World of Warcraft

Teen burns friend; WoW gets blamed

It seems that blaming violent acts by the minority is perfect grounds to persecute the content of PC games like World of Warcraft as, once again, we are presented with a remote case that is being treated strangely like a persistent problem.

A 17-year old Chinese boy attacked and burned a classmate from School and then promptly blamed World of Warcraft for his actions.

The boy had earlier been in a fight with the victim, which he had lost. He later decided to take revenge on the victim by dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. The victim suffered third-degree burns on 38% of his body and the attacker claims that he lost himself in World of Warcraft. Whilst setting the victim alight, he claims he transformed into a Fire Mage.

The 17-year old boy received 8 years in prison and his accomplice received seven. The victim will receive compensation after suffering burns to 55% of his body and the parents of both the attacker and the accomplice have been ordered to pay a fine of 750,000 RMB.

Well one thing i have to say:

When the hell has gasoline been needed to be a fire mage? ......

Anyway, this silly little argument about gaming being the blame from violence is absolutely just a sign of our world looking to blame something new again. We had dodgeball in schools, but soon parents around the world began to blame it from bulying and what not, yet truly there is not branch from that at all.
Thats all this type of debate really is, the world trying to blame something new, and mostly something that people with their suit's tie tied a little bit tight around their neck need to get out to the world. Gaming does not cause violence, the person that can't hold himself in his own head is to blame, and we need to start prosecuting the problem, not the "alleged" problem.

All i know is im tired of people bashing gaming, i played plenty of Mature games when i was younger (im only 18) and they never told me to go kill, hurt or anythingl and i believe that if i can, anyone can :/.

I just hope this guy is under watch when he comes out, because its proof him and his friends mind really aren't very stable.

I think it is stupid and unfair that games can get blamed for the stupid things people do. There is nothing to do with gasoline in World of Warcraft so the kid would have got the idea somewhere else.

WoW is a convenient scape goat here. If he truly thought he was a fire mage, he'd have simply waved his hands for a couple of seconds, right? (depending of course, on what spell he believed he was casting)

This is the same sort of argument that haunted D&D in its early years. But then, Wile E. Coyote and the Acme Corporation have also been blamed for the world's ills.

I am so tired of the media pointing out the negative and ignoring the positive. Therefore I have two stories that are both positive as a result of World of Warcraft.
My best friend has a son who Spectrum Autism disorder. He hardly ever socialized or talked. The best we hoped for was an occassional smile. At the time I was new to WoW and thought he might enjoy playing with me online. I suggested to his mother that she should purchase a copy so we could play together. At first, he never spoke on general, party, or trade channel. I was worried that he would feel pressured by other people to speak by means of teamspeak or messaging and give up playing. However, he enjoyed playing the game so much he began to ask his mother how to write sentences and how to set up voice chat. Before long, this young man became one of the best players on our realm and had so many friends he barely had time to play with me. He no longer was afraid to type or talk. He wanted to be apart of this community. A person who was once lost with no hope of having a life outside of his room now is working toward become an IT.
The reality of this boy claiming that Warcraft had anything to do with his cruel and heartless act is absurd. He needs to be evaluated for being psychologically unstabe.
    Another case-
I never played online games before WoW. It was given to me as a gift. I was in a really unhealthy relationship with a man. I had two children and felt pretty isolated because I could only afford daycare while I went to school. However, when I played WoW I made friends and I met the man I have been with for over two years now. We became friends online and played toghether everyday. Before long we got to know each other as people and fell in love. We have been together ever since and not a moment goes by that I am not thankful that we found eachother in the least likely of places. We are living proof that games like these open the world up to people who would have otherwise never met. We live in a new age. The game does not dictate your behavior. We all know that we are not night elves in real life and we all know that killing or harming others is wrong. The people online have real feelings and have real lives and none of us that I know of have ever had the desire to kill real life people for honor points!

Im glad i live in a quite country oO And when i say quite i mean it. But this is sick. "Transformed into a fire mage". Someone call the Insanity Police. This kid must have been heavly addicted or either hes just 1 that doesn't like ANYTHING To happen to him. Like if you accidently hit him (Not with hands ^-^ More like elbow) He likes "WTF ARE YOU DOING MAN?!" And then this guy gets heavlly beated up or something like that. Im just saying the possibilty. But why blame wow? "ITS WOW'S FAULT I BURNED THIS DUDE'S BODY! THEY MADE ME INTO A FIRE MAGE!". That sounds ridicolous, ey? :p (Bad english, and overrated tougths, may be in this post ^-^)

Yerr, so just becouse I'm a shaman I should visit my X and her new boyfriend in the tub, drop a hair drier and scream "CHAIN LIGHTNING, MULTIKILL!" - then clearly blame it on WoW, "yerr, I heard this noise and bam, I had my elemental gear on, I really thought they were two mobs comming at me!"

Weak people, blaming their actions on a game. The fun part is they'll probably get a boyfriend @ jail..

I would have to say that the story about the child with Autism was interesting. I've dealt with autism before and have even been suspected of having the disorder, if only mildly. I would say however that it is possible for Autistic children to go in an opposite direction and become obsessed with something to the point of violence. It is highly likely that a mental disorder, such as Spectrum Autism, could lead to violent acts being carried out that have direct connections to WoW.

The point is however, that underlying mental disorders are needed in order for this to occur imho. WoW doesn't just convert sane people to insanity with a click of the fingers.

About a month ago, Fox news said that WOW was actually a good game and that it helped people with problem solving skills in a "real life disaster" setting. They refered to a time in the past when WOW had a virus or something and a bunch of people got stuck in one of the major cities and could not get out. They talked about how people from all over were going to the city trying to figure out how to help the chars that were stuck get out.
    KUDOS FOX NEWS!

I just hate stupid people.... and this idiot is the opitomy of stupitity. I'll sick my Pet on him, cast beastial Wrath, drop the Devilsaur trinket and watch his HP meter go.... But then again this is reality and not an MMORPG. So I'd just b*tch smack. Yeah, I really do hate stupid people. If you can't take resposibility for your own actions, than you have no right to be out walking around with everyone else that can and do.

A premeditated act like his should have gotten him a whole lot more than 8 years! As stated in another comment, he is 17, not a child. He should have been sentenced as an adult. A premeditation like that.... he had the full intent to kill the victim in an extreamly violent maner. He should have gotten life. Or worse.

WoW is addicting, yes. But most of the time only if you have an addictive personality. For example an ex drug user, or ex alcoholic. They simply shift thier addiction to something else. I think playing a few hours of a video game that you interact with other people world-wide is alot better than spending hundreds of dollars for a few hours of complete stupor with the high chance you will die IRL from it, and a garentee that you will cause great damage to your body and your loved ones.
But hey, that's just my opinion.

After my car wreck I did not socialize with many people at all. Lack of trust, and low opinion of most everyone else on the planet. And you know what, because of this game I do socialize with people, and Not just ingame anymore. I met a wonderful guy in the guild I joined (Ex DnD player, about to give up on WoW untill a friend had me join thier server and give it another try). We have been together IRL for several months now, And YES I blame WoW! I blame WoW for my HAPPINESS!

Hold on so wait. Has anyone seen that it is usualy asian people that do this. How about not offering the game to Asia. it would cut down on Gold farmers and stupidity like this. (No offense to anyone if they are asian.) Im just saying aparently people in asia think they cna get away with *** like this, welt hello YOU CANT. Like if I duel my friend and he kills me I cant run over to his house and yell "RAWR IM A WARRIOR ERRR WOW IS BAD" and then cut his head open with a sword and say "Heroic strike 5k crit. Woot. It doesnt work like that. If we just not alow the game to asia then it would cut down on gold farmers and everyone hates those and power lvlers and also stupid *** like this. So im sry if you are asian but other people in asia fucked it up for ya. And that is my words on this matter.
