World of Warcraft

US Gamer Becomes First World of Warcraft Millionaire

I won't link the original article because it is containing links to a website selling gold which is against Blizzard's rules. Below is the copy of this surprising article:

Whilst America is suffering an economic downturn, gas prices rise day after day and the dollar weakens under pressure, one American is going against this trend; virtually. An avid Internet gamer from Chicago IL, known only as Jake, has made history by making the largest purchase of “virtual currency” ever reported. He did so through the game World of Warcraft, purchasing 1,000,000 Gold (the game’s currency) at a cost of just over $40,000.

The exchange of “real money” for its virtual gaming equivalent, whilst an insane concept to many, is nothing new. Real-Money Trading, or RMT companies as they are better known, have been around since the early days of Ultima Online but only became newsworthy with the release of World of Warcraft. The game’s population of almost 11 million subscribers makes it a lucrative marketplace for third-party companies, with no shortage of customers and suppliers (though the majority of the industry’s “product” is sourced through China). Industry analysts have predicted the RMT market to be worth around $2 billion in 2008, with a large proportion of that coming for World of Warcraft.

Though many gaming addicts will admit to purchasing virtual currencies and services, perhaps spending as much as a couple hundred dollars at a time, one wonders why someone would spend so much money on what is essentially pixels on a computer screen.

“My friends ask me, ‘You could have bought a car, a boat or put down a deposit on a house - why waste all that money on a game?’. I don’t like cars, I get sea-sick and I already own a couple of properties of my own.”, Jake contends. “I find less sense in blowing $40,000 on a BMW - at least WoW Gold retains its value.” You can almost understand his point - almost. After all, expendable income is all about enjoyment, whether it’s expensive holidays, a luxury sports car or the ability to own (literally) your friends at your favorite game. But still…

The lucky recipients of this record order were <censored>, <censored> provider of WoW Gold, based out of <censored>. “When we saw the order request come in, we just laughed; it’s not unusual to get joke requests”, said <censored>, the Customer Service Leader managing the shift the order came in on. “But the guy persisted and provided us with a phone number that matched up with his registered address. When we realized that this might be a serious order, we took the steps to further verify Jake’s identity and the validity of his request with his bank.” Within a few days the deal was done and Jake was on his way to being what must certainly be the only World of Warcraft millionaire on the planet… though he’ll have to spread the wealth over atleast 5 characters as the currency limit for a single player (only ever acheived twice before in the game’s history) is just over 210,000 Gold.

Jake plans to gear up his characters with the best of everything the game has to offer, but he’s not forgotten his fellow guild members either. His girlfriend, also a World of Warcraft player, was pleasantly surprised when she found a 50,000 Gold 21st birthday gift from Jake in her in-game mailbox. It’s no diamond ring, but it’s pretty close in WoW!

    Holy crap.

I hardly know what to do with 1000 gold (after epic flying); what's he gonna do with a million? Of course, he may have done it just for the record. That's a good enough reason for me!

This will end up just like the guy who bought the first rogue with 2 warglaives. they will find him and take it all and close his account. How hard could that be to track?

Wow, what a tool. Here's an idea, instead of blowing all that money on a bunch of fake money, why not pay off my college debt? Ugh.

Makes you wonder: did he have an awesome gaming entertainment system BEFORE this? With that kind of money, there would be a LOT more things I would buy first!

    Just wow...

Jake, Could you send me a few thousand $'s please! not as if you can't spare it.....Say bye bye to your account, it will be gone by saturday!....or will it ^^ Perhaps he will offer to pay blizz $40,000 to keep his account open.

  • Thu, Jul 17 2008 11:03 AM ()

Now counting down just how long it'll take for this guy to get his account banned....if it hasn't been already.

If I had $40,000 to blow, I sure wouldn't blow it on WoW gold. Thats the beginning of a college trust fund for my two kids, lol. I am amazed at this, and will not be the least bit surprised if his account gets baned. WoW

lol deathdude crazy story ins't it :D I wonder how much time anywy he'll be able to keep all that money because with or without beeing in the news , blizzard is not blind to see a million gold income on a toon or even or 5 toons which are guess linked to 1 account, or he could maybe evade by having 1 wow account = 1 toon = 1x 210000 gold with several wow accounts, if he has so much money to spend in gold I bet he has also a lot to spend in accounts to hide the transaction :) anyway good luck to him I would not be in peace with its position, I prefer having my toons with several rentable proessions to make gold rather than risking real money.

considering he's going to have the wealthiest account in wow i don't think it will be hard to track. I know there are likely some that came by a ton of gold legit, but none of them went from penniless to millionaire.....what a idiot. Exactly how do you transfer that much gold without Bliz noticing? They have that retarded waiting period for auctions....lvl 1 carrying 210,000 gold might tip them off as well cuz you know the gold seller isnt going to jeopardize his farming character or account

Fast way for a ban, even if I was a IRL billionaire and actually condoned evil gold selling, I wouldn't buy that much gold since it will just get deleted. Jake is either retarded or fiction.

What an earth is the point in that. If he wanted to waste 40k well theres about 40thousand different charities he could have donated to its a hell of a lot more useful and less wastefull than spending it on gold that will go shortly because his account will be deleted. WoW policy states no real buying gold and all this publicity will only serve blizzard in tracking him down quicker and making an example out of him.
Wheres the fun in being able to buy everything u want anyway. Most of the good stuff comes from bgs and u dont need cash for them. He must be so sad and pathetic.
And if it is an advertisement for gold sellers. Then ur sick and twisted and depraved go and earn some real money and stop leeching off ppl trying to have a good time. You ruin our gaming experience by spamming trade and general chat and whispering us offering us gold we dont want because we like our accounts active and not banned.
And either way Curse is just advertising real gold selling by having this artile in even if they have blanked out the name of the company selling it.
I think this whole article should be deleted
    Shame on Curse
    Shame on all gold sellers
And if this guy Jake does exist shame on him

Could be but It does not look like because the blog I took this from does not have another post linking to the same seller website, the only post which I see having a link is a link to the auctioneeraddon.com website, any other blog post is just a few comments about wow and gold but nothing at all to promote something without any links. The fake probability is really really low.
