U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in World of Warcraft

Spy gear

Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.

The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

  • The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.
  • If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.

Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

The publicly available report -- which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs -- also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

  • Video Analysis and Content Extraction - software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video
  • Tangram - A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack
  • Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination - This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program. It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.

The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure in literature.

I'd come up with any kind of excuse to play world of warcraft at work.

In a world where saying "I just got raped", and calling eachother niggers is the standard, it's impossible to say who are the extremists and who are not. And also, "suspicious behaviour"? Zomg gogo throw bombs on halaa!!! Will we get arrested for that, because we were planning to bomb a city xD?

    THIS IS MADNESS!(Pun intended)

yeah, all I could think was "I hope they dont decide to look at FPSes" Id have to quit playing my suicide bomber Osama_bin_wit_ur_mama

What do they seriously think to do monitoring video games? They cant possibly prove any case based on the way people play games. On top of which the games are all played by people in various countries and no one outside the US could be held liable for anything under US law.

Im at a lose here. Do they seriously have nothing better to do with the money than look in on games? I want to strangle the guy who suggested it, and yet at the same time shake his hand for selling this BS idea too.

Cept, guess what? It didn't work out quite like they planned....

If you stand in a starter area and kill all of the mobs so that lowbies can't complete their quests, whilst spamming, "LOLOWNED!," in /yell format... well... does that constitue terrorism?

I could say some things about flyin gmounts now but I don't think that would be politically correct :-(

WOW some of your points are really retarded... do you guys really think that the US gov't is doing this to arrest people by using a video game? The awser is no they are using it to track down terrorist in other countries. And plus they wont really be playing, sorry for any spies... but instead they will be watching what other people are tying and have been typing. Everything that you have done in the history of you playing world of warcraft is recorded so they will be reading. They have professionals that look at behavior and they have tracked down terrorist through myspace AIM and other stuff so i doubt they will have a problem with this . and my last point i would like to make is that the ARE USING THIS TO TRACK DOWN TERRORIST, so they will be looking at where people are logging in from like which countries and mostly look at thier accounts first.

It's funny how last time it was Xbox live now its World of Warcraft for some reason if you going to waste billions of dollors on people who are going to Raid Towns or Citys in the game because you believe they are Terrorist your wasting money, If they are ganking the same person in the game over and over in Battlegrounds are they consider Terrorist?

Gold Farmers and Account stealers maybe as far as I know no one fucking cares not even Blizzard if you going to study the behavior of how players in the game act in messages they say. Base on proof by ABC or CBS news report few months back about a First Person Shooter games, that Teenage kids who live in another country are being recruted by Terrorist groups to do battle in the "virtual world." with with Americans, thats a laugh because we can kick there asses anyways no matter how good of a player they are.

Then comes the question: what is a terrorist?

I wonder how many in the US government who can give a straight and precise answer to that...
Do they even have a clear definition?

I don't know about you guys, but to me it just sounds like somebody's just being paranoid here.
Take a look at this "War against terror"-campaign that mister Bush & CO. here is running; sure they may have killed a couple of people whose intentions weren't all good, but isn't tracking down and killing people also some kind of terror?I wonder what things look like from the "terrorists'" point of view...

He may have killed a few so called terrorists, but I'm also pretty damn sure that he, by doing this, also has got a couple of new recriuts to al-Quaida and the other gangs down there.

Now, I'm not saying that I support terror in any way, but I think everyone should stop to take a look around a little bit once in a while, to get an idea of what's actually happening. =)

--just my two cents, like it or leave it ;-)

With the lack of intelligence shown by much of our government, I wouldn't be surprised if their program just looked for people typing arabic. Or guild names with any combination of the words "al" and "qaeda" in them. I also like how part of their study is to determine what is the norm in the virtual world...that should be interesting.
