  •

Note: I've taken this mod over from the original author as Aveasau seems to be no longer active.

What is Karma?

Karma is a tool for helping keep track of people you meet in WoW, letting you write notes and give/remove karma to them. It also tracks the following about each person automatically:

  • Amount of Experience gained while grouped with them
  • Amount of Time played with them
  • Quests which they have helped you with

The Karma setting is a value which represents your impression of other characters. Green is good, blue is neutral, red is unliked. By default everyone starts at blue, and you determine if they deserve more or less karma.

What can I do with it?

Karma can be used to help track those people encountered in the game, primarily those you group with, but you can also manually add people, handy most especially for really annoying people you'd like to ignore. The Karma bar can have points added when someone does something nice/good, and points removed when they do mean/abusive/stupid things. Examples would be if a wandering Druid heals and buffs me as they run past, I might give them some karma, while someone who keeps sending me guild invites without asking me first would get karma removed.

Karma is also useful as a means of a global friends/ignore list. It remembers people you've met, regardless of which character you choose to play (obviously only on a per server basis). It will also you allow you to ignore people regardless of which character you are playing on. Trades/Invites/Duels will all be automatically canceled and/or ignored for you, as well as the normal chat ignore feature.

How do I use it?

You can bind a key to toggle the Karma window, or you can open it with /karma window. This window will show you all people you've grouped with (since the mod was installed of course), and clicking on them will show how long you've played with them, how much xp you've gained while grouped, and which areas were explored together and quests completed with them. You can also adjust their karma, and add notes about them. Right clicking on a person's picture will let you add or remove Karma to/from them.

Commonly used commands

/karma window - This toggles the karma window.
/karma addmember <name> - Adds a person to your list with normal karma.
/karma addignore <name> - Adds a person with zero karma, and ignores them if you have that option set.

I'll mainly be posting on http://ui.worldofwar.net/ui.php?id=1969 as I don't want to have to keep repeating myself, but I'll try and update here also. Please try to post any bug reports over on worldofwar.net.

Currently all bugs should have gone away, please report any you find over on ui.worldofwar.net, thanks!

interestingly enough, if ia play without Karma, i do not get that error at all, when using the corresponding actions that resulted in the error with Karma enabled.

the littlebug with the secure hooks atm is known, so i guess i just have to wait until Blizz patches to 2.0.2 and fixes that problem

one other thing, as it tends to add anyone in your group, and that can get problematic in BG's like AV as there are repeatiable quests, and that way they can not be cleaned with "/karma clean" as they have quest info stored, hope for a delete option soon

I got the same error and disabling karma removed the error messages...

  • Dec. 20, 2006, 08:24PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

alchmo: The "<addon> was blocked" error messages are fairly inaccurate, they generally popup with the name of whichever mod was on the top of the "currently doing something" list, rather than the mod that actually resulted in the error. Nothing that Karma does has anything at all to do with your inventory or equipment–I suggest playing with Karma disabled for a bit and see which other mods throw that error.

got a little problem, as long as Karma is enabled, well actually 2 problems: 1.: is that when i use a poison with my rogue and i wish to replace a poison on one of my weapons i get a "Karma was blocked" message, if i disable it, it works fine. also works if i wait until the poison is worn off, then no error at all. 2.: secodn problem is, when i loot sometimes (mostly when lootign money) i get the "Karma was blocked" message as well, only happens if im in a group

I did use http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=1780 the Last time and really love the colored KARMA in the Tooltip. I too really would like colored Chat names etc. Could you include this please? (but dont just take it over, the Tooltip code seems to be buggy, it breaks my AFToolTip Guild display for allys)

And... The Improved Karma had 10 Karma steps instead the original 100. This seemed to few, so I changed it to get 20 Steps (10 positive and 10 negative). This seems to be a perfect Value, you might easyly see the colorsteps and I had every time the right number of steps, without clicking as a mad....

Thanks for the fix TigaFIN, I'll include it in the next release!

OK, I fixed the bug... Rule #1 of patching system calls or anything like that is that you should call the original routine if at all possible. In this case, Karma was patching the UI and not calling the faction check if it was messing with it...

Here's the fixed code. The target display seems to work 100% well now.

    function Karma_TargetFrame_CheckFaction() KARMA_OriginalTargetFrame_CheckFaction();

if not (UnitIsUnit("target", "player") and UnitName("target") ~=nil and UnitName("target")~="" and (UnitFactionGroup("target")==UnitFactionGroup("player")) and UnitIsPlayer("target")) then local targetname=UnitName("target"); local memberlist=Karma_Faction_GetMemberList(); if (targetName and memberlist[Karma_AccentedToPlain(strsub(targetname,1,1))][targetname] ~= nil) then KARMA_CURRENTMEMBER=targetname; end KarmaWindow_Update(); end end

(Edit: noticed a bug when I used /invite when no one was selected...should be fixed now. I think that bug was already there, but I don't know why I didn't trigger it before. Should be OK now or at least I don't get the error box.)

I had the old version installed and noticed a peculiar bug today. It exists in this new version as well.

If you click on a PvP NPC, the current target panel will show the PvP icon on it. If you then click on your own portrait or on any other player, their panels will also show PvP even if they are not PvP. Click on a non-PvP NPC and they will show up as not PvP.

In other words, the target panel will show the PvP status of the last NPC when a player PvP status should be displayed.

The tooltip displays the correct PvP status.

Hopefully this can be fixed easily.

Feel free to put the ui.worldofwar.net URL in the "website" area on the mod. We have no issues whatsoever about referencing other websites. ^_^

I just ask that you at least please come check the comments here for bug reports as people are stupid and refuse to read. (I've got a few that i help update here and even thought i've got all these notices posted saying "GO >HERE< to report bugs!!" they still just post them in the comments section. ^_^

Just letting people know, to save doubling up all my posting I'll do most of my chatting over on ui.worldofwar.net :)

Enjoy the Karma bar slider btw :)

My hero! :D I loved that addon, great to see it back. :)

The zone/quest tracking is a relatively small part of the footprint, so disabling it wouldn't really lead to huge memory savings, however I'll add it to my to do list.

The friends list functionality is on my list already, I've been trying to think of good ways to implement it. Some sort of online notification would be ideal if I can hook it in.

Extra sorting/field display for people on the list is another thing I'd like to include, just added it to my list.

All these things will take time though, I don't have as much time as I'd like to work on this, plus I'm still digging through all the code to get a solid understand of how it all works.

This is was a great add-on that I used to love, though its footprint was a bit large. If you were to make some changes, this is what I would suggest:

    1) Option to disable zone/quest tracking. This is a lot of information that a significant portion of the population, specifically end-gamers, would not find all that useful and would not want to pay the associated memory cost. A simple option to stop tracking it would allow users to arrest memory cost increases while still retain the ability to see where they met people.

    2) Add friends list functionality, namely hilite those people who are online. Since you can't use the actual friendslist -- it has a hard limit of 50 friends while karma does and should not -- you'll need to deal with the slightly tricky issue of issuing /who requests with pauses in between them. Some other friends list addons have done this successfully, for example flagrsp's friendslist.

    3) Add sorting by class, level, perhaps custom group label. If you want to see an add-on with an excellent UI for table display and table sorting, check out Gello's Recap.

Just some ideas. If you implemented these, I think it could make karma the best friends list replacement out there.
