Flaky Operation of Curse Client

Hello,

I've been experiencing a lot of inconsistent flaky behavior by the Curse Client/webpage. It gives me zero error messages in most cases so I don't have a lot to go on. Also, I use three different computers and I've experienced these problems on all three machines, so I don't think it is my setup.

Two problems I've been having for at least a month:
(1) I have addons that are out of date. A newer version is listed on Curse. I click "Install using Curse client" on the webpage and NOTHING happens. No new webpages. No error messages. No little client download bars in the lower right corner. Nothing. I've reloaded the client multiple times, rebooted, etc. No luck. Sometimes I don't have this problem, sometimes I do.

(2) I love the idea of the Curse clients ability to "check for latest addons" upon my command. If only it worked! Sometimes it does. But usually, it flashes a quick progress bar but doesn't find any addons to update evem though I know there are some. Occassionally it works great, bringing up a list of addons that are outdated so I can update them.

Whats up?

Thanks,
Dan

Add me to the list of those concerned about the recent inability to use curse.com

Report this thread post

Curse.com has been VERY slow lately. And its not just my computer. The load times are pretty bad.

My curse client is set to automatically check for updates. it gives me a news pop up just like when there is a new story to read.

The only thing i notice that doesnt work is that it wont update the add on. i find that i must uninstall the current addon using curse client then from the curse website install the updated version.

I agree, the Curse Client isn't quite up to par just yet, but I haven't really had any of the problems you are mentioning. I can install and update addons just fine so I'm not sure what is going with how you have it configured. In defense of the Client though, I think it is still in its beta stages so just keep holding out for fixes to these problems.

You might be interested in trying out the new curse client. Its not fully supported/released yet, but there is a current beta version. Its missing alot of features but the addon managment system works 100%. Please be aware that this is a beta and may have problems, and can potentially screw up your addons directory so PLEASE back it up before trying it.

If you do end up using it and finding issues, please post a ticket/bug report. I've fixed many issues the hour they are reported, and the beta will auto update to the latest release available.

Glad to see curse.com back online, but unfortunately the website never stops loading. This makes it impossible to read anything other than headlines. Whenever I scroll down to read more, the page resets and I am back at top of page. Let me know if things improve, because looks like I am forced to use a different source for imformation. And though, I understand charging for the use of the client, I am unwilling to pay for the service. I guess that makes me one of the few expected to terminate all connection to curse, because if I cannot read the website and have to pay for the client, there is absolutely no need in collecting data via the profiler.

@vagrantmindusa

You figured them out :) The Curse client really is a sneaky program. Not sneaky bad, but sneaky it benefits Curse way more than it benefits most average users. As long as you can accept that it's an ok program to use.

It just benefits Curse more than it benefits the average user. Giving it away makes up for all the issues that it has but if they start charging now then why bother using it at all. Especially when there are other alternative one-click installers out there that are much more stable. I'm a fan of Curse just not the Curse client incase you couln't tell.

See my "Thread to end all threads thread" for the answer to your question!

Please post in the proper Curse Support forums in the future with issues so we can track them easier.

In regards to the client, we are not going to charge you to use it, and its functionality is similar to other free updaters in its normal mode.  Premium enables something most updaters don't offer, though.

And considering using the client removes potential website visits (you don't have to go to the website anymore, really, if all you want is Addons), I don't really understand how it benefits us more than the user.  That's your opinion though, and you're free to have it.

vagrantmindusa,

What operating system and browser do you use?  This is the first I've heard of the issue you're reporting, so we need that information to troubleshoot it.

Please correct me if I have this wrong.  I understand that the new curse client will require me to select each mod that I want to update.  If this is the  case then I take exception to "similar to other free updaters".  I suppose that phrase could be lawyered into "but it does the download / install / update for you"  just like the other free updaters.

The other "similar" part, and the one I have the most trouble with, is the uploading.  If you want to mine the armory for my characters, knock yourself out.  Uploading ANYTHING from my system is a no-no.  I realize that probably puts me squarely into the "lunatic fringe" category, but you'll just have to get that marketing data some other way.  "It's not for marketing purposes," you say.  To which I reply, "Sure it's not.  You are now a commercial entity. You are now building the capability for targeted marketing, even if you have no plans to do it outside of aggregation."

No thank you.  Back to vanilla wow, I guess.

No need for a vanilla WoW, just do it like the rest of the world, download and install manually (3 to 4 clicks).

I am still not really sure how this curse client is supposed to work, as i just started using it yesterday..

I did a update of all the addons manually, and it seemed to work. (Some problem with x-perl putting everything into one folder, and then having to manually move all the subfolders out into the addon folder tho)

Anyway.. When i click the "Check for updates" button on the client, nothing happens. Am i supposed to be told what addons that i should update? cos manually "Update addon" will download it and install it fully.. wich id hate to do for all my addons every day tbh.

You're correct.  There's currently no message about what's going on anywhere when clicking this button, and it definitely should tell you at least something.

Since the premium preview is currently active, your updates are installed automatically unless you choose to disable it in the options.  If your addons aren't set to auto update, there's a graphical notification next to each addon that has an update available.  They're also temporarily moved to the top of the list to separate those with updates available from those that do not have them available.

Make sure you are logged in as administrator for windows. Right click on your curse client desktop icon and select "Run as Administrator"
