Woman arrested for WoW love affair

An australian woman, age 31, was arrested in the US after flying from Adelaide to Greenville, NC, to visit her online boyfriend. The Register has the following to say:

An Australian woman is facing child abduction charges in the US after trying to bring her 17-year-old World of Warcraft boyfriend back to Oz.

Tamara Broome, a 31-year-old university student, was arrested on June 26 after she flew from Adelaide to the boy's home in Greenville, North Carolina to pick up her internet beau.

Broome allegedly had an online relationship with the boy for more than a year, which began in the online game World of Warcraft. The two had also exchanged copious amounts of email and even discussed marriage.

The Azerothian love-affair has sent Broome to Pitt County Detention Centre where she will get a July 11 court date. Police have seized her laptop computer and charged Broome with attempting to abduct a child. If convicted she will face more than two years in a US jail. Broome is currently being held on a $2.35m bond.

(WoW equipment could not be seized by authorities, as it is soulbound.)

According to Australian news sources, Broome's relatives allege the teenager's parents set her up, even springing for the [air fare] to frame her.

But Pitt County Sheriff detectives call the allegations "ridiculous," claiming they will not discuss who fronted for the ticket "because that's part of the evidence, we can't get into that."

Authorities became involved when the parents reported the boy missing June 12. He was found later that day at Raleigh-Durham International Airport trying to catch a flight to Australia to see the woman. Investigators later discovered that Broome was coming to the US and apprehended her as she stepped of a train at Rocky Mount station in North Carolina.

Under North Carolina law, a minor is considered someone under the age of 18.

Besides, any WoW player could tell you in a 18/31 spread, the experience would be lousy anyway. ®

Ironically, he was old enough to have nookie with her in that state - it's just the abduction laws that apply to under 18 year olds.

that funny thing about this is that there are actually people out there that meet people from playing MMO's and actually end up dating and getting married or having kids..

I'd smack the kid around more than the woman. She's lonely and from what i can tell, fat.. i can't really blame her for grasping at anything, be it illegal or not. The kid is 17, is probably a loner in school and doesn't have alot of friends. That's just poor parenting letting your kid that involved in a game, and not encouraging more social activities.. maybe not even sports, maybe a TCG or a D&D group... something.

I'd rather have my kid rolling to see if his diplomacy check is high enough to go out with a half-orc than trying to get a girlfriend online to marry that's 14 years older than him.. AT LEAST MORE LOCAL.

The boy is sick tho. Why would he date a 31 year-old woman?.. Sick people in my opinion.

people put too much of an importance on age. 17 to 31? eck!!! 34 to 48 eh, no big deal. it 14 year age differences happen all the time in marriages but when one person is under the age of about 24 or 25 it gets to be an issue.

The age difference isn't any big deal. What is messed up is this excessively Puritanical, stick up their butts laws in this deteriorating nation that is the u.s. We go and blow innocent people to bits in other nations but its somehow OMFG a big deal when a 31 yr old tries to 'elope' or whatever with a 17 yr old. Messed up, really messed up. Any prosecutors in this case should have their heads examined..post mortem preferably

Well we are mixing up stuff here; first of all, the fact that they are WoW players doesn't matter at all, the article might aswell be called Australian Girl kidnaps a kid, since it doesn't modify the case at all, it doesn't matter where they met.

Now onto the kidnapping and "ilegal relationship"; in most Europe it is not ilegal to have a relationship with an underaged kid, the problem is sexual relationships and those have to be proven on half europe (all continental law systems, not the anglosaxon ones) for the case to be even considered.

The kidnapping as far as I can tell is that the parents saw their kid banish from night to day and thought this woman had seduced him; it's a nasty thing to put charges up against her but the truth is in some legal systems if they prove the woman seduced him and that she knew it was bad for him (being a kid) she might get in a certain amount of trouble - never jail, with the positive and negative modifications applied to the case depending on the specific circumstances she will be released.

PD: sorry for the language, a spaniard speaking here, not really loose with legal english language yet :S
