Addon Spotlight: TomTom

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, AddOns, Features, AddOn Spotlight, Leveling

Greetings, folks, I have returned from my vacation, and the hiatus that followed. (Vacation to recover from vacation? Madness!) Today, we're going to take a look at an alternative navigation tool, an addon that provides some of the functionality found in the Cartographer suite. (We've talked about Cartographer before.)

TomTom is a mod that provides a few simple features that can supplement your adventures, especially while leveling. Combined with Lightheaded, (We've also talked about Lightheaded before.) TomTom can shave time off your travels between quest objectives.

The primary purpose of TomTom is to facilitate the creation and use of waypoints. Using this feature gives a player the option to have a Crazy Taxi-like arrow displayed that will guide them towards their waypoint. Combined with Lightheaded, which can be used to find coordinates for quest objectives via user comments on Wowhead, this addon can let you bounce between quest objectives with a minimum of wasted time and travel.

Unfortunately, it cannot be used to auto-run your character, so you can forget about grabbing a sandwich on your way to Marshall's Refuge. TomTom will also display a coordinate frame that gives a quick visual reference to your current location.

There is more to see, come back after the break to get your addon fix for the day.

So, lesson learn, I guess, Capt.

Nonetheless, TomTom is clearly malware.  Downloader Beware!!!

Well there's your problem twinkle-toes ... stop using illegal third party crap; Serves you right.  Next time just mail me some money and give your password to people in trade chat, it will do you just as good.

TomTom isn't hosted on Curse.com, because the developer prefers another website to host their creation (www.wowinterface.com/.../info7032-TomTom.html).

re: "is this thing malware or what?"

Well, I got a WoW-based virus shortly after I added the iDemise leveling system and TomTom to my computer.  Curse doesn't carry it - You be the judge.

Actually wowinterface.com is a totally legitimate addon site.  Some authors post their addons on all the addon sites while other ones have a particular site they prefer and they only use that one.

The Author, Cladhaire, is a pretty well known addon author and they are not putting Malware in their addons.  They are also a Super Mod over at wowinterface if you needed more assurance.

Please remember that an addon can only put Malware on your computer if it has an executable file in it.  .lua & .xml files can not install a virus on your system as they are nothing more than text.

is this thing malware or what? curse doesn't carry it, the only place i see it referenced is in the questhelper command line help screen. tomtom itself is the name of a gps tracking company that got hit by a virus on their gps systems, so if you look up tomtom and virus to see if the 2 are related, you get nothing. Also, almost half of the links on this article try to take you to wowinterface.com, even the "Continue Reading" article, and the blogger tried to use the name curse..... FISHY MUCH?
