Is it possible to transfer items/gold from say 1 of my ally chars to 1 of my horde chars?  Any way at all?

Only way is via AH shopping. otherwise, no

How do you do it through the AH though?  I tried to sell stuff from my Ally char at the neautral AH in Booty bay and then went on my Horde Char and it said "You cannot bid on your own Auction??

Might require having 2 accounts... You don't see it often anymore so Blizzard may have finally blocked it fully as it should not be allowed.. I don't play both sides so I cannot confirm.

Get a friend you can trust and either have him sell the item for you and give you the gold on it, or you give him the gold to buy it so your alt get the funds. Only way I can see to do it
