I have been curious about finding an addon which allows you to add notes to your friends list (similar to guild notes)

Practical aplication would be ease in discerning what spec the people on your friends list are (resto shaman, enhance shammy etc)

sure, most of us put FRIENDS on the friends list, but im sure you have the occasional "who the.." anyone heard of something similar? 

You don't need a mod to do this. Blizzard has built in notes for your friends list. To the left of the persons name is a little icon. Click on that to set your note.
