World of Warcraft

Can WoW teach the US Government about Terrorism?

I really don't know where to begin with this one. On one hand, there are some resemblances in acts within the game, but actually comparing it to taking hundreds or thousands of lives? Lives that don't come back? No resurrection to recover from a wipe? Yeah... that's a bit much, honestly.

According to this article on Wired, the Center for Terrorism and Intelligence Studies "thinks the game could provide a powerful new way to study how terrorist cells form and operate."

"The main strength is that [Warcraft] involves 'real' people making real decisions in a world with some kind of [controllable] bounds," said Blair, who said studying players' actions could prove useful to military intelligence analysts. "To put it academically, you have both dependent and independent variables."

A Yale University terrorism expert commented in the article by saying the following, which seems to make more sense than the initial foray into mild insanity.

"This is very interesting and relevant to the times," he said, "though I wouldn't base a new counterterrorism strategy on the nuances of a videogame."

What are your thoughts? Will the Center for Terrorism and Intelligence Studies find something useful, or are they barking up the wrong tree?

This will get perverted by the media eventually. I can see the headline already, "Terrorist Groups Forming In Online Games." It'll happen.

World of warcraft Provides people with the ability to interact socially. This sort of social interaction is by design clickish. Form a Guild, one person is the GM, give your members ranks and responcibilities. For the Majority of the People that Play WoW, this is just a way to make sure they are able to complete thier in game objectives. Any true terrorist organization isn't going to use a public entity such as WoW to construct a terrorist cell, unless they are absolutely retarted, upon which they could hardly be considered a threat.

I think that this is a stupid idea. The closest thing to terrorism in WoW would be IIlidan Stormrage with an Infernal and Doom Lord Kazzak attacking SW or Orgrimaar.

Yeah, the government really must be slipping if us WoW geeks are supposed to be the new rolemodels for training the military and CIA in ways to deal with terrorism. oh boy. i'm really cringing at the fact that this is MY government, of MY country. where, oh where, did we go so wrong??
This is a game. This is fun. When we start to equate the game with terrorist strategies, we go right back to the thought that violence on TV and in video games is what makes people kill other people. It's a skewed viewpoint, and it's skewed in a completely false direction. This has the potential to be a huge media nightmare on so many levels. argh.

Having coped flak from all the "Video games are direct links to obesity" and all those other lines... the fact that they are trying to link wow to terrorism in this manner makes me sick. Its a computer game, it has no bearing on real life, it doesn't even factor in any aspects of real life. In all honesty, I expected more about this from the rumored "Tom Clancy MMO" since that is pretty much about terrorists and counter terrorists.

Oh yeah, I forgot. You would need Arthas and 500 Death Knights that are lvl 80 also.

Given the average common sense quotiant of most of the political hacks in "Homeland Security" I wouldn't put it past them to fund a study on this and waste a few billion dollars of our tax money. On the other hand if the Taliban and Al Qida start gaming on WoW to learn how to counter the counter terrorists it could be a big income boost for Blizzard! (lol like they need it)

And they say we spend too much time on this game. Seems to me that some of these experts might actually need to play the game to know that this is too far from real life to be of any actual use in studying terrorism. I think that so called intellectuals are a little too stupid to see it for what it is, an online game, first and foremost.

And while I am on the subject, VIDEO GAMES DO NOT CAUSE PEOPLE TO KILL PEOPLE. F***ING RETARDS WHO IN ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY GOT THEIR HANDS ON A GLOCK KILL PEOPLE.

If they played 5 minutes as a warlock, mage, or any one with MANA, they would know that its a F***ING VIDEO GAME

They are barking up a budget for Pentagon Officials to be able to play WoW on the public dime. That'a all.

It won't be effective. In the game I couldn't care less if I died. In real life, I think its a bit different.. Then again, suicide bombings are JUST as ridiculous as basing terrorism strategies on a video game. I really see no difference between the East and West come to think of it.
