Statement regarding sold out Early Access Program

News | May 15, 2008 (1 month, 3 weeks ago) | by Zyuu | via forums.ageofconan.com | Filed in Age of Conan

There's been a lot of complaints about how the Early Access to Age of Conan was handled. Funcom have now issued an official statement.

Funcom has been working very hard towards setting up gaming server capacity to launch this game comfortably for all the people who want to play Age of Conan. We are estimating that on Day One, a very high number of gamers will want to enter Hyboria.

The Open Beta finished on Sunday and we have been prepping those servers to be used as Live game servers, with the first ones to be used for the Early Access Program. Once those are set up and ready, we’re doing final adjustments to the other servers to prepare for full launch.

We measured how much capacity we thought we would need for this program and registrations have been on pace for this capacity – until two days ago. On Monday the registrations spiked and on Tuesday they increased even more. Early on Wednesday the capacity limit was reached and automatically shut off. The entire program is now mostly sold out globally, with some local variation. We had no way of anticipating the spike we saw at the end.

Our goal for Early Access was always to provide the best possible gaming experience for the ones who would get into the program. We scoped servers and download capacity for the 15gb client for a set number, based on our best projections. Those have been soundly surpassed. We are of course extremely humbled by the fact that so many players can’t wait to play the game.

We understand that there’s been some unfortunate confusion about the pre-order keys in some markets. Early Access has been a special limited offer that was exclusively available through the Age of Conan billing pages once you registered your pre-order key. Just to clarify there are no ‘Early Access keys’, and all pre-order keys do of course give the exclusive mounts and item benefits to your account as intended.

Now we have few choices. We could shut down the Closed Beta and reformat those servers to set them up for Early Access instead, but the fact is that the Closed Beta is supplying extremely valuable information that we would not want to miss. Quality is always our first goal and we would not want to compromise that but rather focus on the experience for all of you at launch.

Our best course of action is to move as quickly as we can to finalize the adjustments of the full range of launch servers, and to concentrate on being completely prepared for launch. It is only a matter of days even for those who are not in the Early Access program to set foot in Hyboria.

We are looking forward to greet you there!

Yours sincerely,

Funcom Development Team

yea im kinda sad about the so called limit they have to the early access, tbh close the rest of the beta servers down, the info they give, they will get from the live servers to, and who makes a limited early acccess any way, next thing is they are gonna suddenly limit the poeple who can play, and wont exspand their servers, not the best way of gaining players tbh. but what can we do, they dont care any way :) we can only w8

This game looks amazing and I bought it today after a close friend informed me of how awesome it was. I bought it and to my dismay, I cannot play it until next week. That's pretty shady for a game to be sold in stores with no disclaimer or such telling the customer that they can't access it until later. It's like buying a $100,000 Jag and being forced to drive your old sunfire for a week before you can ride in style.

Looks great but to me, it is off to a bad and false start.

Sembiance
I agree on most of your statements.
They should have known how many that were intrested in Early Access. I am one of those who didnt have the time to just enter the freakin VISA number.
BUT, Im gonna wait til the 23rd anyways.
Lets home the waiting pays off.
Lets face it, nothing they can do about it now anyways.

Funcom's marketing/PR department has 'corporate assmunchers' written all over everything they release.

Quote: "We had no way of anticipating the spike we saw at the end."
Oh give me a f#&@(ing break!

You knew how many pre-orders.
You yelled to from the mountain top 'Look how many people applied for beta!'.

You made a decision that it's no big deal if there are not enough spots. That was an acceptable way to treat your customers to you. So you picked a low estimate for spots instead of a realistic one, and wiped your hands.

They gave the same lame excuses and OUTRIGHT LIES when they responded to the bugged beta client fiasco.

Quote: "it seems that most people are actually having tons of fun AND good performance"
My bloody ass! Everyone knows that the latter 'AND good performance' part is a total lie.

I admire Funcom for taking risks in the industry.
Making a Mature rated MMO with gore and nudity.
Making adventure games like The Longest Journey.

What I don't admire are the liars, excuse makers and double talkers that they have in their marketing department.

Funcom, maybe this CRAP flies over there in Norway, but it doesn't here in the states.

I highly suggest you look to some other companies for some ways to fix your broken PR/Marketing department before it drives your company into the ground.

they don't know how many pre orders they sold? Sigh, 1 pre order = 1 pre start, how hard can it be to calculate that part.

Bad start funcom.
