Starting out with Blizzard's official Arena Rankings with their implementation of the Armory and following up with the World Series

None

Well thought out news post, I read all of it and must say I completely agree.

When it comes down to why didn't this happen with Guild Wars, I think its the fact that WoW is a bigger market to cater to as well as the fact that blizzard seems to be pushing WoW as an esport and thanks to all the money they have from subscriptions, can do so on a large scale.

I don't know how well it would catch on in general public viewing, but the people that really care, and would like to follow up on this kind of thing, can now.

As to how easy it is to follow; the knowledge involved... Think about any "real" sport game. I'll use football since I know it best. The goal is simple: Get the ball to the end zone. I'd say that the amount of knowledge required to know what's going on on the field, from a spectator viewpoint, to get that ball to the endzone, is at least as much as arena matches. The plays to use, all the stuff that happens in the clash on the line of scrimmage, how many decisions run through the Quarterback's head (much less any other player), etc etc. I've been watching football religiously all my life, and still need extensive help from the commentators to know what's going on. All that's needed is a good interface for viewing the matches, and you've got the same situation.
