I play on a 2 year-old computer and I have some of the best response/least lag issues of anyone I know. Your computer is not always the problem. Take a look at your framerate (fps) and your latency in game. If your fps are low then most likely the problem is either a whimyp graphics card or too-little memory. If your fps are fine but your latency is high, then there isn't much you can do for you comp. Instead, you need to invest more money into your ISP because your connection is the issue.
Most ppl I know that have pretty decent computers run about 15-35 fps in a high-traffic area like Dalaran (remember this number is an estimate only and varies through a lot of circumstances). Out in Azeroth or SW I can get around 70. Concerning latency, I generally run about 70-130 at all times but I am very close to my ISP's hub. Most ppl I know run about 300 in boss fights. Once you get above 500...that's generally when you're standing in void zone or fire that doesn't show up on your screen til 3 seconds later. Obviously I and everyone else gets the occasional lag spike through either our ISP or the server itself that causes some kind of issue to where we die to that VZ or fire... but try to make sure you know what the problem is before you just go out and buy a new computer. It may not be the answer.
