With the holidays now over, the Vanguard team is back into the swing of things and releasing updates for the game.  Check out all of the details for the February 4th update below.

    Game Update - Wednesday February 4th, 2009

The winter solstice has come and passed. The inhabitants of Telon are welcoming the return of the sun and longer days. In the wake of Gloriann’s Festival, strange things are happening in New Targonor. First came the horrific nightmares. Then children began going missing. Despite the best efforts of the Thestran Watch and the Sages Arcane to find any evidence, little to no light has been shed on either occurrence. Though warmer days are ahead for Telon, how dark will they be?

Those curious about the recent events should seek out Edric Nichols amongst New Targonor’s courtyards and perhaps have a look for themselves.

3 New quests from strange beings belonging to the ‘Winter Court’.

    • Help the Winter Court acquire Dreams, Reflections, and Memories from the lands and waters of Telon.
    • Rewards include a unique enhancement item, a new fishing pole, and a new pet – Snuggles, the winter wolf.
    • Wakliki Nogswort and Finch’s Finks have a limited time offer as well. Those wanting to do battle in the Arena will want to check out his latest deal.
    • For long standing veterans, a new /claim item – “The Visionary’s Signet of Promise” – how will you choose to build your future?

    SOD

    • All NPCs on SOD should now give a small faction bonus when killed.
    • All SOD non boss NPCs hit points have been reduced significantly.
    • A set of global rares have been added to the entire island. These are new legendary items that can drop of any NPC in the area.
    • Fixed display on rucksack that said it was a drop from tier 2 bags when it is in fact a recipe drop from tier 4 bags.
    • Content
    • Changed Guar's display model to hopefully resolve some of the lag issues.
    • Queen Vixx's hit points have been fixed.
    • The waters around the towers of BOD are now shark infested. Beware those who like to skinny dipping.
    • The rare elementals in BOD are much more available now and always drop loot.  They also have a chance to drop weapon parts.
    • Fixed an issue where some mobs were casting Pantheon abilities.
    • Guar’s loot table now drops a paladin range slot item.
    • IOG Raid encounters can now drop a paladin range slot item.

    • New appearance slots can now be accessed from the character screen. These slots allow you to display the look of a different item while retaining the mods of your gear.
    • All non stat clothing that was on merchants has been converted to adventuring slots for use with appearance slots.
    • General goods vendors now sell some basic equipment that has no visual display for that slot. This allows you to turn off the visual of certain slots by placing that item in an appearance slot.

    General Appearance Bugs Fixed

    • Previewing an item with an attachment when the equipped item for that slot did not have an attachment caused the preview item to remain on the character's appearance. It now correctly disappears.

    • Mousing over a two-handed sword will show a comparison against both the primary and secondary weapons, rather than simply the primary one. Also, the first compare window will always be filled before the second ever is. Previously the second window would sometimes pop up without the first (if a one-handed weapon was moused over, and the primary-hand slot was empty, but the secondary-hand slot was full).
    • Various bugs fixed that caused items to visually disappear off of your character until you relogged.

Game Update 6 Live and Patch Notes

Posted Sep 11, 2008 by Zyuu
Filed in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

Recently Game Update 6 was deployed and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes players can rejoice with a bunch of new features such as the Isle of Dawn, Character Models Revamp and much more.

    View the patch notes below.

    Isle of Dawn
The Isle of Dawn was separated from the continent of Kojan during the cataclysm. A village of battle hardened humans and a band of zealot hobgoblins have warred against each other for centuries on the Isle. Their mutual hatred for one another runs deep and even now they are locked in an ongoing struggle. Recently though, increasing numbers of ulvari have begun to surface on the island – much to the dismay of both the humans and the hobgoblins.
Weakened by their perpetual war, the humans aren't able to capably defend themselves. Even now, their villages burn as they frantically seek aid. The isle is in desperate need of heroes.
    - The Isle of Dawn is now available for new characters!
    - When creating a new character, you will now be presented with two options for your starting location. The Isle of Dawn will be one option, and the other option will be your selected Race's standard starting area.
    - PVP, Exchange Brokers, Death experience and tombstones are turned off on the Isle of Dawn.
Player levels have been capped at 10 on the Isle.

    Character Model Revamp
Player character models in Vanguard have undergone a bit of a revamp. Not only have they been optimized for better performance but they have been given a new, updated look. The revamped models are now capable of looking much more heroic and contain a lot more personality. Worry not though, for those players who don't necessarily want the heroic look, no customization options have gone away. In fact, we are reintroducing lots of facial customization as well.

    Class Damage Updates
We have looked at and modified each class's damage capability, ensuring that each lands in their correct place in the spectrum of classes. We have looked at many things, from raid wide damage capacity to the tank's ability to control aggo, to the weak DPS of some healers and DPS classes. This was a relatively comprehensive pass to ensure that with GU6 raid targets are still killable. While the effects of these changes will primarily be felt at the highest end of the game, we are making sure that all levels of players are still functional. There has been extensive testing of these changes on the test server for the past several weeks and we'd like to thank all those players who have sent in testing logs – your efforts are greatly appreciated! For a more comprehensive list of class changes and updates, please read the list below.

    Bug Fixes
In an effort to make the launch of the Isle of Dawn go as smoothly as possible, the Vanguard development team set aside a good portion of time this update to fix as many existing bugs as possible. We are pleased to announce that well over a thousand fixes are included with this patch. While many of them may not be immediately noticeable, we've included a more detailed list of those that are below.

Game Update 6 for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will go live sometime this week.

The final changes have been made in response to the valued player feedback, and we're just about ready to release GU6 which will include thousands of bug fixes, the long awaited character model revamp, and our highly anticipated trial version of Vanguard, Isle of Dawn !

    Isle of Dawn
We're introducing a brand new starting area which will showcase all the best that Vanguard has to offer. New players will be able to experience the world of Telon on a trial basis while exploring the Isle of Dawn. Existing players can choose to start their new characters in their selected Race's standard starting area, or begin their adventures on the Isle of Dawn and enjoy new content up to level 10!

'Weakened by their perpetual war, the humans aren't able to capably defend themselves. Even now, their villages burn as they frantically seek aid. The isle is in desperate need of heroes.

    Thousands of Bug Fixes!
Putting polish on the game is an ongoing effort! Although we've always been dedicated to making Vanguard play as smoothly as possible, this Game Update you can expect to see a great number of bug fixes – over a dozen pages of patch notes, to be exact!

    Character Model Revamp
We've given Vanguard's character models a makeover, beefing up the men while enhancing the feminine features of our females. Not only have their bodies been given a revamp, but most of the facial customization that was available at launch has returned! You'll now have dozens of ways to make your character unique in appearance, all while increasing performance!

Players will also have more options when it comes to armor. Each race now comes equipped with their own unique undergarments, which will be an optional replacement to the traditional clothing that currently covers the bare models.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is an MMO that could have become so much more. With the funding Sigil received to create Vanguard, the game simply couldn't fail according to speculators. They were wrong. This is a perfect example (and it's used often) of how money can't buy you everything.

There were so many that wanted Vanguard to be their new MMO, but most realized very early that Vanguard would never become what Sigil had promised. Somewhere and somehow, something went terribly wrong.

Now, several patches later and with SOE in charge, Vanguard is a bit better. There's been numerous optimizations done so the game actually run decently. Sadly, there's not that many players left and the development team is small.

The video below is made by fans and it's really bringing forth the good sides of Vanguard, definitely a must see.

VANGUARD: SAGA OF HEROES® GAME UPDATE #5

WHAT: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes®, fifth game update titled “Telon Rides On”, introduces unique land mounts customized for each one of the player races in the game. With the launch of the game update, a citizen’s favor can now earn them great rewards and is of high importance to those throughout Telon. Residents of each town are seeking adventurers to help spread the city’s influence across the land. Those heroic enough can don the banner of the city they favor and battle against the enemies of Telon.

    “Telon Rides On” features include:

Racial Mounts: Unique land mounts are available for players between levels 30-50 for those willing to earn their mounted reward. Racial land mounts can be obtained through a series of faction based quests starting in each race’s home town.

Citizen Favor: By seeking out a faction registrar players can don the banner of a city, gaining favor with its citizens, while battling the enemies of Telon. Each creature slain will offer a chance to receive tokens bearing the symbol of the registered city and can be returned to the city in exchange for citizen faction recognition which can then be used towards valuable rewards.

Class Updates: Blood Mages and Psionicists received updates aligning them with their intended vision in terms of power and utility.

Anti-Hitching: A new anti-hitching code is being introduced to help increase the performance of Vanguard, leading to a better game play experience.

    The Legend of Trengal Keep

Posted May 05, 2008 by Zyuu
Filed in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

A long and very details article which showcase Trengal Keep and the legend about it has been published on Vanguard Players.

Rotting away on the expansive Thestran continent, lays the crumbling remains of a once great manor that served as a home to the human kings of Thestra. Time and trouble have etched away at this massive castle, creating a dangerous breeding ground for evil entities, Orcs, and Goblins, who now use the rubble as their fortress, hiding away long lost secrets.

In the misty skies above the ruins, floats an eerie meteor that some say contains the power to control the many Orcish minions who now live amongst the debris. Those who have ventured into the ghost of a castle have returned silenced from fear, or have never returned at all, only adding to the secrets that surround these mysterious ruins.

It will take a group of Heroes to unlock the secrets that are so carefully contained within the ruined walls of Trengal Keep. So find a few of your must trusted adventuring friends, and prepare to ride into the heart of Thestra to begin your quests for truth and treasure!

Sage Maenor stands guard at Trengal Watch. It was within his elite brotherhood that the secret of the shrine was entrusted to. After the release of Koth Teros and his many crystal and mist minions, the Watch now serves to battle these creatures who have invaded the minds and bodies of the orcs and goblins that now use the Ruins of Trengal Keep as their battleground and fortress.

As the meteors rained down upon the once expansive castle, many of the creatures who lurked its grounds are now affected by the eerie crystal deposits, and pose a great threat to the people of Thestra. Sage Maenor asks for your help in finding answers. Heroes should seek him out, not only for glory, but for the great rewards that will come to you in the end.

You can find Sage Maenor outside the walls of Trengal Watch. Within this area there are others who want your help with various tasks. You can complete a lot of these quests while working your way through the Legend of Trengal keep quest line. You can find the details of the quests here.

    Vanguard Curse Client Support Discontinued

As of the next Curse Client version, the client will no longer support data collection for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. This was a difficult decision to make, but due to the time required to continually keep the client updated to work with the Vanguard client, the costs became too great for us to support with Curse.com's current website structure.

We have also had requests from players to release the source for the Curse Client so fans of the game can maintain the Vanguard portion of it. While we appreciate the offer, and would happily do this if it were viable, we cannot release the source of the Curse Client as it opens up the possibility of hacking -- something we are adamantly against and will not open doors to.

The Vanguard database itself will remain online for at least two months, and we're working for a longer term solution to this; we realize that the database has become a destination for many Vanguard players and while the client has become impossible to realistically maintain, we would like to keep the database itself up as long as possible so that Vanguard players have a resource to turn to.

We will make sure to keep everyone updated on the state of the database as we have more information to share.

    Game Update 5 Preview

Filed in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

Vanguard Game Update 5 should be available on the Test Server after the weekend.

Hey all! You should expect to see Game Update 5 on the Test sever after the weekend! Below is an outline of the main features included in the final update – please note though that they are not all fully implemented yet. As you play through the content on the test server, please keep an eye open for any bugs and be sure to submit a "/bug" for any you find – particularly in regards to particles not displaying correctly. Thanks, and enjoy!

    Game Update #5

    • 1. Racial Mounts
    • 2. Class Updates
    • 3. Anti-Hitching
    • 4. New Particles

    Wood Elf Lesser Giant

    1. RACIAL MOUNTS

We have added a unique racial mount for each race in Vanguard! The mounts can be attained through a series of faction based quests that can be started in each race's home town. If you happen to like another race's mount better than your own though, worry not! With the appropriate faction, players will be able to complete any of the quests.

    Citizen Favor

The citizens of Telon are seeking adventurers to help spread their influence across the land. By seeking out a faction registrar you can don the banner of a city, gaining favor with its citizens while you battle their enemies. Each creature that is slain will offer a chance to receive tokens bearing the symbol of their registered city. These tokens can be returned to the city in exchange for citizen faction. Be warned that while many factions are friendly with each other, all factions have those that oppose them. Raising your faction with one city may reduce your faction with another. While you can switch factions at any time, those who are worried about becoming outlaws in certain cities should heed this warning.

Gaining faction will allow you to purchase factional rewards with the use of platinum tokens. These tokens can only be retrieved from the vilest of beings and only when you are wearing the banner of your chosen city. Those powerful enough to defeat raid NPCs will receive ancient coins which can be converted into a platinum token of any type you desire.

    Racial Mounts

With the release of the citizen favor system comes the first factional rewards -- racial land mounts! All races have been granted a unique looking mount with improved speed over other mounts in their tier. These mounts can be attained at levels 30 and 50 after you have gained the required faction and number of platinum coins. Players will be able to get any of these mounts as long as they do the work involved for their attached cities.

    More details here.

    2. CLASS UPDATES

This update we have given significant attention to three more classes. Blood Mages, Psionicists and Sorcerers have all received a lot of developer attention. Abilities that may have been broken before have been fixed, spells have been tweaked and upgraded or updated and all three classes should be more in line with their intended vision in terms of power and utility. Specific tweaks and updates will be listed in the patch notes.

    3. ANTI-HITCHING

As always, increasing performance remains a high priority for our development team. To that end, with this update we will be introducing new anti-hitching code that should have an immediate and noticeable effect.

    4. NEW PARTICLES

Sometimes, things just need to look cooler. That was the case for many adventuring class spells and/or abilities. Blood Mages, Disciples, Dread Knights, Druids, Necromancers and Sorcerers all received new an improved particle effects.

There's a new article on the official Vanguard website that describes how to obtain the key needed to enter Lord Tsang's Tomb.

The Kojan continent is ripe with things for young adventurers to do. From your first steps on the sands of the Tanvu shores, you're already learning the ways of the Lao'Jin Knight, harnessing the power of Jin in both battle and life.

The Tomb of Lord Tsang is hidden within the north eastern hills of Kojan. Its stone walls were erected ages ago around a dense forest, and are still guarded by an army of defenders who keep an eye out and a blade ready for trespassers. If you're in the 18-22 level range, and have an eerie urge to go tomb raiding for legendary treasure, then Tsang's is a place you need to explore!

Big news for Vanguard players -- especially those that are level 50. Ancient Port Warehouse is now open on the Test Server for all guilds to attempt. This brand-new dungeon is the first raid content of its kind being introduced in Vanguard. The dungeon will require the completion of an access quest to enter, so be sure to check it out if you'd like to get a jump on this when it goes live!

Character copies to the Test Server are allowed, but are currently disabled, so be sure to keep an eye out on when they're available again if you haven't yet copied a character over. This is no doubt an exciting time for guilds in Vanguard, so pay close watch on the Test Server Forum for information on the testing process, as well as feedback on Ancient Port Warehouse.

    Game Update 3 - Phase 1 Notes

Posted Oct 16, 2007 by Kody
Filed in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

The latest Vanguard patch is now live today. This is the first in a series of patches to roll out Game Update #3. So, technically this is called "Update 3 - Phase 1," as the patch notes state. Speaking of the patch notes, you can read them below, in all their patchy goodness.

    1. Ksaravi Gulch

The low to high teens adventuring area of Ksaravi Gulch in Qalia has been revamped. It now features new group and solo content, with many quest lines for either type of player as well as an enhanced storyline, additional items and the chance to fly into battle on an elite back wyvern mount.
3 all new solo quest lines offering 20 new quests
12 group quests in an exciting new group quest line
Fly into battle on an elite black wyvern
All-new rewards, like Coronarian Gloves and Ice Ember poison

    2. Guild Hall Trophies

The Guild Hall Trophy item can now be placed in a house or any Guild Headquarters. The buff from the trophy will be shared by all guild members that are online. There will be three trophies to choose from (one for each of Vanguard’s icon characters).
The Guild Hall Trophy can only be picked up by the person who placed it.

    3. Player Housing / Guild Housing

All player housing areas should have a crafting center within one chunk's distance. You will find crafting trainers, vendors, taskmasters, and stations. In addition, a few select areas (including all of the islands) have had flying mount renters added.

In addition to that, Guildhall adventuring drops should now be much easier to obtain. Mnalus Fungus will now rarely drop off most mobs in Lair of the Mnalus. Mummy Dust will now rarely drop off most mobs in Nusibe. Fiend Blood will now rarely drop off most mobs in Rhaz Inkur.

    4. Optimizations / Bug Fixes

Fixing bugs and optimizing the game have been a big priority for us. We’ve put in fixes for over a dozen high-profile client crash fixes as well as hundreds of bugs. We’ve fixed a major memory leak and even made some sound optimizations. On the whole, a lot of players’ performance should improve with this patch.

With this patch, we’re also laying the groundwork to start implementing optimized NPC models. You should see them start showing up in the near future (likely in Qalia first).

    5. Spam Filter

Ask, and you shall receive! It's been in the works for quite some time, but Game Update 3 unleashes the code that should help eliminate a lot of the spam you may receive in-game. The code works similarly to those featured in other SOE games, in that it automatically filters messages flagged as spam, and reports them to Customer Service.

    6. Patch Notes

    GAMEPLAY

    GENERAL

    • You can now request that your character be copied (not moved, just copied) to the test server by using the new /copycharacter command. This command toggles your request to be copied on and off. Please type, "/help copycharacter" for more info.
    • You may no longer hit yourself with targeted AEs.
    • The LFG flag will now default to off if not found in the settings file.
    • Brokers - The maximum items that a player may have on the broker has been increased to 15. This change was made due to player feedback. Rejoice!
    • To avoid conflict with a diplomacy title, the Squire title given by the Title Commissioner has been replaced with Attendant.
    • You can now swap items in your bank, even if the bank is full.
    • Players' Locations for Renton Keep are now categorized correctly.
    • Items that are not stacks no longer bring up the stack "Split" window, they just get dragged as if you didn't hold down a key to try to split them.
    • Holding down the CTRL key and dragging on a stacked item will now pull one off the stack instead of bringing up the "Split" window. You can still bring up the "Split" window to split a stack of items, but you now hold down the SHIFT key while dragging the item instead of CTRL like you used to. This was changed to make it a bit more consistent with how other games work, so it is a bit less confusing to new players.
    • Hobgoblin eyes, claws, and belts are no longer considered valuable on Telon. However, hobgoblin trinkets, pants, and chests can be sold for a decent price.
    • The edit box for the various "Split" windows should now work properly.
    • Right-clicking and holding (dragging) in the main/text area of the chat window will no longer drag the chat window, it will allow mouselook instead. This should greatly reduce accidentally dragging the chat window when you really just wanted to start mouselooking.
    • You should now get a feather fall type buff applied to you anytime you get dismounted from a flying mount, unless you are only a few meters from the ground when you get dismounted. This includes crashing while on a flying mount, so the days of falling to your death because you lost your flying mount should be over.
    • All player housing areas should have a crafting center within one chunk's distance. You will find crafting trainers, vendors, taskmasters, and stations. In addition, a few select areas (including all of the islands) have had flying mount renters added.
    • Some NPCs have learned how to see through stealth, beware! Please also note that this change does not affect stalking.
    • Guildhall adventuring drops should now be much easier to obtain. Mnalus Fungus will now rarely drop off most mobs in Lair of the Mnalus. Mummy Dust will now rarely drop off most mobs in Nusibe. Fiend Blood will now rarely drop off most mobs in Rhaz Inkur.

Drop rates vary based on type of information, continent, and the quality of the information.
    • It is now possible to purchase House Thistle Fencing Gloves. Jam will no longer withhold his goods!
    • Bartenders across Telon now have the four new newbie line comments in their loot tables. Only tier 1 and 2 parleys will yield these comments, with tier 1 having the highest drop rate. Unlike the cards in the newbie line, these cards are not soulbound and thus tradable.

    • In the Ca'ial Brael writ "Cut Down the Ra'Jin" you should no longer be able to use the Yukionna Rod on the Yukionna until the proper time, and you cannot talk to Governor Jalixfin or General Zewg until you have used the rod on the Yukionna.
    • Bartender parleys have had their prereqs altered to make them display more logically and to prevent overlap.
    • Diplomacy "Land" objects (acquired from Noble Houses in New Targonor) now fit in Diplomacy containers.
    • All Diplomacy Neck items now will fit in Diplomacy containers (like the valise or hold-all).
    • Drop rates for Evidence in high in-tier Civic parleys have been increased by 40% above it's original drop rate.
    • NPCs in Civic Diplomacy should no longer belong to overlapping loot tables for Information, especially NPCs of levels 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50.
    • Tier 4 Diplomacy Information turn-ins now can give "Radiant Prestigious Baubles." These baubles, when right-clicked, give 10 Prestige faction for the area and devolve into a Shiny Prestigious Bauble.
    • Some New Targonor Diplomacy House quests have had their rewards altered to account for the new Bursars for each House.
    • The shiny prestigious bauble requirement in all 3 Diplomacy guild hall quests has been reduced from 75 to 50.
    • House Bursars will no longer attempt to hawk titles to players, which they have already purchased.
    • Rank Dealings in Veskal's Exchange no longer requires Merchant Presence to complete. Ramoak the vendor has taken holy vows and is now a Clergy.
    • The missing nine NPC race-specific Diplomacy cards have been found and stuck to the proper NPCs. Let the hunt continue!

    • Vsurog Moor - Issues with various armor quest drops in Vsurog Moor have been addressed.
    • Ksaravi Gulch - In the war between Khal and the Ksaravi, it has become apparent to both sides that force of arms is not enough. To this end, the Ksaravi have turned to the creation of vile magical toxins and diseases with which they plan to afflict the good people of Khal. In the aftermath, they intend to claim the city as their own. In order to put an end to the Ksaravi taint, you will need the aid of Curate Sabha and Brumdul Svat, priests of the White Coronaria, a sect that worships Sahari Jeddai, the Qaliathari aspect of Gloriann. Fighting into the gulch is not an easy affair, even with the magic of the White Coronaria, and time is of the essence. Yet, hope rides on black wings, and Captain Venir Isthir of the elite Black Wyvern Riders offers an answer. CODING

    GENERAL

    • Fix for a memory leak that had been affecting many players
    • Guilds are now able to mark themselves as recruiting new members, add a description of their guild, and mark members as guild recruiters. Players that want to find a guild to join can look through the list of guilds that are recruiting in the new "Guilds LFM" tab within the "Guild" tab of the social window. Clicking on a guild in the list to the left of this new tab will show the selected guild's description and a list of recruiters from that guild which can be contacted for more info about the guild.
    • PVP: New resist system for detrimental utility spells (Roots, stuns, snares, mezzes, debuffs)! Resistances matter much more now, and utility spells will be resisted more frequently, especially against players with high resists. Damaging spells still use the old resist formulas.
    • Fix for a bug that enabled some players to level to 51
    • Fix for another crash issue
    • Several performance enhancements have been added to increase frame rate in crowded areas
    • Fixed an issue where you could go over the 30plat cap when trading if you had money in the bank resulting in losing money the next time you looted something.
    • Fixed an issue with the Last Online time being incorrect on the friends window.
    • You can no longer receive group or brotherhood invites from someone on your ignore list.
    • You will now see loot links when you loot an item, and when a loot master gives loot to another player.
    • You will now always see when a group member loots an item even if they are far away.
    • Fixed some issues with NPC hate lists that would cause a person who had lower health to generate large amounts of hate.
    • Made it so for every meter a player is away from a target, they will now generate ½% less hate up to 20% for all damage done.
    • You will no longer be able to /giveplayerloot someone an item from a raid NPC who wasn’t part of the raid battle.
    • You can now swap equipped items with items in your inventory (or bags) even if your inventory and bags are full, provided it is a one for one swap and doesn't require removing two equipped items (such as swapping out sword and shield for a two handed weapon).
    • Diplomacy cards should no longer always show as unusable when in your inventory.
    • Made further adjustments to help with the display of invisible items in guild halls and the houses near guild halls.
    • You can now right click on a stack of items that have charges without expending the charges of the entire stack, so items like “Imperial Darkbrew” can now be safely used while stacked.
    • Thrown items now display class requirements/restrictions in the item info tooltip.
    • Quests that require less than a full stack of items to complete will now only take the exact number they need, instead of taking an entire stack. So a quest that needed 35 of a certain item, will no longer take 40 if you have two stacks of 20.
    • While testing raid functionality on the test server, several optimization issues were discovered and corrected for both the servers and client. From UI optimizations on the client to server processing of large groups of combatants, there should be a noticeable performance improvement in all aspects of the game

    CLIENT

    • When placing a crafting or harvesting tool in a toolbelt it will now bring up the Bind of Equip confirm when necessary.

    ENGINE

    • There is a new setting in the Audio tab called Distance. This value is used to calculate how far away a sound will play. If you have a single-core CPU you may see some performance increase from lowering this value. If you desire to hear sounds from further away, you can raise this value, though it may effect performance.

    GRAPHICS

    • Added a new slider bar to toggle the scale of the scrolling combat text.
    • The particle throttle sliders in the Settings panel will now properly throttle the particle effects correctly by type. Sliding these down will process fewer particles, and yield some performance gains, especially in combat - and even more so in raids where you have 12-18 players playing particle effects.

    SERVER

    • Guild Trophy buffs are now in. The guild trophy buff will only be applied to the character if the items is placed in a guild headquarters.
    • NPCs will no longer open locked doors. This fixes an exploit where you could get an aggro NPC on the far side of a locked door to open the door for you when it moved to attack you.
    • NPC / Resource / Corpse interaction ranges should now be more correct and scale-independent (so it's no longer difficult to be within the ability range of giants)!

Vanguard Dev Team moves to San Diego

Well, it was only a matter of time before this happened. The game does belong to SoE, after all, so it only makes sense to have the developers all in one central location with other SoE teams for collaborative and communication reasons.

That said, it also appears that Dave "Hasium" Gilbertson is no longer the game's Producer; Thom Terrazas - previously the Producer of PlanetSide - has taken over the reigns.

The Vanguard development team is relocating its offices to SOE's San Diego campus effective Monday, October 15, 2007. As part of the integration into the SOE family, the developers will benefit from having access to shared resources and the combined experience of SOE's other game development teams. As a result, not every Carlsbad employee has been invited to stay with the development team.

Under the new leadership of Thom Terrazas, an eight-year SOE veteran, SOE will continue its commitment to Vanguard and its players. The remaining Vanguard team members are going to continue to deliver on an exceptional product. They are a creative force in the online games space and we look forward to continuing the vision for Vanguard and to continue to deliver groundbreaking game play. SOE remains committed to seeing Vanguard grow and prosper.

Silas "Cylus" Morse to leave Sigil/SoE Friday

It's never good to see a game developer leave a company - especially one as well-known to the game's community as Cylus is to Vanguard players.

For those unfamiliar with him, he was the game's item designer and has designed many of the items in the game thus far. Just 2 weeks ago, Cylus was part of the Getting to Know the Vanguard Team series, and now on the Fires of Heaven forums he's announced his resignation from Sigil/SoE as of tomorrow.

Cylus has clearly been under a lot of stress during his time at Sigil, as his pot shot at Nino proves, but Nino responded calmly to it, understanding that there's a lot of pent up frustration, no doubt shared by many former and current members of the Vanguard team.

It's definitely a sad day for the Vanguard team; Cylus did an excellent job in his position as part of SoE.

Guildhall Plots are Ready for Occupation

So with September 5th Hotfix brought an update to allow Guilds to purchase and Guildhall Plot and start there construction. Within hours of the patch being live our guild have managed to get an plot and the construction has started.

Along with this update the long awaited Brotherhood system has gone live. I do think this system will work well with a online buddy that has a character at about the same level as you. You both will be able to work away, but if one of you is not on for some reason, that players character should not fall too far behind.

Also the "/switchserver" command has been added. Allowing you to make a one off free server transfer request. I am not sure how long the command is active for, but I do hope they will give us a good while to try out the new servers. I beleive that the current level of population will drop again as a number of players will have come back just to see the new changes and then fade away again. Meaning that the current level may mean you will want to transfer as it get quite again, or even transfer as you don't like all these players in the way.

    Server Merge

    Game Update #2 Now Live

These are fairly huge patch notes for Vanguard's second game update, surprisingly called "Game Update 2"... or maybe not surprisingly! At any rate, the patch introduces quest a few new features to the game, as well as a plethora of class and zone changes, including Diplomacy being moved from a skill-based system to a level-based system - similar to how EverQuest II uses level-based systems for its crafting and guild leveling.

There are some technical issues with the patch including client crashes, so be warned. However, SOE is no doubt on the case and working on fixes for any issues that have cropped up due to this update.

And now, on to the patch notes!

Vanguard Build 1871 Patch Notes 08/16/2007

    GAME UPDATE 2

    1. Guild Halls
    2. The Brotherhood System
    3. Bind on Equip
    4. LFG Improvements
    5. Rest Experience
    6. Level Based Diplomacy
    7. Diplomacy UI
    8. Deconstruction

    11. Crash Fixes & Optimizations
    12. Quest Journal & Quest Tracking
    13. Item UI
    14. Scrolling Combat Text
    15. Additional Patch Notes

    1. Guild Halls

NOTE: Guild Halls will not be available until AFTER the server merges, to avoid plot conflicts.

Guild Hall quests are now available! They operate in a similar manner to regular housing in regards to overall construction but require new components. Building a Guild Hall will require efforts from all three spheres of Vanguard.

Guild Hall plots will not be available for purchase until after the server merge. But the quests will be live so you can begin acquiring the resources necessary to construct one. The server merge is expected to happen a week after GU2 goes live.

Crafters will need to learn brand new recipes for all three continents. There are new quests for different key parts of the Guild Hall structure, the majority which are for the mineralogist specialization. Other crafting trades will have some component recipes as well though.

Among the new recipes, a special mortar assembly recipe is introduced. This recipe requires components obtained from high level adventuring areas. Fetching these items will be very dangerous. You will want to bring a group.

Diplomats will now be needed to obtain permissions to purchase the Guild Hall plot. Without the correct documents obtained from the local government, the guild leader will not be allowed to purchase the plot. Obtaining this documentation will not be a simple task.

Finishing construction of a Guild Hall will take much more investment than building a smaller house due to the sheer size and space. However, once completed, they will be a great place for your guild to gather and store treasures, in addition to being a mark of pride for your group!

    • Must be Guild Leader to purchase
    • Must form a full group of guild members and have them be in the same zone. (6)
    • Must have completed the diplomacy quest and have the diplomacy item in the Guild Leaders inventory.
    • Purchasing the plot will expend the diplomacy item.

    2. The Brotherhood System

NOTE: The Brotherhood System will not be available until AFTER the server merges.

Brotherhoods are a method for you and your friends to gain experience for each other, even when some of you are offline.

Brotherhoods will not be going live until after the server merge. The server merge is expected to happen a week after GU2 goes live.

    Features

    • All experience you earn is split amongst the members of the fellowship, even members who are offline.
    • When you are in debt or have lost experience, your experience will be devoted to repaying your debt/loss before you resume contributing to the brotherhood.
    • Brotherhoods are completely independent from groups; you can be a member of both at the same time.

    Limitations

    • Brotherhoods can have a maximum of six members.
    • You must be within five levels of every member of the brotherhood in order to join.
    • You must be within a few meters distance to invite a player to your brotherhood.
    • If you leave your brotherhood or are removed, you may not join another one for four hours of online played time.
    • Members who are offline do not receive their experience until they log on. (Be careful when using the system to level up rarely-played characters, as their skills will fall behind, thus they will be very weak for their levels!)

    Getting Started

Interested in creating a brotherhood? Simply target your friend, right click your defensive target window, and select "Invite to Brotherhood." You may then administer the brotherhood from the social window (default key 'O') "Brotherhood" tab.

    3. Bind on Equip

All equipable items that were bindable are now either bind on equip or bind on pickup, with the majority of the items being bind on equip. Here is a quick overview of the affected items:

    • All equipable items that were bindable are now BOE or BOP
    • All uncommon and common items are BOE
    • All rare world loot items are BOE
    • All rare (and higher) items that are not on world loot tables are BOP
    • All containers are BOE
    • Quest rewards will remain soulbound as they were before this change
    • Any rare items already in the world, that would have become BoP and thus soulbound, will instead become BoE. All new items that drop will be BoP. This will prevent cases where characters could be stuck with items becoming Soulbound that they can’t use.

This change was made for a variety of reasons.

    • Removes items from the functional trade economy after the item has been used once.
    • Helps regulate economy as items are effectively removed from trade.
    • Changes to the deconstruction system allows all players regardless of sphere to feel a “gain” even after they have upgraded items in a slot, we did not feel that binding an item to our customers and presenting them with nothing back for its value was worthwhile.

    4. LFG Improvements

There is a new LFG button that is located in the group area of the UI (left side of the screen), which brings up the new looking for group and looking for more tabs of the social window. This will disappear once a player joins someone else’s group, but it will remain for group leaders until their group is full. It automatically brings up the LFG tab for non-grouped players, and the LFM tab for group leaders.

The looking for group tab allows players to set which dungeon(s) or quest(s) (from the list of quests that the player currently has in their journal) they would like to work on, and then see a list of other individual players or group leaders. Players and group leaders in the list will be sorted based on their level relationship to you and how closely their preferences match yours, so those that are near your level and are looking to do the same dungeon or quest will be sorted highest in the list. The LFG tab also includes the option to auto accept group invites. If the player doesn’t turn on that feature, they will see the name, level, and class of the group leader and the name, level and class of each of the current group’s members when they are sent a group invite, at which time they can choose to accept or deny the invite as normal. If a player selects a group leader in the search list, they will get the new option to send a request to join that leader’s group, at which point the group leader will see the name, level, and class of the player that is requesting to join the group and the leader can choose to deny the request, or to send a group invite to that player.

The looking for more tab works like the LFG tab, except that it lets a group leader select the archetype(s) and/or class(es) that the group is looking for, in addition to setting the dungeon(s) and/or quest(s) that the group would like to find more members to do.

Both the LFG and LFM lists show individuals looking for a group and group leaders looking for more members. Hovering the mouse over a player in the list will show more info about them, such as what dungeons or quests they prefer, and if it is a group leader the tooltip will also show what archetypes or classes the group prefers and a list of all of the current group members’ names, levels, and classes.

    5. Rest Experience

Heroes may now rest in Vanguard! Resting increases the rate at which a hero will gain adventuring, crafting, or diplomacy experience. As the hero gains experience in a particular sphere, rest of that type is exhausted. Rest for each sphere is separate, and is designated by a blue bar on the character sheet of the corresponding sphere. For adventurers, rest is also displayed on the experience bar. Camping allows a hero to rest, occurring more rapidly at outposts. A hero may tell if he or she is at an outpost when a tower icon appears next to his or her class icon.

    6. Level Based Diplomacy

Diplomacy is moving from a “skill-based” (1-500) system to a “level-based” (1-50) system. In this changeover, your skill will be automatically converted to level. For instance, if you were skill 120, you would now be level 12. If you were 123, then you would be level 12 with 6 bubbles filled. NPCs and items are also converted as well, as will be the difficulty of conversations. This move allows us to fit Diplomacy more easily into creating content for the game, greatly speeding up the way we make content and reducing the places in which bugs can crop up – while also increasing the opportunities for sphere interdependence.

    7. Diplomacy UI

Several elements in the Diplomacy user interface have been made easier to understand and more intuitive. For instance:

    • Double-clicking cards in your Diplomacy strategy during a parlay will now play them as if you selected the card and clicked the "Speak" button.
    • Cards in your Diplomacy strategy are now dimmed when unusable because they are still refreshing.

    8. Deconstruction

Deconstruction is no longer process oriented. Deconstruction kits will be sold by vendors for ten silver and each kit will have ten charges. Right-clicking the kit and then clicking on the item you wish to deconstruct will give you the option to convert the item to a resource or a dust.

    • Common items should convert into attuning dusts or common resources
    • Uncommon items should convert into resonance dusts, common resources and sometimes a rare resource
    • Rare items should convert into focusing dusts, rare resources and sometimes ultra rare resources
    • Anything above rare follows the same rules as rare

    9. Item Level Requirements

The rules for who can equip items has been streamlined, equipment expertise was too confusing for many players. This puts a stronger emphasis on gaining levels to allow players to equip more powerful items. It also restores demand for items that were trivialized due to the varied range of Equipment Expertise per item type and slot.

    • Items in Vanguard now have a minimum level required to equip.
    • The minimum level required to equip items is now displayed on items, so players do not need to do math to figure it out.
    • This only applies to items that are equipped on the adventuring, crafting, or diplomacy tabs of the character sheets. Mounts are excluded from this limitation.
    • Equipment Expertise has been removed from the game.
    • Any items you were wearing that are higher then 5 levels above you will not be removed until you remove them yourself.
    • When GU2 goes live, crafting tools in your crafting tool bag will become soulbound when you use them in the crafting process. In the future, we will have a BOE confirmation when placing a crafting tool in an equipped crafting tool bag.

    10. PvP Bug Fixes

We spent some time fixing some of the more egregious bugs regarding PvP – here are the highlights:

    • Abomination grafts that produce a damaging effect has been reduced against players.
    • Bards can no longer pulse an invis effect while in combat.
    • See invis now functions properly – you can no longer see other players that are invis if you don’t have a see invis buff unless they are in your group.
    • There is a new 40% damage cap on any single ability in PvP.
    • Players may now rotate while rooted.
    • Pets were previously hitting for full damage in PvP. They have now received a half-damage modifier to be in tune with the half-damage modifier applied to other damage types.
    • You can now use abilities on pets in PvP. Previously, they would be immune to many types of abilities they shouldn’t have been immune to.
    • In PvP, graft abilities for necromancer abomination pets only now do 33% of their previous damage.
    • Bards can no longer pulse an invis effect while in combat. This change results in attackers not losing their target in PvP combat with a bard that is singing a song with an invis component.
    • In PvP see invis now functions properly - you can no longer see other players that are invis if you don't have a see invis buff unless they are in your group.
    • In PvP, any single ability can not exceed 40% of the target players maximum health.
    • Players may now rotate while rooted. This change will also work for roots in PvE as well as PvP.
    • Pets were previously hitting for full damage in PvP. They have now received a half-damage modifier to be in tune with the half-damage modifier applied to other damage types. This means that pet damage now does 50% of their previous damage against player targets in PvP.
    • You can now use abilities on pets in PvP. Previously, they would be immune to many types of abilities they shouldn't have been immune to. This means that abilities that contain a stun, root, mez, ect will now affect a player's pet in Pvp.

    11. Crash Fixes & Optimizations

We have put a lot of effort into both improving game performance and eliminating bugs that cause crashes. In addition to all the optimization notes in the patch notes below, highlights include:

    • Reduced the frequency of garbage purges. They will now only occur once your client has under 100MB of system memory free, and there is more "stuff" to purge. This will reduce the amount of "hitching flashes" to only the times when you really need them to prevent the game from crashing.
    • Textures should now take up a great deal less system memory, reducing the number of crashes from out of memory errors substantially.

    12. Quest Journal & Quest Tracking

Some improvements have been made to the Quest Tracker. They include:

    • The layout of the quest journal window has been changed to allow more info to be shown at once, your list of quests is on the left, and the info for the quest you have selected is on the right, making for less scrolling.
    • The Work Orders and Locations tabs have also been changed to the new layout.
    • A new button, "Auto-track" has also been added which brings up a new window to set options for the new auto quest tracker feature.
    • Auto quest tracking is on by default and in its default state, quests that you accept or quests that are updated during your play session will appear automatically in the Quest Tracker, but will be removed from the Tracker after several minutes if you don’t do anything to progress that quest (complete quest objectives).

    13. Item UI

Keeping in line with our efforts to make Vanguard easier to understand and more intuitive, we have made some improvements to item UI. They include:

    • Items that contain an associated ability should now display the description of that ability, if a description is available.
    • Items with offensive and defensive “Rating” modifiers, in addition to the actual Rating, will now display a percentage for that specific modifier against an equal level NPC. This addition will add some clarity to the previously confusing Rating system.
    • Items will now display the actual percentage that an attached “Chance on Hit:” proc will activate.

    14. Scrolling Combat Text

You can now switch on scrolling combat text in your Settings panel. There are many display options for the text, including:

    • The Scrolling combat text will speed up and slow down depending on how fast text enters the world.
    • New Slider bar to toggle transparency of the scrolling combat text. This will allow players to choose settings where the text is less obtrusive, while other players can chose a setting so they can achieve maximum visibility of the text.
    • New option to use multiple layers of scrolling combat text (in order to place crits and more important text on one layer and less important information in another layer with a more transparent look).
    • New option to use multi-column scrolling combat text. This will slow down the necessary movement of text (since more text can sit on one line). This setting will be very useful in raids when there is a lot of damage spam.

    15. Additional Patch Notes

    • Crouch is now mapped by default to shift-X (for new users or people that have deleted their "user.ini" file in their bin directory), but existing users will need to map it manually by going into the settings window "Controls" tab, finding "Crouch" in the list and then clicking the button next to it in order to set the key bind. Crouch is useful for getting large races, such as the Lesser Giants, through smaller races' doorways.
    • Player to player trades now check to make sure the amount of money being traded won't exceed the coin limit of the player receiving the money. If the amount being given does exceed the coin limit, both parties in the trade will receive an error stating that the coin limit would be exceeded and the players will be able to edit the amount of money being offered and try again.
    • Level appropriate dungeons are now shown on the map, and display the level range after the name of the dungeon.

    • The LFG system has been revamped. It is our hope that the new system is easier to use and more useful. “I think this is it, Master,” whispered Bakijar, “the lost palace you have sought out for so long.” Bakijar was barely able to contain his excitement, perhaps because his master had vowed not to feed him until the palace’s treasure was discovered.

“Keep your voice down,” Azzad shushed. “We do not yet know what we have stumbled upon...” Azzad continued under his breath, “…or what may be waiting for us within.”

Azzad shook the thought from his mind and motioned to the sandstone structure hidden just beneath the dunes. “I entrusted Alaqua to find worthy people to help us excavate. They should be here by morning at the latest.” Azzad knelt to examine the few carvings that were visible, and blew some dust away for a clearer look.

Azzad traced the symbols with his finger. ”But by the looks of it, I fear that this is not the lost palace at all.” His brows knit in concentration as he struggled to translate the ancient symbols. “This may be, instead, a place that is said to exist only in legends.”

Azzad rose to his feet, dusting off his hands and knees. “Tell me, Bakijar, are you familiar with the tragic tale of Kall’Raa, the Muse?”

“No, Master?” Bakijar’s voice rose with curiosity.

“Well,” Azzad smiled, “It is said to have started when Finch, the god of Mischief….”

“Master,” interrupted Bakijar, ”someone is coming!”

Azzad turned to look in the direction Bakijar was pointing, and squinted into the night. “It is surely a worker Alaqua hired to help us excavate. It seems you will have to hear the tale of Kall’Raa some other time.”

Can Azzad and Bakijar trust Alaqua? What has been discovered in Razad? What is the story of Kall’Raa? Player’s level 41-45 can to find the answers to these questions in the village of Razad

Vanguard gets a new Community Manager

Michelle Butler has seemingly moved on to a new project at SOE per her front page update, being replaced by Julie "Ellyra" who was previously working as an intern at SOE.

I've been gaming for quite some time. My first taste came back in 1994 or so when I found myself addicted to a text game called ‘Legends.' The BBS I played on supported a dozen players, and wiped itself once a week. I was hooked from day one. From there I went on to play Doom on a BBS called H2H. As for MMO's, I've played a lot of what's currently out there, some more than others; EQ, EQII, WoW, LoTRo, and of course, Vanguard, to name a few.

A few personal facts you may find interesting: My main character was a Shaman, but I've recently been spending more time playing my Dread Knight. I've toyed around with a Blood Mage, and dabbled in Diplomacy. Also, I have a tattoo on my left shoulder which says "Gold Spammers FTS." (Okay, not yet, but I truly believe our world, and the world of Telon, would be a much better place without gold spammers!)

Julie seems to have a rich past of MMO experience, playing many of the recent games and even some of the older. If you're interested in welcoming her, head over to the VG forum post about her joining the Vanguard Community team.

Update: Michelle Butler has moved on to become the Community Manager of EverQuest Online Adventures.
