Hello everyone !
I was wondering wheter or not I should abandon Mining for Herbalism to make money?
At the moment I'm a Mining (375) / Engineer (360), abandoning Mining would be a sort of pain in the ass at first but I could still buy the ore with the money I would make by selling plants.
But I looked at the prices at the AH and it doesn't seem like plants are a so huge money maker anymore :(.
What would be your advices (miners et and herbos) ?

Hello !
I had the same craft (mining/engi) i just removed engi for herba since i had no longer use of Engineering (used to make iron grenade and all but you can't use them anymore, they completly fucked engineering, useless to have it now...).
Well so, why you keep engi, what are you making with this craft? is it usefull to you?

Frankly I would agree to ditch the enginneering. I went with Mining and skinning. One where you can track it and the other where you just kill things. Bewarned though skinning (atleast on my server (bleeding hallow- horde)) does not really pay off big time untill much higher in the skills range. Mining is required by the proffessions and there for usually (again atleast on my server) provides healthy competition for the mats and can drive the prices up or down depending on how you play the market.

Well I will never ditch the engi since it was so long to keep high lvl in it, and expensive. Plus, even if it's kind of useless there are some gadgets I like and I believe they'll nice engineering content later in the game. Plus as a rogue I really need the catseyes googles and Hyper Vision Googles ;).
The two possibilities are: ditch mining for herbalism, but with herbalism get me more money, or keep mining and brake ore to hopefully find bleue stones or green and then sell that (with the help of a jewelcrafter of course)

Of course herbalism would be nice to get potions made by alchimists of my guilde for 10-25 raids too.

Honestly, it's a toss-up right now. Jewelcrafting really gave Mining a shot in the arm when it comes to re-usability. Every time someone upgrades to an item, if it has sockets in it, they need new gems for that item. Now, sure, you can get those gems from killing NPC's, and sometimes out of chests and actually mining the nodes, but the best source that I've found through experience in Beta and since TBC was released, is through the Jewelcrafting skill Prospecting. I personally spend 100-200G a day on ores(sometimes more depending on how quickly I can move Rare Cut gems), so it's a very good source of income for a miner right now, and probably a good ways into the future.
That said, consumables are in high demand right now as well, especially for Heroics and raid encounters(Gruul, Magtheridon, and Hydross the Unstable(to a lesser extent) come to mind), so Herbalism is a very profitable gathering profession. On top of that you can get some neat consumables from picking herb nodes, like Nightmare Seed, Fel Blossom, as well as a beneficial buff from Dreaming Glory(20HP/5 sec), and instant mana(essentially a mana potion) from Mana Thistle.
In the end it's really up to you; I wouldn't give up on Engineering just yet - give it until the 2.1.0 information comes out and we see what they do with the pass they're giving it to see how they can enhance it, first. As for a second profession, it really depends on your personal choice; I would lean toward Mining if you're going to stick with Engineering.

I would have to say drop the engineering also. Pick up herbs. Most people do not farm the old herbs and I am making a killing off of them.
Having said that, I am an engineer and I am sticking with it. I figure one day they will have to fix it. I will just keep making bullets and selling them :)

think of it... what class are you? in enginneeing theres lots of ways you can earn money...but also domination in battles.. we got bombs and mines(usefull for meele attackers to slow the opponent) we got parachute cloak and this belt that absorbs 500 dmg(reduces fall dmg and with cloak it does completely) and not to speak of my last trumph card i use in battles before i die(I'm warrior)...Gnomish Death Ray + last stand. I kill my prey and die so too.
Think of it...maybe engineering ain't for making money..but to make pwnage in pvp and battles and such. I mean that every proffesion is for it's own purpuse.

what you should not do is have mining AND herbalism. this is because they both use the minimap as there locater, and since you can only have one going at one point, you wont be able to find both herbs and ores. seeing as you dont want to give up engineering, i would suggest just sticking with mining and mine things that the people want alot of. figure out what the biggest area of lvls is in your server. if its in the 40s, mine lots of mithril, 30s iron, and so on and so forth. be sure to sell the ores though, as it will open up the possibilities of more profs purchasing the ores.
just my two cents
