Database is Live!

The new database is live! It's not finished yet, obviously, but we've been putting a lot of work into it for the past few days to get it ready.

So, here you have it: http://vg.curse-gaming.com/en/database/

So I guess you and ASP have merged? Will you also be providing a top 100 list of players that contribute?

Report this thread post

Very nice. One thing that could be done though..diverse between Adventure lvl and Diplomatic skill. e.g. if you search for all quests in Hathor Zhi you will find loads of lvl 11 quests...wich are in fact Diplomatic tasks at whatever skill and which could be done ( i did at least) at lvl 1.

What we're going to ask is all previous users of VGDB.org register on Curse, and reply to this thread with your previous username. We'll transition your contribution on VGDB to Curse Points over here, which will, in the future, be a form of currency to give you account upgrades and we also hope discounts on products (such as games or gametime cards).

Vladoz here using the same name I had on vgdb from Beta.

The "bin/vgclient.exe" window popping up and showing debug-type information when running Vanguard is normal?

Report this thread post

It's normal if you have Configuration->Show Console Window activated. Right click the icon and you should be able to turn it off.

Database looks great.

Does Curse have any concerns that Sigil does not allow databases that use 3rd party data collection programs?

http://forums.vanguardsoh.com/showthread.php?t=104271&highlight=data

Elrar (Sigil employee):
Sigil does not have an issue with database sites, so long as the data is collected through community members and not via data mining. (automatically sniffing and decoding packets. etc.)

I'd like to help out with the database and use the 3rd party program, but it appears to be against the EULA?

Report this thread post

My understanding is that Sigil doesn't like automatic databases, but that they aren't explicitly forbidden according to the EULA. Also, Elrar is talking about sniffing and decoding packets which is very different from how the curse client collects its data. All the client sees is what is already clearly visible to the player, so it is not that different from the old way of manually submitting info to a database, except that it happens automatically and it is more accurate.

Sigil had previously said that the client wasn't against the EULA, but now they're being very unclear about the whole thing. So far they haven't outright stated that it's not allowed (and I'd be very surprised and disappointed if they did), so as far as I'm concerned their original statement stands and I'll be using the client.

I think the biggest fuss about the database is because of two reasons:

  1. Sony wants to make money off of it, which is extremely retarded. I do *not* agree with the game publishers also becoming their own fansites, Blizzard is a good example of someone who tries too hard for this.
  2. Other fansites are complaining because they can't do what we're doing.

However you look at it, we're here to stay.

bylbok vgdb --> bylbok curse.

While nice having the data accessible, some of it takes a bit of work to access. I've got a few suggestions that would improve the databise side of the site greatly, while not being too much work.

1) Improve search. Sort of a Thottbot-type advanced search...quest/item/npc by level, zone, slot ,etc.

2) Google Map style maps. Just take the chunk maps already on the site and piece them together into a smaller clickable map, with sub-maps per chunk. Something like they have over at Gamepressure. The data is already all here, why not use it.

That's all for now :)

Thanks

So, one thing that I liked on VGDB.com was that it would actually TELL ME what chunks were appropriate for what level. I cannot seem to find that functionality in this incarnation of it.

Report this thread post

Also, my VGDB username was simply "Contact"

Report this thread post

We're implementing a new atlas here soon (after we work out some bugs and launch our profiles) which will allow you much easier navigation to see the chunk levels, as well as what spawns where.

Report this thread post

Is it going to be something like vgplayers.com setup or something totally different? Also, will we have the option to not have our profiles displayed if we so choose?

Report this thread post

Right now there will be no option to not show profiles, but it will be available soon.

Any reason why my Curse Icon shows a Yellow triangle in the system tray?

Usually there's a green dot, but all day today there's been a yellow triangle there. I've tried closing the program, even rebooting.

Report this thread post

Ya the yellow triangle means error. The site was having issues today, its resolved now :)

Great! Already installed on my PC and suggest to all my friends and guild. Still would be nice, if quest items and quest mobs coordinates were gathering too.

They are being gathered.
