World of Warcraft e-sport

ESWC 2007 - Millenium vs Nihilum

This match was organized by Blizzard as the first World of Warcraft e-sport representation in France. In order to make it successful Blizzard gave a lot of free entry tickets with contest over fansites like JeuxOnline or Millenium website.

However, the match was quite disappointing because there was too much level difference between the two teams. Millenium's players are doing PvP on World of Warcraft since the release and have a large experience of Arena whereas Nihilum guys just started Arenas after they cleared the actual PvE content. It results of an inintersting 5-0.

Also, the organisation was not what we would have expected to be. The matchs started about 30 minutes later the date they were announced. We could not see anything of the fight because of a spectator mode which is so bad and the people moving around the camera was like playing with it instead of taking the best spots to show the match. The commentator did not know the game enough to explain what was going on, it went too fast for him, and on the first match, he switched both teams, saying Nihilum was winning instead of Millenium. And to finish, the coverage was really bad, no video of the 4 latest matchs were recorded, and online there was only a poor streaming as the only way to follow the event.

I really hope Blizzard is going to improve their e-sport part of the game. I may go to the WSVG in London with a 3v3 team. See you there !

world of warcraft wasn't designed to be a competitive game.

That summs it up pretty nicely. But I don't doubt WoW won't be doing bad as an esport because its such a popular game

I think it's pretty short-sighted to say it wasn't designed to be a competitive game. Everything about it is competitive. Even the PvE can be competitive(though it'll never be at the level it was with EverQuest due to instancing).

So the one who spent the most time grinding to level 70 and then doing it again afterwards to get uber items is being competitive ? Common, the game was never designed to reward those with skill as much as those who spent a shitload of their time grinding. It was designed with character persistancy in mind (leveling and getting items = addictiviness), which rewards those who get to level 70 first.
After that, those who get the uber item first.. etc.

On the other hand, its got very simple gameplay (thats one of the key of WoW's success), but complex gameplay mechanics.
There's alot of stuff that goes on the server side when you press certain spells in a certain order, but the actual effort is nothing (pressing those keys in certain orders). Sure, there is pre-battle planning and designing various team builds and tactics, even some improvization in PvP (you can't always know what will happen), but it is nothing compared to actual competitive games like Starcraft, Warcraft, Counter Strike, Quake, Company of Heroes. Btw, those games have simple rules and mechanics, but are hard to master. Kinda like chess. And thats opposite of WoW

And you mentioned PvE... the problem with PvE is that you know exactly what you are going to face, the AI isn't too advanced and know most of the moves it will pull. The rest is a matter of coordination and figuring the right tactics. When you kill it, you got a "formula" to pwn that big monster. It can be used again by another guild (in WoW, that is)

Besides, PvE games mostly have character skill alot more important than player skill :p

edit: btw, forgot to say about all the balancing between various classes in level based games. Another reason WoW wasn't designed to be a competitive gamezor
