will provide a very smooth experience that players will really enjoy.

    Curse:
What will the spawn be, what kind of Champions are we looking at?

Cal: The Prime Evil Lich and the Abyssal Inferno are the Champs, the boss mobs for peerless encounters are the Stygian Dragon, the Medusa, and the Slasher of Veils. The other part that's interesting about Champ spawns is that the battles change as the spawn continues, so as the encounter escalates there are things that will come into the spawn area that will assist. For The Abyssal the environment will change and become more hostile as the spawn progresses. You'll get very different experiences in these Champ spawns.

Curse: How BIG is this expansion compared to expansions of the past. If I've played UO before and I'm reading this what are you saying about this expansion that could really entice me into playing again?

Josh: The easiest way to explain it is that the Abyss is the largest dungeon content release in UO, it represents the largest dungeon content expansion in the history of the game, so if you really like significant challenges, and major new avenues of adventures, it won't get any better than this. This expansion is an enormous, content rich, addition that ties back into the 30 year history of Ultima, and re-connects players to everything that made this game a distinct property. This is an excellent way to experience all the best parts of UO.

Cal: Also I would say that the ticket for me is the things we learned from open beta is the amount of positive feedback that we received from players. They liked the little things we did, they came in and had FUN. The second part of that is that we did everything with the very distinct purpose of making sure we put what players wanted into this expansion. The way we're able to validate that comment is that we gave our surveys to closed beta testers and tweaked the outcome of the product based on those results. We're still making adjustments to make sure that this is something both developers and players are going to enjoy.

Curse: It's been a long time since we've seen UO on a store shelf. Will Stygian Abyss be something we can pickup in stores?

Josh: The idea of the preeminence and importance of boxed products is on the decline in the industry and is going to continue to diminish over the next 5 years or so. Ultima Online has such an international reach, and such along history, literally millions of people have played this game, and giving those players the ability to download the game on a moments notice really enhances the sense of immediacy that people have come to expect with online products. With services like Steam setting the foundation for the expectations of quality and ease of delivery we think we'll see a lot less boxes on the shelves and a lot more easy distribution methods. We're committed to that as a studio (Mythic) with several of our products moving forward and we really want to look heavily at the potential for digital distribution both in place of and in consort with boxed products as is appropriate.

Curse: What type of resources will you dedicate to getting this game out there, and getting it in front of gamers?

Josh: Cal and I just got back from L.A. yesterday, and we were working on some press events, tv spots, we were on G4, and this will be the biggest marketing push that UO's seen in years. We remain very committed as a studio to the franchise and will be championing this product wherever we go.

Thanks so much for the sit down guys!

Ultima Online will get expanded in 2009 with a brand new expansion called "The Stygian Abyss". Today Mythic announced that the website for the upcoming expansion has launched.

    The Stygian Abyss

An entrance to the Stygian Abyss has been discovered upon the world of Sosaria, hidden in the seething caldera of a newly-risen volcano. At first glance nothing more than a colossal web of dank caverns and oppressive dungeons, it houses an ancient city that acts as a barrier between the worlds of Sosaria and Tel Mur, home to the Gargoyles. Masters of Imbuing and Mysticism, these clawed and winged creatures find themselves facing certain destruction at the hands of the Abyss, forced to delve into the secrets of the lost city and the rift to their sister world...

The producer of Ultima Online, Calwin Crowner, has posted a developer journal entry (producer's letter) over at the official UO site. It's amazing how long UO have existed now.

I'll introduce myself by stating what the heck my job title means. I am the Development Manager for Ultima Online. Hold on a minute, that kind of just caught up to me. No pressure. This means that server crashes, staffing the team, schedule decisions, prioritizing bug fixes, squelching rumors, and emanating a general sense of well-being are well within my responsibilities for delegation. Restated: when it’s “broke” I try to figure out who is going to fix it. If it’s not broken I do my best to make sure it remains that way.

    UO team moving to Warhammer?

Apparently this is the case. According to a forum post on Stratics, which is also backed up by an article on Destructoid, a goodly portion of the Ultima Online team - including all of QA - was laid off yesterday afternoon.

This is just the beginning of layoffs at EA, from the sounds of it. Destructoid received an email that looked to be from Mythic VP Rob Denton, detailing plans for the coming months, which included cutting overhead costs for several of EA's studios - most notably Redwood Shores and the EA Mythic studio in Fairfax, Virginia.

Given this, John Riccitiello, our CEO, has tasked the company to get its costs in line with revenues ... Every studio, group and division of the company has been tasked to review its overall headcount and adjust its organization to meet the needs of the business moving forward.

Another thing of note that came out of this news is that the Ultima Online team will be moving to the EA Mythic studio in Fairfax, which makes sense, as EA Mythic is now (and has been for a while) maintaining the game.

Ultima Online turned ten years old this week. It's amazing to think about the fact that even in its old age, the game is still going strong - continually provide updates with new content for players to enjoy.

The graphical overhaul by Kingdom Reborn certainly helped to breath new life into the game; not only did it introduce a 3D environment for players to explore - a stark contrast to the original game's 2D world - but it also introduced a new User Interface that allows interface modifications to be created.

Now with the 10th anniversary celebration, EA Mythic is offering a chance to return to Sosaria - all you need to do is re-install the game, start it up and log-in with your username and password. As long as your UO account is in good standing, you'll be able to play for free until October 9, 2 a.m. PST.

That's not all though; the new producer of Ultima Online - Chris Rabideau - took the opportunity to introduce himself to the community.

    Ultima Online Weekly Recap

Posted Sep 04, 2007 by Kody
    Filed in Ultima Online

Last week's UO news consisted of client patches for both the 2D Client and the Kingdom Reborn Client, an update about the ability to order a DVD version of the Kingdom Reborn Installer if you don't want to wait for the download, as well as the typical Five on Friday you see every week on the UOHerald.

A couple pieces from Friday's FoF(which was actually Six on Friday!):

"I have Bushido, and I'm having trouble controlling and/or bonding with my Lesser Hiryu. What's up with that?"

First of all, the bonding issue. Wilki looked into it, and turns out it was actually bugged before - you could bond with the lesser hiryu even if you didn't have the skill to control it. That's not good. However, by fixing that issue, we actually changed it so you can't bond with it unless you meet the taming requirements - Bushido isn't taken into account. That's not good, either, and we're considering that a bug at the moment.

As for control chance, we aren't seeing issues with it so far. If you have 90 Bushido, you have a 60% chance to control the lesser hiryu, and it scales up to a 90% chance at 120 adjusted skill, or 95% at 120 real skill (no jewelry.) Even at 120 real skill, you'll probably want to keep some food on hand in case your lesser hiryu refuses an order - you don't want its loyalty to drop too far!

"Is mining skill gain affected by the resource changes?"

Yes and no. No, because skill gain by actual mining is not difficulty-based - it doesn't matter what ore type you're digging up, you have the same chance for gain, so changing the ore types won't affect the rate of gain there. Yes, because smelting IS difficulty-based, and if you're getting less of the higher-level ores, you'll have fewer chances to gain skill by smelting.

"How is damage determined for Chain Lightning and Meteor Swarm?"

    Wilki says:

"Ok, so magery spells do damage based on their spell level. Circle seven spells do between 52-56 damage. (Plus any other damage modifiers like your intelligence, skills, etc).

For Chain Lightning and Meteor Swarm, if you only hit one target, the target takes that much damage. If you hit more than one target, the damage amount is doubled, and then divided amongst each target evenly.

(If the damage numbers seem high, it's because eval int is actually a negative modifier below 90 skill.)"

There's a new client patch for the Kingdom Reborn beta client out today, and this also marks the official lifting of the NDA for the Kingdom Reborn beta.

The Kingdom Reborn Client version 2.45.1.2 will be deployed at 4:00PM PDT (11:00PM GMT). Please note that several of the below changes will only be visible on Test Centers 1 and 4.

(Why are we posting the KR Client patch notes on the front page, you wonder? Why, this patch officially lifts the NDA! Stay tuned for more beta information.)

Party commands (accept, decline, etc), are now prefixed with a / instead of a –

The crafting menus stay where you put them

    Treasure maps work!

Removed headgear in character creation to prevent the hairstyle choices from being obscured

Made improvements to the World Map

    Fixed several clipping issues

Accounts will no longer “time out” during character creation

When an account is disconnected for exceeding the idle timer, a message will pop up alerting the player

Player, pet and mob healthbars will properly turn green when poisoned

Fixed bug with healthbars sometimes not updating

Fixed issues with fires burning through walls and ceilings

Kingdom Reborn BETA Invites have been sent out!

    Filed in Ultima Online

A TON of beta invites went out last night, and there are a few important bits of info you all need to know.

    - We are still under NDA. This means you are not allowed to discuss, share pictures of, post reviews of, distribute the installer for, or in any way spread information about Kingdom Reborn (with the exceptions listed in the actual agreement, of course)

    - We invited many, many people and the download site is predictably slammed. Please be patient with it.

    - Due to the large number of people invited, we will not be inviting everyone to the internal forums. (We do not have the moderation resources to handle the load.) Please use the "KR Beta" category on the feedback forms for suggestions, and the in-game bug reports tool or the uobeta AT ea DOT com email address to report bugs.

    - If you had been invited to the beta before this week, and did not get an internal forum invite, please be patient. We don't have a mass account creation tool, so it takes a while to get them all set up

    Filed in Ultima Online

There's a new publish being pushed live today, with quite a few changes and additions, including the ability to log in with the Kingdom Reborn Beta Client.

On Monday, April 30, we will be publishing to all servers and publishing a mandatory client patch. This patch will require substantial downtime - the plan is as follows:

    - At 9:00 AM PDT (4:00 PM GMT) all servers will be taken down and the servers will be published

    - When the publish is complete and the patch is ready to go, we will bring up TC1. We will be testing and encourage players to join us.

    - Once we're confident, we will be bringing up the other servers slowly, beginning with Origin.

The publish process is estimated to take approximately 8 hours. We'll be updating regularly on the Herald if the schedule changes at all. The patch is fairly large (about 57 megs) so plan for it to take a bit of time to download.

Due to the nature of some of the changes, we expect players to find some minor art bugs - if you find a bug, please report it to uobugs@uo.com!

Notes after the jump (updated with clarification to Arms Lore change):

    • Updated the shards to allow the Kingdom Reborn beta client to be able to connect to them
    • Discontinued the 3D client
    • “Add Party Member", "Remove Party Member", "Leave the Party", "Disband the Party", and "Party can loot me" and "Party cannot loot me" are now context menu options
    • New players
      • All new players, regardless of what they select, will now start in New Haven
      • Previous directed experience template quests (Paladin, Ninja, Samurai, etc) are no longer offered to new players
      • New players no longer get the Tour
      • Young players no longer get the Mongbat Quest
      • New players will be able to take a number of different quests aimed at helping them raise appropriate skills in New Haven
      • All starting profession templates will have 4 skills that start at 30 skill points.
    • Players in Old Haven will be teleported to the center of New Haven.
    1. The teleport will NOT happen under the following conditions:
      1. The player is on a Siege ruleset shard
      2. The player's first login is not in Haven
      3. The player has already been redirected
    2. Pets will also teleport with the player UNLESS:
      1. The pet is a summoned creature
      2. The pet is a necro animate
    • Multiple World Changes
      • Haven has become ruined
      • New Haven has begun to emerge
      • Some areas, especially dungeons, have a different look and feel
      • Roads have been widened
    • Arms Lore has been changed:
      • Arms Lore will increase when weapons and armor are crafted
      • When a weapon is exceptionally crafted, the damage increase modifier will increase by 1% per 20 points of Arms Lore.
      • When a piece of armor (not including shields) is exceptionally crafted, it will receive a resist bonus based on the crafter’s Arms Lore skill. For every 20 points of Arms Lore, one resist normally available on that piece of armor will be raised by 1, for a total possible bonus of 5 distributed randomly. (Ex. At GM Arms Lore, the total resist bonus is +5%. One resist could receive the full +5% bonus. Alternatively, one resist could receive +2%, and three other resists could receive +1%, for the total of +5%. )
