WoW hits the big 10,000,000

World of Warcraft has finally done it. Blizzard Entertainment has reported that the hit MMORPG, World of Warcraft, has hit 10,000,000 (ten million) subscribers world wide. This is a massive milestone for not only Blizzard but also the MMO world.

Currently the world markets are looking typical, with Asia boasting the biggest share of the total, coming in at 5.5 million subscribers. North America has 2.5 million and Europe has the smallest percentage with 2 million. This comes directly after the holiday season, which Blizzard is holding responsible for this new number claiming that many new players came to the world of Azeroth and many old players returned in waiting for Wrath of the Lich King.

World of Warcraft has now cemented itself as one of the most popular video games in history as well as the most played Western MMO in the World.

The question now is will Wrath of the Lich King gain Blizzard another 1,000,000 subscribers by this time next year? We will have to wait and see... Perhaps this could be the last time we see World of Warcraft breaking records.

Congratulations! Want to buy some gold now? Just kidding. It's great to see it still growing, despite some random idiot's claim to WoW's downfall.

I doubt they'll break 12 million, if they do i doubt they'll break 15 million but if they do... oh wait.

The sky is pretty much the limit with WoW, and that's not only a good thing for Blizzard, but the MMO market as a whole. It opens up the genre to a whole new playerbase that may have not considered playing MMOs before.

    Congrads Blizz:

Maybe this means I can spend less time waiting for a team to form for Instances and spend more time actually playing the game! :D

10,000,000 subscribers doesn't mean 10,000,000 players i wonder how many of these are 1 person with 2 or 3+ accounts? and i bet a vast majority of the accounts belong to gold farmers, imo if blizzard knew what accounts belonged to gold farmers and was to ban them all 10,000,000 would become <7,000,000 real fast :D

    10 million subscribers x $15 a month...

Blizzard is raking in $150 million A MONTH from this game ALONE and we as players still have to deal with quite a few balance issue and bugs. I mean, come on.

More power to Blizz for generating such subscription numbers, but it makes me wonder where all the money is going.

To be fair, adding two or three more people to the development pool doesn't necessarily mean quicker or more balanced content.

In the end, it usually turns out quite the opposite, where you have several designers now arguing over what they each feel is "right" for the game.

uhm, well it's not like they are making 100% profit off the 15$

    Shirvington,

I can understand were you are coming from but are you prefect and if you go to school or work do you do a prefect job. Name me one product/person/object that is prefect, so lets not push are theoretical wanted prefect requirements on a company that is meeting majority of people's requirements and needs.

Additionally $150 million revenue that is not profit and does not take into account the operating costs.

Lastly name another game that is close to WoW in terms of reliability and functionality in MMO genre.

I think my other colleagues said it, adding staff increases the complexity, since now the new staff need to be familiar with game dynamics and understand the development trail so far. Additionally when you add new code to original developed code, you always have issues, especially if you use add-ons.

I would want Blizzard to work with some of the third party add-on developers so that we have smoth transition to updates/patches and there is a standard for add-on development. just a wish, since I enjoy the game and know Blizzard providing a great service to the players

And WoW would still be the most played P2P MMO in the Western World. I don't think they'd care too much :-)

if their taking in 150 million a month i think they can afford to pay someone to admin av's. To be honest right now av has the largest number of exploiters this game has ever seen. i'd rather deal with gold farmers then have to be in a av where only 20 people are currently playing and the other 20 are just sitting in the cave >_> i know their making improvements to fix this problem but they need to do it faster because by the time they do something about it...all the people afking and using bots will have what they want and have gotten away with it.

i can deal with someone using their hard earned money to pay for something but i don't really approve of someone downloading some free bot then letting it farm them honor something which they don't deserve. And the rest of us suffer in av's because of it. bleh i'll stop ranting now

Also, one should mention that Asian pay schemes are nothing like the monthly fees we have in America and Europe. In Asian countries, they pay per hour if I remember correctly. Also, Blizzard contracted out the control of the WoW Asian "entity" to a 3rd party. I can't remember the details exactly, but it's something to keep in mind since the Asian populace of WoW makes up over half the subscribers so using those numbers is possibly quite off base.

Don't confuse the issue here, guys.

The exact amount of profit is irrelevent as are the pay schemes. Furthermore, the quality of WoW in relation to other MMOs as well as the workplace efficiency of adding new staff members are also irrelevent. Kody, even at a modest $50 million/month estimate for US/EU subscribers, I would not expect Blizzard to add "two or three" people to the development pool for WoW. I would expect them to add a team of the best of the best game developers that money can buy.

Point being, we, as customers, know that Blizzard is making money hand over foot with just this one MMO. In fact, I would venture that WoW could pay for most of Blizzard's other gaming ventures if they were to suddenly go free to play. We know Blizz has the financial resources to take this game leaps and bounds forward, but yet we can expect a 2 YEAR delay between expansion packs? Give me a break.

    True...

Then again, i play WoW on a daily basis, and too much of it if you ask me, but i might add, that i played all mmo's out there, and crawl back to WoW due to my friends are too damn stubborn to play anything else since its their first mmo ;)

But i might add that the good thing about wow, looked from a experienced mmo players eyes, i might say the sucess is huge, due to the game beeing so easy to play, i mean come on, 10 year olds play it since its so darn easy :)

Its not like Everquest or Vanguard or something like that :)

But nice to see them break the 10mill milepole, and the Asian community has so high numbers most likely due to the gold farming companies :)

I find it quite sad that Blizzard brings out a statement like this when at the same time about 2 millions of those subscriber (note not players) have been exploiding the PVP BG content for the past month without no reaction. Now Blizzard is reacting, failing to see that the dmg is already done. There are litterally millions of items in the game now that were cheated out of it. And its the honest real players that are suffering.

Secondly - the really unbalanced Arena system is not getting fast enough reaction from Blizzard. There are now about 2 months since players realised the huge advance the CC players have in there. Not to mention the CC clases that have no counter like druids. At the same time BLizzard have been counting numbers instead of quickly fixing these issues.

This totally unbalanced Arena and free PVP epix is at this point bringing out huge unbalance in the overall gameplay for the game. That should be the big news from Blizzard.

I truely hope another MMORPG will be able to challence Blizzard at this point. Cause as of this point they are just taking longer and longer time reacting to obvious cheats, unbalance and expoids. And that is not what honest real players are after.
