I'm just hoping they do some server merging in 2.3 :) but i think the arena system might make that kinda difficult

You can use a mod called Adapt <http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/3241/> to animate your portraits. X-perl may do the same thing, but X-perl is really ugly imo so I don't use it.

it shouldnt be that hard actually if done between arena seasons it wouldnt really affect it since arena ranking reset at the beginning of the season and server merger could be done with in same battle group wit out affecting anything ive seen them merge battlegroups in the past they did this between s1 and s2 if i remember correctly
