Gamasutra has a recap of the Final Fantasy XI Fan festival. In it they discuss the impact of World of Warcraft on their game and how they feel they differentiate themselves from competitors. Most people are familiar with the Final Fantasy series of games and they seem to have reached a similar player base to what I have seen LOTRO quoted at, which is 500 000 players. They have almost 250 000 players in Japan alone which shows how much the Japanese love the Final Fantasy saga.
