With the third season of Intel Extreme Masters, Warcraft 3 gets replaced by World of Warcraft. This event takes place across the world in America, Asia and Europe. The only other game being played at this world wide event is Counter Strike 1.6. Players who attend get to play on state-of-the-art Alienware computers.
The total prize money? $750,000.
Many seem shocked that Warcraft 3 get pushed aside and speculate that Blizzard must have a role in this, which is likely. Regardless, with the proper presentation and spectating done, watching Arena games are quite fun. More fun then Warcraft 3, at least in my personal opinion.
For the previous seasons of the Intel Extreme Masters the games Counter-Strike 1.6 and Warcraft 3 were the two main disciplines. For the third season we are exchanging one game. Instead of Warcraft 3, the world's most popular MMORPG, played by more than 10 million players, will be the second title: World of Warcraft. At the Blizzard and Intel Warcraft Weekend in Hamburg and at the Intel Extreme Masters at DreamHack the ESL presented two major tournaments that introduced WoW to the eSports audience. We are looking forward to see World of Warcraft as a part of the Intel Extreme Masters.
What's your thoughts on Intel Extreme Masters III going World of Warcraft? Having $750,000 total in prize money to compete for is certainly not small potatoes. Obviously it's split between the games, but how much for WoW exactly?
They've announced that further details will follow soon.
