EA: Warhammer Won't Rival WoW

In an article published by NEXT Generation, they tell us about what the CEO (John Riccitello) of Electronic Arts said at the Willian Blair & Company's investor meeting recently. John Riccitiello say that "No, I don't think it's going to rival WoW, but no one would ever predict that. But it is a strong game that will ... get our returns for us. We're proud of it.

This has been the general idea all along, but it's nice to hear it from John himself. I'm sure there's quite a few that might leave World of Warcraft for Warhammer Online. It simply depends on many factors. WAR is a PvP oriented game, while WoW has been a PvE oriented game with PvP at the side. At least this is the impression most people get from WoW thus far, since WAR is still in closed beta with an NDA -- there's not a lot of shared information by players, we simply have to wait and see what will happen as WAR get closer to being released.

If everything goes according to their plans, WAR should be out sometime later this year.

What do you think dear reader, will WAR take a considerable amount of players away from WoW? Or does it simply cater to a different type of playerbase, which mainly play other type of MMOs? Chances are, like I previously said, that WAR will lure over "some" players from WoW, then if they stay is up to the content that exist at release, not to mention the game itself and how EA will handle customer support. All those classic things are vital. How was the support, patches and content with Dark Age of Camelot? Afterall, EA Mythic is behind WAR, so that might give an indication. I never played DAoC so I can't comment.

Definitely....WoW is over 4 years old and people are looking for the "next big thing". There are only so many hours in a day and fewer that you can spend gaming. My WoW guild is looking forward to Warhammer (just as we were looking forward to WoW when we were still playing Star Wars Galaxies): some of us continued playing SWG, some split their time between the two games and others switched completely to WoW. There are a lot of people currently playing WoW that want a grittier, more mature, less "cartoon-y" game and they are definitely going to switch to Warhammer Online.

There are somethings in WAR that WoW doesn't have...yet. Such as Sieges and RvR, but WoW's upcoming expansion will probably keep alot of WoW players on their lesh. WoW's expansion promises a new profession and a first for the game a "hero class" plus a new continent to explore: Northrend. Also WoW players will have to gain yet another ten levels to the new level cap of 80. WAR has plenty of awesome features and great fun and new ways of playing an MMO. WAR is trying to make everything go by alittle faster for example, WoW has a recipe system for professions while WAR doesn't. WAR may have alot of lures but is the worm big and juicy enough for players to bite? Possibly.

I have to agree. It's very similar to EQ and DAoC. EQ was PvE oriented and was known as being the most popular game of it's time. DAoC was a PvP oriented game that had slightly fewer people, but the people I've talked to act as if the game was basically perfect, just aged. I think WAR will do good on it's own. 700,000 beta sign ups is nothing to scoff at. At the same time, WoW will probably keep it's majority popularity because of it's current fanbase. I for one, really want a more PvP oriented game, and cannot wait for Warhammer. Although while I'm waiting for it I keep going back to WoW. BTW, I think the crafting in WAR will be better, recipe systems get really boring.

FYI Siege Warfare is supposedly a part of WotLK. Also along with destructible objects.

Yes there are but everyone knows that was a direct rip-off from WAR by WoW developers. I would suggest everyone read the WAR information again on their web site, since WAR is PVP but will have PVE content, but at least it will support the single player who wants to contribute to the end game and not necessarily have to be part of a massive guild but WAR caters for smaller guilds.

Additionally, you do not have to be hardcore PvP or PVE player to enjoy the full content of WAR.

The crafting system by WAR has really shown WoW recipe system to be grinding boring task that does not allow players to enjoy the real content of the game. Do not get me wrong, no one should just be able to get epic stuff, but having to grind so intensely in WoW is just a waste of time and effort.

I do enjoy WoW and think it is a great game and as one developer said "It is the Gold Standard of MMO' but I will predict that WAR improves on that and I look forward to its release.

@souliisoul - I thought that siege weapons were an old idea in WoW, since before the original game was released. Pretty sure siege weapons were on the PvP feature list for WoW for a long long time, pre-WAR.

War have will PvP base but lately WoW have become more PvP freindly it is no lie about with new Honored system in WoW i would say that Blizzard have lost sight on PvE and tell that WoW is a PvE game is in my eyes and ear a big fat lie from Blizzard i have been play WoW from beta and i have see all change and tbh Blizzard have really mess up honored system alot so tell me that wont lose people the will for 85 to 90% off all player in WoW are on PvP server.....

Blizzard is also know to take thing from other game and i think WotLK will be more PvP freindly and not so much PvE freindly in the end game for blizzard end game are only 3 thing to be honest it is farming rep/money, Raid and PvP it is only thing you can do in WoW

in the case of seige weapons WAR copied WoW. It is known fact that WotLK was going to be the first Xpac for WoW but at the time Blizz didn't have their servers or graphics up to date for it.
They also wanted things to be at a higher lvl for WotLK. SO we got ported to frickin space in TBC and all let down.
WotLK will bring a lot of base back to the game and a lot of ppl will be happy with it since it will have something for both hardcore players and causal.

WAR is just over Hyped it will never match AoC or WoW, to many ppl are finding out that it's no where near finished or even up to date, After being in 2 beta tests from 2007 and the last round I was hugely disappointed so i bought AoC and found it was good but soon as WotLK comes out i think I'll be playing WoW again with many old timers.

  • Thu, Jun 19 2008 12:16 AM ()

Actually, WAR takes it's siege system from Dark Age of Camelot, which came out long before WoW.

Wow is good to PVE but to resume the PvP in WoW, it's all about you, your stuff, your honnor, nothing much, Warhammer makes all level chars small or high to be important for the war, your guild take experiences, countries are ownable, there is a larger number of classes/talents and I forget lots of other nice things I enjoy discoverin while playing it. WaR won't probably replace WoW here but I think I will have both because WoW does not reach Warhammer in term of "war"

a lot of Warhammer is hype, after having played a version at games day i was unimpressed, things that where promised to be good where infact disappointing and it just felt like playing any other MMO. I think wow is going to stand the tests of time with its already dominant hold getting even stronger.

  • Thu, Jun 19 2008 12:16 AM ()

Unfortunately... Warhammer is almost 100% hype. I won't give any specifics because of NDA but its sadly just not going to cut it. WoW was amazing in beta and has always been solid. Warhammer just doesn't have that greatness. I really hope Blizzard gets some competition soon though because they make strange decisions when they have no one making them sweat a little.

WoW PvP is probably the saddest I have played to date. It is basically kiddy PvP for those that don't want to think to hard. Blizzard has dumbed it down to a pathetic level and now limits PvP players based on where PvE players are in content.

WAR's entire pull is open world, massive RvR which is probably the best PvP model I have played to date. Every day in the beta reminded me of the one-time great battles at southshore / taren mill ... except there is a purpose outside of just clashing armies.

WoW can keep the PvE players and PvP kiddies, but have no doubts that all PvP players will be giving WAR a try and I predict that the majority of them are going to make the switch.

    War=hype.
WoW=Well...Not a fan boy but wow="online history" just like EQ.For Blizzard's tech *** you assholes, the lag+server quality makes a player wanna quit mmos all together, and i`m one of the lucky ones 199-250 in 25men,maybe WAR will have it covered.Have fun.

  • Thu, Jun 19 2008 12:16 AM ()

WAR is a game that has a strong background and tries to be a med-spec req game, if they dont fail at introducing RvR the game will probably steal all the wow players who wanted more PvP and RvR in WoW and havent a good comp for AoC.

I can say War is game wich arent here to replace wow but in one way it have unique playstyle which isnt possible to feel out before some lvl 30(or in war term, rank 30). For ppl which says that they tested game on some game conference im feeling pitty cause they play maybe few min and didnt understand 90% of game and also they played unfinished characters with low lvl.
For ppl which says War copy some thing from Wow, sry guys but ill burst your bubble, War arent here to copy Wow in any way, truth is most likely Wow took alot of good sistems from
    Everquest, Ultima online and Daoc.
Mythic use thing wich they felt it had succsses in past from Daoc.
If you guys wanna proof, check UI elements in Daoc and in Everquest and them check Wow.

What Wotlk will bring us isnt some evolution in mmo game its just simple getting to
Wow game more air to live on it.
In therm economics, life cycle of Wow product is on top and now only thing wich can Blizzard do is to slow down falling from top.
Check thing in Wotlk, it will have alot good stuff but mostly taken from other games feedbacks(siege weapons, RvR part of maps, some other games skills like warlocks transforming into demon(aoc mechanism of some class), knockback skills(war, aoc) etc).
How can you know that Wow products hit top of "life cycle of product" except thing mentioned, easy youll have new "less" important thing, like enhance character customization but not better game engine more improved graphics(mostly maps made from elements of other maps), mobs which are some way similiar to old world mobs or tbc mobs, DK class which will be playable by ANY race etc.

One more little thing blizzard teams is limited by ppl and most of them are putted on some other game project(which i believe this new mmo game will be bigger hit then wow), how do i know that lets just say that i know guy wich work in company that was aproach from blizzard to take over some part of bussiness related to wow(this part you can believe or not its your free choice).
Why they dont take more ppl, question have easy answer, Blizzard DONT decide by themself, Vivendi HAVE final word.
Anyway ty for reading my post and srry for not so good english
