World of Warcraft

Mage PvP/Arena Video Guide with a funny twist!

Every once in a while, you'll find that you stumble upon something really awesome. A gem of it's class, so to speak. This morning was one of those moments where I was looking for something interesting and compelling to bring out into the spotlight and happened to see that FuF had uploaded a video to our Video Gallery with a different kind of title.

You see, normally, PvP videos are often a compendium of edited clips showing off big numbers and "leet skill" with some music tossed onto it with names such as "Annihilator Maximus" or "Epeen McJinglebutt's PvP Ownage". This case however, was the exact opposite; the video that for some reason drew my attention was named "I suck at PvP". I was sold and decided to take the time to see what this was all about.

I suck at PvP - by Evertras var FO_150 = { movie:"http://dev.curse-gaming.com/static/flash/flvplayer.swf", width:"625", height:"440", majorversion:"7", build:"0", bgcolor:"#FFFFFF", allowfullscreen:"true", flashvars:"file=http://videos.cursebeta.com/stream2/premium/414.flv&autostart=true" }; $("#flvplayer_150").click(function(event) { UFO.create(FO_150, "flvplayer_150"); $(this).unbind('click'); });

After watching the video, one thing was clear. Featuring not just video footage of big numbers and mass killing blows, Evertras has cleverly put a lot of work into this video -- making it more of a "How to PvP" with a great humorous twist. I love the way he emphasizes how to pay attention to what your opponent is doing and playing accordingly; such as the clips where he explains warrior reflect and how to deal with it, or the multiple times he shows off how to manage cool downs and using that to plan ahead.

The video also comes with voice-over commentary explaining in detail the why and how he pulls off his accomplishments, giving us - the audience - a firm grasp on what he wants us to be paying attention to. Between all of this comes the multiple humorous twists so perfectly blended in to give us a varied and entertaining viewing experience.

The bottom line is; While Evertras may not be the highest profile or renowned mage in World of Warcraft, he certainly does a fantastic job at showing aspiring mages how to improve their performance in PvP, Duels or Arenas. As a final word, I am going to quote Evertras and say: "The most important part is to never give up!".

It's not embedded on the file. It's an overlay that gets automatically put over on videos on the old website. On the new website it does not show! :)

I'm an experienced warlock and none of this really helps me.

That said this video still rocks for people new to the game and I still enjoyed it. Good job doing something successful while still different Evertras!

You're doing the mage community a service.

Man, that was a real inspiration. My frost mage is level 40 right now and I picked up some really useful stuff. Can't wait till I get Water Elemental :)

This video is really solid, some of the tiny things you showed will help even the most experienced mages.

why is the Curse Gaming logo in the way of the text of the video author? Is it that important to remind everyone that you are trying to look like a television channel?

I totally agree! As a former mage player, now a rogue, I loved watching this video. In fact, I quite wish that this kind of movie existed for other classes. The bottom line is: take a page from this guy's book and think 'maybe i don't have to be z0mg uber, I'll just do a video all about how others can see what I do'.

Very excellent video. Glad to see folks adding a new twist to their PvP videos. And Evertras, you're very modest, because you definitely appeared above average in the video. :)

Nice movie :) I actually watched the whole half-an-hour-movie WITHOUT skipping! Nice editing too:) (When I watched "Nerf Druids", which is a movie by an awesome PvP-druid, and should be an inspiration to all of us, I turned it off after 15 mins, not because the playing was bad [she certainly WAS imba!], but because watching ppl get 100's of insame kills just isn't fun if it's the same all the time!) This movie actually was interesting all the way to the end, and why, you ask? I'll tell you why. It's because this movie constantly taught me something new! And I think it'll teach everyone who watches it something too :) God damnit, for my own sake, I really hope that the mages of the horde in the battlegroup "nightfall" don't see this vid ^^

Can't you release another vid: "how to pwn mages if you're a feral druid" too? :P 10/5 rating ;)

Very cool. I really like your explanations, which make it far better than a "look at me own" video.

What mods were you using? In particular:

     Unit Frames
The "freeze" one with what looks like a snowflake.
The "!" one that showed when you Ice Block'd.
The one with the 3 red marks on each side in front.
The one that would show a translucent spell icon when the cd was up.

    Thanks!

Wow this got a lot of comments... thanks guys! As for mods, all but the translucent spell icon things were from a mod called Power Auras. This mod lets you set up graphics to flash on the screen when various conditions are met (for example, the ! was for Hypothermia, the red dashes were for focus gem procs, frozen target was the snowflake). Very awesome mod, highly recommended. The translucent spell thing was JIM's Cooldown Pulse, which just flashes the spell icon when the cooldown is finished. Unit frames are Pitbull.
