World of Warcraft

Teen burns friend; WoW gets blamed

It seems that blaming violent acts by the minority is perfect grounds to persecute the content of PC games like World of Warcraft as, once again, we are presented with a remote case that is being treated strangely like a persistent problem.

A 17-year old Chinese boy attacked and burned a classmate from School and then promptly blamed World of Warcraft for his actions.

The boy had earlier been in a fight with the victim, which he had lost. He later decided to take revenge on the victim by dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. The victim suffered third-degree burns on 38% of his body and the attacker claims that he lost himself in World of Warcraft. Whilst setting the victim alight, he claims he transformed into a Fire Mage.

The 17-year old boy received 8 years in prison and his accomplice received seven. The victim will receive compensation after suffering burns to 55% of his body and the parents of both the attacker and the accomplice have been ordered to pay a fine of 750,000 RMB.

    1) It's no surprise most of the attacks/suicides come from China. Well, just look at all the s**t the kids there are watching... those cartoons are almost like brainwashing.
Another thing is: one Chinese down... 999 999 999 more to go. Now, who is more violent? Me or WoW? >) I'm not rasist or stuff, but why is always such a fuss about Chinese killing in the name of games... When someone kills his tribe-mate in Congo with a poorly made spear, because he lost to him in duel, I'll understand that...

    2) I wanna turn into fearsome warrior with Execute usable at 100% target's HP, with +100% Crit Chance and +300% Crit Damage Bonus. Now that would be cool... I would be a Darth Rend and would build myself a Mortal Star and execute all who would dare to face me. =P

btw: I once killed a lvl 1 critter... it was a roach, but I blame WoW... it told me to do that...

    Stupid Americans...

    ...oh wait...

Why is it a surprise that an aggressive person does something aggressive? I cannot count the number of times that i myself have been beaten/defeated in game. No one can win forever. Taking it to this level just shows that the boys involved in the burning had no self control. If it was not World of Warcraft it would have been something else at some point.

People are to quick to point to the flash point of problems and say it was its fault. I wonder how much better off the world as a whole would be if people took the time to try and understand the reason a PERSON did a thing and less time wondering how a THING made a person do something.

All that aside I hope the poor boy that got burned recovers quickly.

    If he recovers :(

But seeing as the attacker is already sentenced, I'm assuming he did.

Still 3rd degree burns on 38% of your body equals death on many cases.

"When if only those that have been victims had been armed!"

Then there would be still either a dead person or someone hurt. Sure gun control is actually more of a detriment to the people who actually follow the law. But when you take all the classes and do all the proper steps to own that weapon and use it you will understand all the better the when to use it and when not to use it.

Also when it does come time and you have the permit and done all the right steps and you do defend yourself, there will be no question as to who was in the right.

So overall Gun Control is good, but as anything taken to the extreme too much Gun Control is bad.

Since when did mages get a spell that douses your target and gasoline and sets them on fire?

  • Sat, Dec 29 2007 11:03 AM ()

"I am Galdstaf, sorcerer of light!"

"Then why'd you have to use goblin rocket fuel?"

    "HAHAHAHA...."

(I'm so going to hell, but I could'nt resist...)

Not realizing what is reality and what is not reality is a sick psychosis, and no game, movie, tv show, or another person shall ever be at fault from an individual's own psyche. This boy should be a high detention medical clinic for the criminally insane... not prison.

    Scorch Rank 9 FTL :(

But seriously, people will blame anything for their actions, they want to give themselves justification and closure. Kids like this are sick and really need to be in a hospital away from society.

Somehow the media likes to think that when someone legitimately mentally ill blames their actions on a video game, that means the video game is actually to blame. Now, if I were to go and stab someone to death with a giant sword and say the works of Shakespeare made me think it was okay, nobody would think Shakespeare's plays were responsible--they would quite reasonably send me to a mental institution. Because I would be nuts. But somehow when it's a video game and some poor crazy person can't tell the difference between that and reality, it becomes the game's fault.

  • Sat, Dec 29 2007 11:03 AM ()

If the victim had only used his fire resistance totem and earth shock then things wouldn't have been so bad for him.

  • Sat, Dec 29 2007 11:03 AM ()

A very good point indeed, just seems like some people try to find a reason for a very fast changing world, and they can't see further than the video games.

You can see this happen especially in countries such as China and the rest of Asia. They are growing so fast that some people just can't adjust to a new life, so let's just blame something.....

This kid isn't mentally ill, he's smart. He knew exactly what he was doing. I'd be more apt to blame the media, he probably got the idea from a news story. If he "lost" himself in the game did the accomplice as well? Some people are just born evil.

Smart, probally the attacker hated WoW or had something against it and was pissed off at the kid so what is better? People sometimes have weakened sentances due to things like this but honestly. Mages or anything in WoW do NOT need gasoline. He might as well through flaming paper wads, that seems more like a mage. and Yes Llandru i agree completely exept the last part, people arent born evil, its the way the mature.

When i read things like this i just cant belive how stupid some people can be. This attacker kid is full of B.S. How can you do such a thing to another person and then claim that you had no control over your actions. If that is the case then cant we blame any crime any form of media?

This attacker kid is only doing what kids always do. When they get in trouble they lie and try to find someway to blame someone or something else.
